“Leaders bring to every group their personal qualities, values, and life experiences and their assumption and biases” (Corey, 2011, p. 15). Understanding your personal characteristic in importance to being an effective group leader, without understanding what characters you have or do not have can help or burden the group. The eight personal characteristics of group leadership include the following. Presence is the first characteristic in which understanding others emotional experiences. I often express to individual that we are all going to make mistakes; it is how we deal with them that are important in doing this it gives members confidence in making decisions. According to Corey (2011), group leaders “show courage by taking risks in the group and admitting mistakes by being vulnerable, by being willing to change members in respectful ways, by acting on intuitions and beliefs, by discussing with the group their thoughts and feelings, about the group process, and by being willing to share their power with group members” (p. 16). Being a leader gives you an influence and power over others whether directly or perceived. I have been the president of several social organizations and had lead one of these organizations in restructuring. In this capacity, I have had to have to demonstrate courage even at times I may have been unsure of myself. It is the leaders responsibility to value honesty, respect, openness, risk-taking, and assertiveness, they can foster these qualities in the members by demonstrating them in a group” (2011, p. 28). In all groups whether therapeutic or social a leader must guide and influence the members using these factors in which the leader can share their thoughts and feelings and contribute to the group. In my capacity as a president of a group, I have had to come over many obstacles that were challenging and difficult resulting in the group requiring my leadership abilities to make changes. Without my courage and straight I was able to share my power with the group members allowing us to act as a cohesive
Throughout 2016, many different people will claim they can lead America to greatness again just as they do each election year. This directs attention towards leadership, and most Americans simply trust that these potential candidates display leadership characteristics. Unfortunately, politicians don’t always exemplify leadership, and many Americans experience poor leaders daily such as dreadful bosses. Because of these commonplace experiences, leadership may not appear as a direct character trait. Adaptable communication, the ability to inspire, a clear passion, and professional attitudes all characterize a true leader.
Corey, Corey, and Corey (2010) identify courage and inventiveness as two helpful characteristics towards being an effective group leader. Courage is defined as a willingness to be vulnerable, to be honest, and to be "emotionally affected by others and to draw on your own experiences to identify with them" (Corey, et al., 2010, p. 31). I feel that courage is something I have been able to utilize while leading and developing groups in the past. I have also received feedback from patients at the end of their inpatient treatment that supports my ability to be "emotionally affected" in a positive way. I was often told that, "I could see you experiencing the feelings I was talking about." These patient's were mainly from a corrections population and considered to be anti-social. They often presented with a flat-affect and an inability to be connected to their own emotional experience. It was very difficult work and extremely emotionally taxing. I couldn't help but be emotionally
Leadership is defined as the ability to accomplish a set goal(s) due to the act of inspiring and motivating a group of your peers. Former United States president Dwight D. Eisenhower made famous a quote that stated, “Leadership consists of nothing but taking responsibility for everything that goes wrong and giving your subordinates credit for everything that goes well.” (Notable-quotes.com). One of the most important aspects of the work area is leadership. Without leadership, there will be no guidance to for teamwork and the percentage of successful goal will be slim to none. Becoming a great leader is no easy feat however. An exceptional leader must lock in on specific attributes such as intellect, moral character, and human understanding. It doesn’t seem like much, but for a majority of people it can be almost impossible. These qualities alone listed above are some of many important qualities that will allow a leader to inspire and guide a group of people towards goals successfully.
According to Hackman and Johnson’s 2013 book, Leadership: A Communication Perspective, there are five unique characteristics that when displayed by individuals correlate directly to successful leadership. These traits outlined on page 74 and 75 of their book include: possessing high cognitive ability, an outgoing personality, a high degree of motivation and social intelligence, in addition to expertise and problem solving skills. While diverse in nature, each of these traits serves a particular and critical function in enabling an individual to gain control of followers, and guide them with a purposeful goal in mind.
Leadership is a dynamic and interesting topic. There have been hundreds of studies done on the subject, and many seek to find out why some leadership styles are better than others. Other studies attempt to look into the personality traits of certain leaders to find any defining characteristics that makes them stand out among their peers. The information gathered here is from all over the world, and from multiple disciplines. In all of these studies, common themes begin to arise from the data. Coaches, managers, team leaders and experts in the field of study, all agree that these main three topics are crucial for effectively leading any group of people. Building trust, communicating effectively, and looking towards
The qualities that make a good leader are as varied as the people that fill leadership roles. Some leaders aren’t overly dynamic but somehow get the best out of people while others appear to be too carefree to take seriously. What is it then that makes leaders who they are? A personal philosophy of leadership is that distinguishing trait that every leader possesses. What those leadership characteristics and behaviors are will be explored in the following text, along with what I believe is the best route for me to follow as I work on developing my own personal philosophy of leadership.
Introduction Through identification and ongoing assessment of her leadership style and ability, this leader is able to develop and understand her own strengths and limitations in order to grow and develop into a more effective leader. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of servant leadership, contingency, and path-goal styles of leadership to gain an understanding of current leadership models, identify this author’s style of leadership, and explore why leadership is important to organizations, society, and this author. A Personal Model of Leadership Servant leadership was a term that was first used by Keifner Greenleaf (1970) in his first essay, The Servant as Leader (as cited by Crippen, C., 2005). Greenleaf based his essay on his belief that a servant leader is a servant first, and explained that it would begin with the natural urge to serve and then the leader would make a conscious choice to become a leader, in doing so he makes the choice to ensure that others needs are met first (2005 ). As a servant leader develops he should always keep aware of those who he serves and strive to ensure that they are becoming healthier, wiser, freer, have an increase in autonomy, and become more like servants themselves (2005).
A leader is a person who has the abilities to manipulate attitudes, perception and conduct of others. There particular traits that a leader should possess to be effective in serving his or her team members. An effective leader should have an honorable character which makes him or her trustworthy to lead others with integrity and honesty. A good leader should display good character and trustworthiness which make him or her be entrusted with the responsibility for others. Team members needs a person to person their can source inspiration from and a motivator towards the required course of action. Throughout the course of a Master’s counseling program, moments of doubt, and a lack of working knowledge are bound to play a major role in the confidence a future counselor will posses in effectively implementing interventions early on in the instructional phase of his or her career. Corey (2010) states that an effective group leader, is able to become aware of their own vulnerabilities, and take responsibility in their responses. To become aware of a possible vulnerable area, a counselor must first take a concise look into their personal strengths and weakness, and then decide to actively seek out assistance with working on vulnerabilities. In exploring the roles of an effective group leader, I have realized that within the group process, I most fear the roles of a group leader that pertain to direct confrontation of a client, I also fear that the improper implementation of a intervention could lead to potential harm of the client. Attending to these fears I hold regarding group member confrontation, and intervention implementation is the key to gaining further understanding into how I can become comfortable with these essential functions of a group leader. The current paper will take a closer look into my vulnerabilities, using current research to gain insight into how I can overcome fears, when facilitating a task, psycho-educational, counseling, and psychotherapy group.
When faced with roadblocks or difficult decisions as a leader, I know that I must remain confident and retain all the qualities outlined earlier as well as countless others. Only then will I be able to effectively take action and make change in my leadership role.
One of the most important components of leadership is the leader. A leader is responsible for his or her followers and the overall goal of the group or organization. Leaders are the people held accountable or everything that happens, good or bad. On the other hand, the second major component of leadership is the followers. Without followers, a leader would be worthless. Followers make up the backbone of a leader because they are the masses that get goals accomplished. A leader is just one person, but the number of followers is countless. In order to be an effective follower, there are a countless number of characteristics that allow a follower to be the best they can be. Five of these characteristics include a positive attitude, communication skills, being part of the process, being open to new ideas, and patience.
Leadership is defined as a process by which an individual influences others to obtain goals. There are three aspects that should be addressed when explaining leadership. One aspect is that leadership is a social influence process; leadership could not exist without a leader and one or more followers. Another leadership aspect is compliance; all of the leader’s directions must be complied with voluntarily. Compliance is what separates leadership from other influence-based formal authority. Finally, leadership results in the followers’ behavior, that is purposeful and goal-directed which must be in some organized setting (Leadership Theories and Studies, 2009).
“Effective leadership is not about making speeches or being liked; leadership is defined by results not attributes.”- Peter Drucker (1909). What makes a true leader? What does a leader have to contribute to the team in order to receive high productivity from the team? Are there specific characteristics that would evident to indicate what an efficient leader would project? All of these question relate to one specific term, individual attributes. In an organization, individual attributes are considered in incentive to the hiring manager. Certain contributions, like individual attributes, the hiring manager discreetly finds as a competitive edge and usually hires the applicant who possess this advantage. How does one conform the competitive edge
The most important quality that differentiates a leader from other people is the ability to think strategically. Vision is the most important aspect that drives a leader’s strategy. It is all about where you want to be. Other qualities include Decision making, problem solving, time management, self-motivation, emotional intelligence and many more. Once we know the type of leadership, it is easy to find what leadership skills we have and which we need to develop which is explained in the book “Leadership: Theory, application, skill development (5th ed.) by Lussier and Achua.” Also, Keirsey Style Sorter personality type helps to knowing our temperament type, and work on our weakness and to emerge out as a good leader.
Throughout my life I have encountered the chance to experience position of being a leader. Being part of groups in university for class presentations, being the organizing secretary of my campus fellowship, being a youth leader in my church and the church admin, also being part of a family. Leaders are charismatic, inspirational and trust worthy. I have gained some important qualities of being a good leader through these experiences. Most of the valuable leadership’s characteristics that I obtained and strengthened are: learn to become a better leader every day, how to be a team player, to be a better listener, to be an effective communicator, to have more patience, not afraid of constructive criticism, to be outspoken, and to be a problem solver. Even though I have gained a lot, I still have more things to learn to become a better leader such as being more assertive, being more disciplined, becoming a better public speaker, and learn how to be realistic and not too optimistic. You are a leader if someone else choses to follow you.
