Diabetes is a disease rapidly increasing throughout the world today, and it is often referred to as the world’s modern epidemic. Each year, more than 13,000 young people are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes making it an increasing chronic illness. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body’s own immune system destroys the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas, normally the body's immune system fights off foreign invaders like viruses or bacteria. Unfortunately an individual with type 1 diabetes immune system attacks various cells in their body and results in a complete deficiency of the insulin hormone. The rapid increase in the incidence of type 1 diabetes in genetically stable populations implies an important role for environmental factors. Individuals that suffer from type 1 diabetes have an imbalance of sugar and because enough isn’t moved into the cells the insulin isn’t produced. When sugar accumulates in blood instead of cells, the body refrains and seeks more nutrients and other body functions are in charge of providing energy for the essential systems in the body. While the exact cause of type 1 diabetes is unknown it is often said that it is caused from an autoimmune disorder. Individuals with type 1 diabetes have to be extremely careful because an infection or any other pathogens can causes the body to inadvisably attack the cells in the pancreas that make insulin. Given the knowledge from public health I didn’t know the extinct of diabetes until the discovery of my family’s history. Until then I never knew how imminent the level of diabetes could be. This has prompt me to become more aware and create more awareness about diabetes more importantly type 1. Unfortunately type 1 diabetes cannot be prevented and there is no screening for those that don’t develop symptoms. This is adversely unfortunate for young children that have to learn how to be insulin dependent at an age early as 1. In conclusion living with type 1 diabetes isn’t easy; individuals with type 1 diabetes have an increased risk of anxiety and depression. Type one diabetes, also known as insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, usually occurs in people less than thirty years of age, but it also may appear at any age. Diabetes is a very serious disease with many life threatening consequences, but if it is taken care of properly, diabetics can live a normal life.
Diabetes is a disease that affects the body’s ability to produce or respond to insulin, a hormone that allows blood glucose (blood sugar) to enter the cells of the body and be used for energy. Diabetes falls into two main categories: type 1, or juvenile diabetes, which usually occurs during childhood or adolescence, and type 2, or adult-onset diabetes, the most common form of the disease, usually occurring after age 40. Type 1 results from the body’s immune system attacking the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. The onset of juvenile diabetes is much higher in the winter than in the summer. This association has been repeatedly confirmed in diabetes research. Type 2 is characterized by “insulin resistance,” or an inability of the cells to use insulin, sometimes accompanied by a deficiency in insulin production. There is also sometimes a third type of diabetes considered. It is gestational diabetes, which occurs when the body is not able to properly use insulin during pregnancy. Type 2 diabetes encompasses nine out of 10 diabetic cases. Diabetes is the fifth-deadliest disease in the United States, and it has no cure. The total annual economic cost of diabetes in 2002 was estimated to be $132 billion, or one out of every 10 health care dollars spent in the United States. Diabetes risk factors can fall into three major categories: family history, obesity, and impaired glucose tolerance. Minority groups and elderly are at the greatest risk of developing diabetes.
In life, the two most important concerns are my diabetes and my health. Diabetes is not the most difficult or worst thing any human can face in their lifetime, but it is a daily struggle figuring out how to keep my body healthy. Even now, as a freshman in college, I still ask myself why me, why did I get diagnosed? Though people have made a negative connotation with diabetes, I believe that this disease has changed me for the better. When I was younger, I use to hide the fact that I was a diabetic. I had an irrational fear of people judging me. The looks the adults gave me was the look I feared the most. The “look” showed that I was different; all I wanted was to be accepted. Type 1 diabetes has a genetic onset that often occurs in adolescence (Porth, 2005). It is an autoimmune disease in which the insulin-producing beta cells within the liver are destroyed (Dorman, 1993). This causes a deficiency in insulin secretion, which ultimately leads to high blood glucose levels, also referred to as hyperglycemia (Guthrie & Guthrie, 2004). The mechanism for insulin deficiency leading to hyperglycemia is described in more detail in the following section and in Figure 1.

(2003), reported the epidemiological data indicates that the most common age of onset of type 1 diabetes is from 10 to 14 years of age, with the incidence of the disease increasing worldwide. Teens with diabetes expressed lower life satisfaction and health perception, with females having lower life satisfaction than their male counterparts. Furthermore, adolescents with type 1 diabetes are challenged to adapt to a lifestyle that requires self-management of dietary practices, exercise behaviors, and insulin adjustment in addition to developing autonomy and self-identity. Moreover, the rapid biological changes occurring during this time period along with learning to manage a chronic illness place adolescents at risk for poor metabolic control and life adjustment difficulties.
Type 1 diabetes, is an incurable but treatable disease which can occur at any age but is mostly found in children due to the high levels of glucose in the blood (Eckman 2011). Juvenile diabetes affects about 1 in every 400-600 children and more than 13,000 are diagnosed yearly (Couch 2008). Type 1 Diabetes means your blood glucose, or blood sugar, is too high. With Type 1 diabetes, your pancreas does not make insulin. Insulin is a hormone, which helps glucose gets into your cells to provide energy. Without insulin, too much glucose stays in your blood. Over time, high blood glucose can lead to serious problems with your heart, eyes, kidneys, nerves, gums and teeth (American Diabetes Association). Previous research has suggested proper insulin management, a balanced diet and exercise will help maintain glycemic control and lessen the chance of complications (Couch 2008).
When the blood glucose is higher than the normal levels, this is known as diabetes disease. The body turns the food we eat into glucose or sugar and use it for energy. The insulin is a hormone created by the pancreas to help the glucose get into the cells. The sugar builds up in the blood because either the body doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t well use its own insulin (CDC, 2015). In the United States diabetes is known as the seventh leading cause of death. There are different types of diabetes. However, there are two main types of diabetes and these are; Diabetes type 1 and Diabetes type 2 (CDC, 2015).
Diabetes is a chronic disorder of metabolism characterized by a partial or complete deficiency of the hormone insulin. With this, there are metabolic adjustments that occur everywhere in the body. Specific to this child is Type One Diabetes. This is characterized by demolition of the pancreatic beta cells, which produce insulin. Because of this, it leads to complete insulin deficiency. Within Type One diabetes, there are two different forms. First there is immune-mediated deficiency, which typically results from an autoimmune destruction of the beta cells. When living with a long-term health condition it can for some people present them with many new challenges. Not only does it take time for them to adapt and accept their illness but also they may feel affected not just physically, but psychologically, culturally, and sometimes even personally such as financial or relationships with family and friends. In this essay, I will examine in turn the main challenges people with diabetes face.

This cause me to ask questions, “Why me?” Why is this disease a real thing. Why am I different? As I grew older, I started to see how I was different than most children my age. I was diabetic, but that was not all, I was more of an adult than other children. I had so many responsibilities to deal with because of being diabetic. Camp Joslin which is a summer camp for children with diabetes. Honestly is was very bizarre to think that everyone there had something in common. I had never been around so many diabetics in my life. We all had to test their blood sugar and take insulin. For the week I was there, everyone was the same. It gave me a sense of being like everyone else. I got a chance that none of my friends got, to go to camp Joslin. I was thankful and happy. As I continued to grow older and went to high school, I was still different.
