Some people all around the world have cars that are misused or even abused by other people. Needless to say, having cars that have dents and broken parts is just impractical. At TyHeezy and Sancheezy’s Magical Car Wash we can make everybody's dream a reality by transforming a once battered car, into a new and luxurious sedan or SUV. The point of our pitch was to appeal to people’s emotional and fun side. Obviously the commercial was meant to allow people to find humor and to be whimsical while still pitching our brilliant idea. Scenes such as the one that stars Giovanni pointing out the flaw in the SUV was put in front of the audience to generate laughter. Giovanni points to a very minor scratch on the SUV and shows a little bit of exaggeration.
When Giovanni was expressing his feelings toward the scratch, he said, “Oh my gosh!” with him proceeding to pull his hair back as if he were sincerely stressed. Other scenes such as Giovanni exiting the car wash with such gratitude towards the business allows the commercial to be playful and entertaining while still allowing us to get our point across. We also include towards the end that our car wash is worth buying since the price is only three payments of $23.23. There is a $20,000 tax that customers will also have to incorporate into the final price but there is nothing anyone can do about tax; everyone has to pay it. Although the tax is ludicrous, our appeal to logos at the end with the brand new cars is sure to sway the opinion of customers in a way that will favor TyHeezy and Sancheezy’s Magical Car Wash. Our group members all concluded that questionable authority was appropriate to our project because Josh and I spoke as if we were experts on the subject matter. Using fantastic editing skills from Isaiah, we all agreed that our commercial will be on air by November of next year. Isaiah and I took about two hours to edit the entire commercial while it only took about one hour to film. Together Giovanni, Josh, Isaiah, and myself accomplished the greatest commercial of all time.
This is an example of pathos, the commercial is trying to leave an impact in the audience by using emotions. The commercial then shows a dancer dancing in sync to the music using interesting dance moves that are quite marvelous. By watching him dance there will be different responses depending on the person, some will feel awed and curious while others may feel envy by the talent the dancer demonstrates. The music increases its intensity and the beat makes the audience feel excited. The commercial then states phrases that come off as being quite mysterious, “Machines don’t have emotions, but the rare few can inspire them” (Lexus 00:00:26). The phrase gains curiosity and enthralls people to continue watching. By using this strategy the commercial is effective in having different emotional reactions and catching a wide variety of people’s
Almost every commercial uses Pathos, an appeal to emotions, to convince the viewer that their product is the best choice for them. The use of Pathos enables the persuader to reach out to the audience in a subconscious or even unconscious level. Emotion creates a bond with the viewer and the advertiser. Liberty Mutual commercials convince us that they provide the best coverage and benefits, such as 24 hour road side assistance and easy repair estimates. In particular, their commercials stand out as as one who uses humor and fear, and then provides reassurance to coax us to chose their insurance over others.
In “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Gilman, the author utilizes repetition to showcase the growing frustration of the main character towards her husband’s ineffective treatment. Gilman repetitively asks herself “But what is one to do?” Her repetitive questioning conveys to the reader that the treatment that her husband is giving her for her illness is obviously not working. In reality, her husband is unable to figure out what she has and he only puts her in isolation to hope she gets better. This puts an emphasis on the growing frustration the main character is feeling; she knowns that the treatment is not working and she knows her situation is only getting worse. She is frustrated at this, which is evident through her questioning.
The first shot of the car is when the car is coming to a stop at the stoplight. We get a quick view of the sleek black and white exterior. The only other time that we get to see the outside of the car is after the dialogue has finished and the light at the stoplight turns from red to green, and they proceed to drive away. The colors of the written text in the commercial match the colors of the car. The colors are crisp and inverse of each other, making them jut out.
In the book Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer wrote about Christopher McCandless, a nature lover in search for independence, in a mysterious and hopeful experience. Even though Krakauer tells us McCandless was going to die from the beginning, he still gave him a chance for survival. As a reader I wanted McCandless to survive. In Into the Wild, Krakauer gave McCandless a unique perspective. He was a smart and unique person that wanted to be completely free from society. Krakauer included comments from people that said McCandless was crazy, and his death was his own mistake. However, Krakauer is able to make him seem like a brave person. The connections between other hikers and himself helped in the explanation of McCandless’s rational actions. Krakauer is able to make McCandless look like a normal person, but unique from this generation. In order for Krakauer to make Christopher McCandless not look like a crazy person, but a special person, I will analyze the persuading style that Krakauer used in Into the Wild that made us believe McCandless was a regular young adult.
Although there are many rhetorical strategies incorporated throughout Freakonomics, the most prominently used devices include alliteration, rhetorical questions, and counter arguments. Ethos, pathos, and logos are also used, but to a lesser degree. The authors, Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner, use alliteration to keep the attention of the reader. Occasionally, Freakonomics can read more like an encyclopedia than a narrative. In using alliterations, Levitt and Dubner foster a greater interest in the book by making it more comprehensible and enjoyable. For example, the authors use alliteration in a particularly slow section about parenting experts, saying that many experts’ arguments “reek with restraint” (234).
Steven Pinker opens his essay with scenes from the movie Tootsie to show his argument that people work around what they really mean when talking to others, yet we all want the full truth and also a fake truth when speaking to someone even if all we say is the fake truth when speaking to others. The scene from the movie at the beginning of the essays allows readers a chance to see humor, but also have a glimpse at what we as people do every day when we speak with someone. We all are guilty of saying one thing we want but not truly wanting it when the time comes. If Pinker would have just started his essay with the third paragraph that included his main argument, the point would not have been as clear and easy to understand as it was with the movie scene reference. The movie scene added real life relativity to the essay, and allowed readers to see what Pinker’s argument meant without having to think about a situation where his argument is
Other commercials, according to Solomon, thrive on fitting in. The Chevrolet commercials have a slogan that makes one feel to be American, one must by American. Chevrolet's slogan is 'The Heartbeat of America.'; Car commercials also have targeted markets also. For a truck commercial, they will show a truck getting all dirty and going through an obstacle. This is targeted towards men because most men find these things appealing. For a luxury car commercial the mood or the commercial is nice and pleasant, the car is on a country road (representing one driving to there country home). These cars were once targeted towards upper class people, but now they are targeted towards everyone according to Solomon. A commercial strives on the ever so enduring drive for Americans to have better things and climb up the social status ladder. Marketers know this, so they place normal, average, everyday looking people in their commercials to let middle class people know that they can have the car, too.
The Letter from Birmingham Jail was written by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in April of 1963. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of several civil rights activists who were arrested in Birmingham Alabama, after protesting against racial injustices in Alabama. Dr. King wrote this letter in response to a statement titled A Call for Unity, which was published on Good Friday by eight of his fellow clergymen from Alabama. Dr. King uses his letter to eloquently refute the article. In the letter dr. king uses many vivid logos, ethos, and pathos to get his point across. Dr. King writes things in his letter that if any other person even dared to write the people would consider them crazy.
Anticipation is prevalent throughout The Road, which is set by the narrative pace, creating a tense and suspenseful feeling and tone.
In this generation businesses use commercial to persuade different types of audiences to buy their product or to persuade them to help a certain caused. If you analyze commercial you can see how certain things play a major role in the success of a commercial. The ad I decide to analyze as an example is the commercial snickers used during the Super Bowl in 2010;”Betty White”-Snickers. This commercials starts off with guys playing a game of football with an elderly women know as Betty White. As Betty White tries to play football she is tackled to the ground. Her teammates refer to her as Mike when they come up to her to ask why she has been “playing like Betty White all day”. This helps inform the audience that Betty White is not actually playing but instead represent another teammate. As the guys keep arguing Mikes girlfriend calls her over and tells her to eat a snicker. Betty White takes the first bite and then suddenly a man appears in her place ready to finish the game. At the end of the commercial the statement "You're not you when you're hungry" is shown followed by the Snickers bar logo. What this commercial is trying to show is that hunger changes a person, and satisfying this hunger can change you back to your normal self. They use different types
Richard Louv attempts to question the modern consumer culture of the United States by juxtaposing the complexity of purchasing a modern “Mercedes SUV” with the simplicity of staring out the window of a car. Louv uses a multitude of images to remind his audience ¬¬ who are likely the same age as he is ¬¬ of their childhood experiences. Louv also uses personal anecdotes to promote the drastic differences between simple wholesome actions and the modern consumer culture. His use of rhetorical questions also helps the reader in his/her attempt to understand that, “people no longer consider the physical world worth watching.” Louv’s use of technically specific words like, “municipalities” helps him to qualify his statements. Pollan’s article provides a solid base to the conversation, defining what to do in order to eat healthy. Holding this concept of eating healthy, Joe Pinsker in “Why So Many Rich Kids Come to Enjoy the Taste of Healthier Foods” enters into the conversation and questions the connection of difference in families’ income and how healthy children eat (129-132). He argues that how much families earn largely affect how healthy children eat — income is one of the most important factors preventing people from eating healthy (129-132). In his article, Pinsker utilizes a study done by Caitlin Daniel to illustrate that level of income does affect children’s diet (130). In Daniel’s research, among 75 Boston-area parents, those rich families value children’s healthy diet more than food wasted when children refused to accept those healthier but
The movie trailer “Rio 2”, shows a great deal of pathos, ethos, and logos. These rhetorical appeals are hidden throughout the movie trailer; however, they can be recognized if paying attention to the details and montage of the video. I am attracted to this type of movies due to the positive life messages and the innocent, but funny personifications from the characters; therefore, the following rhetorical analysis will give a brief explanation of the scenes, point out the characteristics of persuasive appeals and how people can be easily persuaded by using this technique, and my own interpretation of the message presented in the trailer.
Jonathan Kozol revealed the early period’s situation of education in American schools in his article Savage Inequalities. It seems like during that period, the inequality existed everywhere and no one had the ability to change it; however, Kozol tried his best to turn around this situation and keep track of all he saw. In the article, he used rhetorical strategies effectively to describe what he saw in that situation, such as pathos, logos and ethos.
