UNIVERS
Univers is a grotesque, san serif type family, started by Adrian Frutiger in 1954. The acclaimed, French type foundry, Deberny & Peignot released Frutiger’s finished font in 1957. Univers had a profound impact on the landscape of topography and graphic design. It is a good example of excellent Swiss design and emulates neutrality and refreshing charm. Univers was initially, purposely based off and preceded a late 19th century san serif type called Akzidenz Grotesk.
Akzidenz Grotesk was first revealed by German foundry, Berthold AG in 1898. Succeeding the 1920’s, Akzidenz Grotesk was typically utilized by the Swiss style professionals. Because it had a less curvy geometric structure, it was considerably easier to read, and it also

Typographers tended to use the same terms that usually did not equate to the same meaning from use to use. So, his new linear typeface Univers was the first to be produced with its own numbering system. Frutiger completed a systematic family of twenty-one san serif fonts. It included a visually structured, color-coded diagram that showed different widths on the horizontal axis and number weights on the vertical axis. The regular weight, with the correct black-and-white relationship, for book settings, is Univers 55. The font family encompasses light/extra condensed, which is Univers 39 through extended/extra bold, which is Univers 83. The fonts to the right of Univers 55 are condensed, to the left are extended, above are lighter weighted and below are heavier weighted. This visual, colored and numbered system eliminated ambiguous phrasing that created design mix-ups. With Univers’s new type family, the palette of typographic diversity was considerably broadened. His numbers altered the traditional classifications. The press standardized grammar, spelling and punctuation in works. At the time, books would be copied by monks from the original work. Not only it was very expensive and long to do so, but books would not be identical from one monk to another. Each monk had his way of spelling and using grammar, which could lead to differences in interpretation. Every monk had his own spacing between words and lines, and, often, would not be the same from page to page of the same book. With Gutenberg’s printing press, spelling and grammatical rules soon were recognized and followed. Spacing between words was now the same and lines where evenly spaced on every page. This standardization could be seen in Gutenberg’s 42-line bible. Every page except for the first 10 had 42 lines and used the same font; there were 290 master characters to complete the bible. The printing press also allowed the number of letters on every page to increase by 50%. Those new found regulations of printing allowed readers to interpret authors’ intentions more accurately and made reading a more pleasant activity. By being educated at a young age in literacy, I included it in my pottery and also working for newspaper companies strengthened my form of expression. Working in the South Carolina Republican and then later on The Edgefield Hive as a typesetter, it was a good experience helping my literacy skills but I didn’t feel fully indulged. I did it because I had to but also to learn. By understand typography, I was able to understand the science of the anatomy of type. They taught me the use of size, spacing, and placement of typography in order to show hierarchy, direction and attraction. I became to understanding that type is a collective of shapes and strokes. In this research Landor they uncovered the truth about people disliking the word “Federal” because of its association with local government and the word “Express” as being too common and overused. Landor’s idea to shortened the name by joining the two words as FedEx since some business and individual patrons already shortening the name to FedEx. Many might already know, mostly graphic designers and logo makers, but FedEx’ logotype has an Easter egg, it is discreetly placed between the E and x. Lindon’s creative idea is to utilize the negative space between the “E” and “x”, to play with the figure and ground relationship, and that space is an arrow (Fig. 3). As a massive provider of consumer goods in India, Hindustan Lever Limited (HLL), is attempting to penetrate the rural markets where there is a massive opportunity for growth. After reviewing the case analysis of SAS Institute, it is clear to see that they are well organized company. SAS Institute is design with a well put together cultural background. They distribute great employee motivation amongst their company, willingly to create a happy work place for all employees. Quickly into overviewing this case analysis, I was able to see multiple times they offer great attributes to any member apart of their organization. This allows employees to come to an understanding that their job of just working means much more than clocking in and out every day. Overview Times New Roman (TNR) is a serif typeface commissioned by the newspaper The Times in 1931 and created by Victor Lardent, an artist from the advertising department of the newspaper. The typeface was supervised by Stanley Morison, who adopted an older typeface named Plantin as the basis, but ‘made revisions for legibility and economy of space’(). Morrison also intended it to be read and not seen, consequently, without doubt, his intention has been realized. In 1436 Johannes Gutenberg invented the Printing Press, which had a major impact on both the Renaissance and printing today, however there other movable type systems invented before Gutenberg’s Printing Press. There are a few inventors of printing systems before Gutenberg, the first being an inventor in China, the second being a Dutchman, and the third being inventor in Korea that developed a printing system around the 12th century. In 1041 Pi Sheng invented movable clay type in China, which is the first known printing system, however the first known printed book is thought to be Diamond Sutra, which was printed in China, in 868 CE. The movable type system invented in China never succeeded, as it was unmanageable, as the Chinese language is made up of many characters. Although Diamond Sutra is known to be the first printed book, it is thought that book printing may have occurred well before this date. Later in the 13th century paper money and playing cards, from China reached Europe, the items were block printed.
