A soliloquy is a speech in a play that is meant to be heard by the audience but not the other characters on the stage. In the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare, the use of soliloquies allows the audience to know what the characters are feeling and what their pure motives are. They are also able to hear the characters’ thoughts directly. The character’s secrets are revealed only to the audience which gives way for irony to take a part in the play. Shakespeare uses soliloquies throughout the play enhance the story by making the personal thoughts and feelings of characters open to the audience, creating irony, and setting a course of action.
Hamlet has a number of soliloquies that express his thoughts and feelings throughout the play, for example, Hamlet’s feelings towards his mother’s new marriage. “Within a month, / ere yet the salt of most unrighteous tears / Had left the flushing in her galléd eyes, / She married. O, most wicked speed, to post / With such dexterity to incestuous sheets! / …But break, my heart, for I must hold my tongue” (I.ii.159-164). Hamlet is very disappointed in his mother’s actions, for marrying so soon after the Old King’s death to his brother Claudius, and Hamlet is currently not able to express those feelings to her. In Hamlet’s to be or not to be soliloquy, his thoughts about life and death are brought to light. “To grunt and sweat under a weary life, / But that the dread of something after death, / The undiscovered country from whose bourn / …And makes us rather bear those ills we have / Than fly to others that we know not of” (II.i.85-90)? Soliloquies have an important role in the play. The audience is allowed to know the thoughts and feelings of the characters, and their method of operation. It allows dramatic irony to be used effectively, and create tension between characters. Hamlet’s Soliloquies have caused the audience to sympathize with him due to their deeper understandings of his emotions and the sequence of events in his life. Without the soliloquies it would be unclear as to what the motives of a character’s actions are, or how they plan on carrying out those actions. Shakespeare is able to develop the characters through their soliloquies and the audience is able to see how those characters have changed over time.

In the soliloquy, Shakespeare accentuates the shared characteristics between Hamlet and a submissive servant. Hamlet submits to his cowardice and falls victim to his tendency to reflect on his profound thoughts instead of acting upon them. Additionally, he accuses himself as a troublesome scoundrel. He views himself as a criminal although he had not done anything indictable yet. This metaphor introduces Hamlet’s perception in his current emotional state to the audience.
The soliloquy that appears in Act 3 Scene 1 of Shakespeare’s Hamlet is easily one of the most popular speeches in English literature. In William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” there are four major soliloquies that reflect the character of Hamlet.
The soliloquy is a literary device that is employed to unconsciously reveal an actor's thoughts to the audience. In William Shakespeare's, Hamlet, Hamlet's soliloquy in Act II, ii, (576-634) depicts his arrival at a state of vengeful behaviour through an internal process. Hamlet moves through states of depression and procrastination as he is caught up in the aftermath of the murder of his father and the marriage of his mother to his uncle. The soliloquy serves to effectively illustrate the inner nature of Hamlet's character and develop the theme of revenge.
The interpretation of Hamlet’s, To Be or Not to Be soliloquy, from the Shakespearean classic of the same name, is an important part of the way that the audience understands an interpretation of the play. Although the words are the same, the scene is presented by the actors who portray Hamlet can vary between versions of the play. These differences no matter how seemingly miniscule affect the way in which someone watching the play connects with the title character.
Hamlet gives us seven soliloquies, all centered on the most important existential themes: the emptiness of existence, suicide, death, suffering, action, a fear of death which puts off the most momentous decisions, the fear of the beyond, the degradation of the flesh, the triumph of vice over virtue, the pride and hypocrisy of human beings, and the difficulty of acting under the weight of a thought 'which makes cowards of us all'. He offers us also, in the last act, some remarks made in conversation with Horatio in the cemetery which it is suitable to place in the same context as the soliloquies because the themes of life and death in general and his attitude when confronted by his own death have been with him constantly. Four of his seven soliloquies deserve our special attention: 'O that this too sullied flesh would melt', 'O what a rogue and peasant slave am I!', 'To be, or not to be, that is the question', and 'How all occasions do inform against me'.
The way that Shakespeare portrayed Hamlet’s soliloquy touches on a global issue of suicide. While Hamlet considers his suicidal thoughts it reveals inklings about his character. Hamlet’s soliloquy advances the tone of the play because of how melancholy and sad Shakespeare portrays it to be.

William Shakespeare is a famous English playwright. His play Hamlet centers around Hamlet's decision on how to seek revenge for his father’s death. However, Hamlet is unsure of what course of action he wants to take to exact his revenge. He discusses the idea of suicide as a possible option in his “To be or not to be” soliloquy. In this soliloquy, Shakespeare uses metaphors, rhetorical questions, and repetition to express Hamlet’s indecision regarding what he should do.
Each of the characteristics of Hamlet’s sixth soliloquy reflected the principle elements of Hamlet and because of that my understanding of the play improved. I was pushed to read more closely into the play and in doing so found many similarities between this particular speech and the thoughts and actions of Hamlet. My understanding of Shakespeare’s individual craft was also improved. Many characteristics of his writings shone through in Hamlet, particularly his creativity and questioning philosophies, his use of the procrastinating lead character, and his interesting use of irony. The basic principles of Hamlet were also revealed in the sixth soliloquy. The nature of revenge in a corrupt world and my understanding of these were improved through closer examination of the play.

Hamlet’s psychological influence demonstrates his dread of both death and life. He contemplates suicide by saying that dying is really only sleeping which ends heartaches and shocks that life gives, “And by a sleep to say we end the heartache and the thousand natural shocks” (III, i, 63-64). The soliloquy also showed the audience his thoughts concerning his father’s death and mother’s remarriage to Claudius.
