A long-term health condition can also be referred to as a ‘chronic illness’ and it can be used to define recurring conditions such as asthma, arthritis, and diabetes.
When living with a long-term health condition it can for some people present them with many new challenges. Not only does it take time for them to adapt and accept their illness but also they may feel affected not just physically, but psychologically, culturally, and sometimes even personally such as financial or relationships with family and friends. In this essay, I will examine in turn the main challenges people with diabetes face.
Sometimes with diabetes, a person may feel an array of emotions when their illness has been diagnosed this can vary from being confused, and anxious about their health and future, to feeling resentment and frustration with their own bodies.
It is also common that many people who have long-term health conditions can also be susceptible to depression and stress when attempting to deal with the aspects of their illness, such as being reliant on insulin injections or having to take care about what they eat and drink. As explained in an article by W.H Polonsky. (K101, Resources 3, pg19 )
Many individuals may feel as if they have lost control of their everyday routines, or are somewhat defeated when following treatments programmes and not being able to see an improvement in health. Recently healthcare professionals recognized that if they provide patients with well-defined, straightforward information and knowledge about their illness, it could encourage people to take more of an involved role in managing their condition, such as setting achievable goals, or becoming better practiced at monitoring and managing insulin levels. Diabetes is a chronic illness that should never, under any circumstances, be taken lightly. If anyone is experiencing any of the signs or symptoms, listed above, they should follow up with their primary doctor. Knowing the signs and symptoms, the testing process, and the management of Diabetes, may help save a person’s life.
Diabetes education is a structured education and self-management (at diagnosis and regularly reviewed and reinforced) to promote awareness. Diet and lifestyle, healthy diet, weight loss if the person is overweight, smoking cessation, regular physical exercise. Maximizing glucose control while minimizing adverse effects of treatment such as hypoglycemia. Reduction of other risk factors for complications of diabetes, including the early detection and management of hypertension, drug treatment to modify lipid levels and consideration of antiplatelet therapy with aspirin. Early intervention for complications of diabetes,, including cardiovascular disease, feet problems, eye problems, kidney problems and neuropathy.
Diabetes mellitus also known simply as diabetes refers to a group of metabolic diseases which affect the body’s homeostatic mechanism used for maintaining and regulating the body’s blood sugar levels. Diabetes is a chronic condition which, in 2013 was estimated to be affecting 382 million people worldwide.[1] People suffering from diabetes are required to constantly be vigilant of their blood sugar levels to ensure it does not go below or above optimum levels. Depending on the type of diabetes and glucose level range, they may need to inject themselves with insulin or eat high sugar foods to restabilise their body. Failure to do so can lead to other long term health effects.[2]

Diabetes has recently become a focal point of health care systems around the world due to its high prevalence and the severity of secondary complications caused by the disease. Over the course of my project on diabetes, I have had the opportunity to speak with a group of diabetics to understand from a patient’s perspective how diabetes is managed in a rural community. While I found that while some patients ignored treatment and refused to make any dietary changes, the majority of the patients I interviewed were well-informed and actively managing diabetes in their everyday life.
Every action of my day, every bite of food and every amount of exercise affects my health. I have had Juvenile Diabetes for thirteen years, and now I have decided to take on the task of not only managing my own health, but other’s as well. Managing my diabetes has not always been a huge struggle for me, but with the new stress of nursing school, it is becoming a balancing act between school and my own health.
According to the Healthy People Database, in 2010 the aging population was estimated at 40 million, this number is expected rise to nearly 70 million by the year 2030 (National Center for Health Statistics, 2000). At the forefront of health concerns for this aging population will be the intervention, management and treatment of chronic diseases. This increase in both this specific population as well as the required medical care will place a significant amount of stress on an already distressed healthcare system, which in turn will affect the availability of recourses and costs. Including patients in their self care with strategic health promotion such as encouragement and education geared towards specific socioeconomic groups will be more cost effective and beneficial in the management of chronic disease. Studies indicate that patients involved in self management of disease processes often have better patient outcomes.
This cause me to ask questions, “Why me?” Why is this disease a real thing. Why am I different? As I grew older, I started to see how I was different than most children my age. I was diabetic, but that was not all, I was more of an adult than other children. I had so many responsibilities to deal with because of being diabetic. As I felt I had grew up fast, meant I thought I didn't need help because I could do anything, yet you need help to grow. As it became summer, it had been a year of having diabetes. I went to camp. Camp Joslin which is a summer camp for children with diabetes. Honestly is was very bizarre to think that everyone there had something in common. I had never been around so many diabetics in my life. We all had to test their blood sugar and take insulin. For the week I was there, everyone was the same. It gave me a sense of being like everyone else. I got a chance that none of my friends got, to go to camp Joslin. I was thankful and happy. As I continued to grow older and went to high school, I was still different. I began to realize that being different wasn’t really a curse, but it was a gift. I came to the conclusion that even when life is hard, you can always handle it.
