Unemployment in the United States
Unemployment occurs when a person or someone does not have a job. This lost income and output coupled with the economic and psychological cost of unemployment on the individual and the family are the real costs of unemployment (McEachern, 2015, p.104). Unemployment is something that will continue to take effect throughout history. This essay will explain unemployment in the United States, the four sources of unemployment, and the three main causes of unemployment.
The underlying principles of why unemployment occurs remain the same. The U. S. unemployment rate stood at a 17-year low of 4.1 percent for the sixth consecutive month in March 2018, slightly above market expectations of 4 percent (United States

Frictional unemployment occurs because job seekers and employers need time to find each other (McEachern, 2015, p.110). An example of frictional unemployment is when a student graduates from college. They are unemployed until they find a job and must join the labor force. This type of unemployment is classified as voluntary unemployment because the worker makes is own choice to remain unemployed rather than picking the first job that comes alone. The second source of unemployment is seasonal. Seasonal unemployment is caused by seasonal changes in the demand for certain kinds of labor (McEachern, 2015, p.110). Examples of seasonal unemployment would be someone who operates an ice cream truck, landscaping business, or harvest corps. This is due to regular change in seasons. The third source of unemployment is structural unemployment. Structural unemployment occurs because of changes in tastes, technology, taxes, and competition reduce the demand for certain skills and increase the demand for other skills (McEachern, 2015, p.110). This type of unemployment seems to be the most common. Examples of structural unemployment is when a company replaces a worker that operate a certain machine with a robot. Technology advances is one of the main causes of structural unemployment. The last type of unemployment is cyclical unemployment. Cyclical unemployment is unemployment that fluctuations with
The basic definition of unemployment is without work. In macroeconomics, unemployment has a very precise definition and different types of unemployment. Unemployment is defined as the total number of adults (aged 16 years or older) who are willing and able to work and who are actively looking for work but have not found a job. (Miller 140).
There are three major types of unemployment which are structural, frictional, and cyclical. All three categories explain the many reasons why a person might be out of work in an economic system.
Unemployment for individuals is a relative concept. Currently, the US government defines the worker as someone who has to be actively seeking work, in order to count as unemployed; a worker who has given up searching for work, which many have done recently, they are no longer counted as unemployed. One possible reason for this is that statistically, numbers on unemployment are geared towards employers, that is because employers care only about the amount of movement within the labor market, which means they prefer unemployment levels that keep workers a bit concerned but not high enough to threaten economic activity or political stability. Workers barely connected to the workforce, are not a factor in this calculation. This is what the conventional debate over the statistical level of “full employment” is based on, and mainstream econom...
As Canadian's fertility rate fells, baby boomers retires, immigration and foreign workers becomes very important for the increase of labor demands in the Canadian's job market. The government is planning to reduce the application waiting time and therefore there will be more newcomers coming in the next fewer years. Canadian companies will then have many experienced and foreign trained applicants where they can help Canadian companies to increase their foreign trade and to build a better relationship with the other country. However, new comers have difficulties in finding employment because of their unrecognized foreign qualifications, non Canadian work experienced and the lack of support in the settlement programs where they get help to find employment.
Unemployment generates from people who do not have a job. They could be laid off, have gotten fired, or could be in between jobs. It is important to know that unemployment counts people who are able to work. It does not include people that cannot work due to disabilities, or acts along those lines. During a recession, the economy normally experiences a very high unemployment rate.
The current unemployment rate in Canada is 5.8 percent which is the lowest rate in the last 40 years. During the 1980s the highest unemployment rate in Canada was around 13 percent. Canada maintained an average of 7.8 percent unemployment rate from 1966 to 2017 and then afterwards it is continuously declining on the over-year-over basis and reached to its lowest rate of 5.8 percent in February 2018 (Agritis, 2018). The reason behind the continuous decreasing level of unemployment rate in Canada itself is rich in the mineral resources and from the past 10 years; the major jobs come up from the sector like mining, constructions and the logistics sector.
The largest cause of unemployment can be attributed to recession. The term recession refers to the backward movement of the economy for a long period. People spend only when they have to. (Nagle 2009). With people spending less there would be less money in circulation therefore, enterprises would suffer financially and people would suffer too. This is so because recession reduces the fiscal bases of enterprises, forcing these enterprises to reduce their workforce through layoffs. These enterprises lay off their workers in order to cut the costs they incur in terms of wage and salary payments.
Unemployment is a macroeconomic factor that is pertinent to an extensive economy at a regional level. Therefore it affects a large population rather than a few select individuals. Unemployment does not only have social costs, but economic costs too. The ILO, International Labour organization, defines unemployment as, ''People of working age, who are without work, but available for work and actively seeking employment.'' Therefore implying that it is a state of an individual looking for a job but not having one. Unemployment is one of the key indicators in determining the economic stability of a country; hence governments, businesses and consumers closely monitor it. There are numerous aspects that might lead to unemployment such as labour market conflicts and recessions in the economy. There are two main types of unemployment, which can be focused on, seasonal and cyclical unemployment. Seasonal unemployment occurs when a person is unemployed or their profession is not in demand during a particular season. On the contrary, cyclical unemployment occurs when there is less demand for goods and services in the market so consequently supply needs to be decreased.
The first type of unemployment is frictional unemployment. Mankiw (2008) says that frictional unemployment is “unemployment that results because it takes time for the workers to search for the jobs that best suit their tastes and skills” (p. 601). The rate of frictional unemployment will never be zero so the full employment never reached. The new entrants like fresh graduates and re-entrants like housewives will also lead to frictional unemployment. The period of frictional unemployment is determined by the unemployment insurance benefits and the speed of the information (Mouhammed, 2011). According to Arnold (2011), the major cause of frictional unemployment is imperfect information, which means that the lacking of information required in matching a job applicant immediately with a job vacancy. The Bureau of Labor Statistics uses Seasonal Adjustment to accommodate for the sharp increases and decreases due to seasonal employment and layoffs. By removing the fluctuations, the graphs are easier to analyze, “Seasonal adjustment eliminates the influence of these fluctuations and makes it easier for users to observe fundamental changes in the level of the series, particularly changes associated with general economic expansions and contractions” (Bureau of Labor Statistics). Typically, seasonal employment flows with the seasons, for example during the winter months, unemployment is higher because of industries like construction and agriculture are halted. On the contrary, at the beginning of the summer months, unemployment is lower because student enter the workforce as the return home from school.
unemployment was something that I knew very well that you hear in the news every day but the news news doesn 't go into the depth of how what and how it happens. It is broken down the total population, from non-labor force into civilian noninstitutional labor force. And I didn 't know there 's type of job terms. Unemployment rates is the number of unemployed people divided by the number of people in the labor force. According to IndexMundi (2018), the unemployment rate of whole world in year 2017 is 7.9%, which was increased 0.6% compare with year 2016.
The most common causes of unemployment are getting fired and layed off for specific reasons. People might get layed off if a company is going out of business or maybe if there are positions in the company that are no longer needed. It’s difficult to find a job right away after being fired. Companies don’t want to hire someone who has just been fired for reasons such as failure to do a sufficient job, not showing up to work, stealing, etc. It’s also hard to find a job instantly after being layed off. In some cases the economy is down and it is hard to find any work in general.
Unfortunately, there are many Americans out of work in today’s current declining economy. Unemployment can be defined as a person who is out of work involuntary, not by choice. These people are looking jobs and available to start work. Being unemployed can be disheartening and deciding what the next step is can be challenging. Underemployed can be described as being inadequately employed, such as a low-paying job that requires fewer skills than one possess. (Daly, Hobijn, and Kwok 2015) Making ends meet can be difficult for one who has been affected by this economy over the past few years. America still has a high unemployment rate since the decline of the current job market. And many Americans are struggling to establish the skills needed for employment, or the underemployed are force to lower they skill to make a profit. America’s economic status has force the underemployed and unemployed to make ends meet with the current jobs available. And last but not least some have also utilized these difficult times to venture into new discoveries to make life hassle free. So, we wonder is Americans giving up in today’s economy or do they settle for lower end job to establish a steady income to make ends.
