For a very long time now, whites have been accepted and able to do things that people of color are not. Although black women in the media may portray their sexuality in the same or common manners as white women, they are still scrutinized and are not easily accepted in the media when it comes to displaying their sexuality. For example, celebrity Vanessa Williams is a perfect example of how women of color are often degraded and face hardships that non-colored women do not. Vanessa Williams was the first black woman to be crowned Miss America. However she did not have her crown long before she was forced to hand it over. Nude photos of Vanessa had surfaced which led to losing her crown as well as about two million dollars in contracts. Vanessa

Lorna Simpson does not care that people are offended by her artwork because it is not intended for them, she makes it clear that if you are taking umbrage to her work than it is simply not intended for you. (Lorna Simpson) Lorna Simpson’s message to little black girls is beyond powerful because representation is very important, Lorna has a young daughter and she said that she never wants her daughter to feel like she is not important. We live in a society that sees black kids as both less innocent and older than white children, not so much with little girls but also with young black males. A study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that “black boys can be seen as responsible for their actions at an age when white boys still benefit from the assumption that children are essentially innocent. The U.S. Department of Education revealed in a report that black children face discrimination as early as preschool.” (Naadeyah Haseeb 1) black kids need people to look up to for how to live and feel confident just as adults do and that is why Lorna Simpson does not care about people criticizing her work and not appreciating it because she is appealing to an audience that needs her work as
What is it like to live a life with Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD)? Narcissism is a pervasive pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration, and lack of empathy. People with this disorder can be vindictive, selfish, cunning person. They do not care who is harmed or hurt. Abigail was the leader of all of the girls that were seen dancing and calling on evil spirits. Abigail would threaten the girls by saying if they said anything, she would kill or harm them severely. She wanted what she couldn’t have, so that made her psychologically unstable. Abigail William’s would be convicted in today’s court because she gave many threats to kill the girls who were with her the night they were dancing if they spoke up in court, her behavior caused harm to many even though she may not have physically done damage herself and due to previous court cases, some people diagnosed with Narcissism were found innocent due to their mental instability but others were guilty because they were mentally unstable. As it is shown, Narcissistic Personality Disorder causes her to be selfish, arrogant, dangerous, and obsess over the man she could not have, because Abigail threatened the girls she was with the night they were dancing, to not confess to anything in court.

In this poem Wiley included various kinds social events that have occurred in the past years and just to name two: Raven Symone on blackness and Miley Cyrus and Nicki Manji at the VMAs. White feminism continues to become more problematic as the media continues to allow it to be because whiteness makes money; however, intersectionality about race, public imagery, and actual feminism also continues to go viral as the diversity of American become more and more productive.

Society has always been in the mindset of a white cis male, racist and sexist. In the article “The Globalization of Eating Disorders”, by Susan Bordo, talks about how the media portrays women in an impossible light and how women of color are overlook in eating disorders. The article “Saving the Life That Is Your Own: The Importance of Models in the Artist’s Life” by Alice Walker, talks about how women of color are overlook and not taken seriously in literature and how people need good models in life to do and become great things. Lena Horne was an African American entertainer and civil rights activist, born in Brooklyn, New York. She, like many other African Americans in general, and African American women in particular, born in 1910’s, saw many evolutions of race and racialized gender relations in America. She was able to transition to glory at the ripe age of 92 years old, passing away from congestive heart failure in 2010. Lena Horne’s height of her career, while predating Womanism being named but not actualized, embodies the four tenets that are, radical subjectivity, critical engagement, redemptive self-love and traditional communalism, by way of her commitments to hope in perilous times. The United States is made up of many different types of people. There is a broad variety of people, that have come to the United States, from all different places around the world. In order for these people to get a better life, these people have to risk their lives to come to the United States. When they do come, they bring things with them, such as: culture, religious beliefs, customs, and their belongings that they can bring. Most of these people have to leave behind almost everything they have. Some of these people chose to come to the United States and they sacrificed everything they had to make it possible. (Asis) There are many different reasons and factors that make these people emigrate away from their country. Vanessa Hudgens is an example of someone who had ancestors who came from a different country for a better life. Vanessa's mother came to the United States from the Philippines. Even though the Hudgens family is in America now,
In the African American community, we take pride in seeing our fellow people make it, as the famous saying goes “If one makes it we all make it”(Anonymous). In her acceptance speech at the 2015 Emmy Awards, Viola Davis speaks about the overwhelming dilemma of a low percentage of women of color winning top awards in Hollywood. Her powerful speech shines a light on the subject of African American women not progressing, because of the lack of opportunities. In response to her speech a fellow white actress Nancy Grahn degrades Davis by saying “Brilliant as she is, She has never been discriminated against”. This one comment got me thinking about the power to speak and who exactly has it.
Beauty pageant history, such as Miss America, testify the American ignorance of other races in our county. Racial segregation in the Miss America competition can be seen as early as 1945 when Bess Myerson was crowned. Being a Jewish Russian, Myerson’s ethnicity resulted in hurtful backlash the year she won the pageant. Many insisted for Myerson to transpose her name to one that by no means sounds Jewish. Myerson adamantly refused to do so, which resulted in more negative comments regarding her win. It was not until 1984 when America had a chance to resent their own pageantry winners again. Vanessa Williams was crowned as the first African American Miss America. Not surprisingly, America’s views still did not advance four decades later and Williams experienced controversy with death threats and hate mail. Now, into the 21st century, Nina Davuluri of Indian descent, otherwise known as Miss America 2014, is not treated any differently.
3. Racism, sexism and negative stereotypes come at a cost for African American women. They suffer psychological and physical damage from the oppression that they face.
