Unemployment is a problem, which worries the majority of economists, social workers, and common citizens. It is obvious that there are not enough working places for all citizens willing to find work and take care of their family budget. It is a consequence of a careless regulation of the economic processes in the country. Unemployment is a widespread problem, and it touches on all the layers of society including people from different occupations. In addition, the new college graduates create one of the segments of the unemployed, which struggle to find work. Companies tend to refuse to hire the graduates as long as they lack experience in the development of the business principles and their performance. It seems that companies tend to create an endless circle, which cannot give youth any chance to become professionals in terms of the contemporary business. The unemployment rate among individuals aged 20 - 24 years continues to increase on an annual basis regardless of the gender of the individuals (National Center for Education Statistics, 2015). Statistics is alarming and insists the target audience, namely the modern society, to pay attention to the problem. Companies tend to have many fears regarding the young professionals. The main reason is that the contemporary business does not believe in skills, knowledge, and professionalism of a young generation. For many years, private charities, along with local governments, have cared for the poor through a multitude of economic security programs. These programs comprised the welfare state that sought to enact policies (after the Great Depression) in order to promote economic security for all Americans.
It is currently increasing in incidence at an alarming rate. Unemployment among young people is increasing predominantly as a result of youth receiving inadequate preparation for the job market and a largely ignored discrimination against youth in the job market. In order to minimize levels of youth unemployment, the education system and current workforce practices need to be analyzed and modified. The education system should be modified so that its degrees and more in line with jobs that are actually available and offer more job experience opportunities. The workforce practices should be modified so that discrimination against youth is minimized as much as possible. This can be achieved through invoking a higher rate of jobs awarded through meritocracy and reducing the amount of informal hiring. It is only after the integration of many of these concepts that youth unemployment levels will decrease. I would agree that the welfare system is a “broken system”, but I wouldn’t necessarily say that the welfare system needs to be “wiped out” before it can be improved. The welfare system is a large system and within that large system there are parts of the system that works well and there are parts that need additions and changes made to be more effective system with assisting individuals to become self-sufficient. Additionally, the welfare system needs to undergo change to become a more efficient system.
For what has been a very, very long time, our elected representatives have sought to achieve “full employment” as a national goal….but full employment has been suspect as a possible cause of inflation, and is therefore weakened by decisions of the Federal Reserve, in an attempt to retard inflation. In terms of causes, unemployment has changed; the character, degree of severity, possible solutions of unemployment over the last ten years or so have been reduced, and has morphed in terms of just who is experiencing the unemployment and the suggestions for answering the problem.
