The short story “Two Words” by Isabel Allende is a tale about a girl who went by the name of Belisa Crepusculario. She had extreme desire to be the best at selling words, since the first time she saw words in the sports section of the newspaper. This story follows the journey of a young lady named Belisa who travels her country selling words. One day she is confronted by the feared Colonel who requests her to help him write a presidential speech. This is because he no longer wants to be feared by the people of his country but rather admired. Upon the completion of her task Belisa also gives the Colonel two special words of his own. These words along with the speech soften the Colonels personality so much that he is the favourite for the election …show more content…
and eventually he is reunited with Belisa, his love. This story most likely takes place in a Spanish speaking South American country. This is known by the currency that is dealt throughout the story. It is also likely that it takes place in the last century. This is evident by many things including the choice modes of transportation, by foot, or by horse. Adversity, love, and the true power of words are the theme of “Two words”During the story Belisa is constantly overcoming the nearly insane challenges that she faces.
Belisa was born into a family so poor they did not even have any names to give to their children. She survived through floods, droughts, and hunger when her siblings did not, which left her next in line for death. But Belisa made her way across the plains and found water, and along with it a paying occupation. She discovers words and how to use them. She finally has a purpose and a name, the poetry of beauty and twilight woven together. This shows the adversity and love in the story.Despite the odds Belisa and the Colonel, although maybe unknown to them at the time, both find what they are looking for, love. The unlikely pair ends up together after a series of events beginning with the Colonel kidnapping Belisa to write his presidential speech. It is no wonder after this that they are intertwined for good. After all the Colonel is trying to be less of a forceful war hungry man, which would most likely be irresistible for most women that could use a protective companion in their life. It could also be said that each of the Colonel’s and Belisa’s loves in life brought them together. Belisa with her writing and the Colonel with his desire to give up his fighting image enveloped them before they even knew it. This shows the power of word can do to people, how fast and simple it can …show more content…
be. “Two Words” shows the true potential power of words.
When used correctly words can accomplish anything. Belisa used words to make a job for herself to be able to get by without wondering when her next meal might be. Belisa used words to transform the Colonel from the outcast and into the front runner of the presidential campaign. Through the paragraphs of words that Belisa had written for the Colonel people were swayed to like him. To go even further Belisa swayed the Colonel to love her by giving him just two simple
words. Belisa learned to read from a priest for 20 pesos and read the dictionary until she knew it cold. She went from the top of blistering cold mountains to scorching hot coasts selling her words in markets and fairs. Belisa’s words became popular fast and everyone knew who she was. People waited for her from year to year to hear her words. The main focus in this story is on the two words that she said to El Mulato that cursed him. This shows that you can’t be so quick to judge someone. The conflict in the story is man vs. man because it is generally a battle between Belisa and El Mulato and in the end Belisa won the battle by cursing El Mulato making him unable to run for president. This short story “Two Words” is written in an omniscient narrative point of view, in other words a person is telling a story about something that happened to someone else. The main character in this short story is Belisa Crepusculario. Belisa is a round character because in the beginning of the story Belisa was a poor nobody. She was born into a poor family until she decided to set out across the plains toward the sea. When she made it across she found on the ground a newspaper and decided that she wanted to sell words, which changed
The first poem that I chose was by the poet Julia Alvarez titled “Queens, 1963” this told the story of a family that has moved into in Queens, NY. The writer and narrator of this story is from the Dominican Republic. One year has passed for the family to finally settle into the neighborhood. This time an African American family has moved right across the street. The young girl notices how her neighbors have not treated this family with kindness and respect. More police have been seen patrolling through the neighborhood. When reading this poem my initial thoughts were that “Queens, 1963” describes the American people's behavior towards foreigners and their reactions. Alvarez states, “Mr. Scott, the retired plumber, and his plump Midwestern wife, considered moving back home, where white and black got along by staying where they belonged.” (Alvarez, pp 952) It will take another year and another family that will move into their neighborhood, than once the African American family settles in another family will be placed under the same scrutiny.
“I have hated the words and I have loved them, and I hope I have made them right.” (Zusak 528) Words and the power they possess is a common theme that is heavily mentioned throughout the novel The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. Throughout this book, rhetoric affects multiple characters in both positive and negative ways. There are instances in this book in which one can see how words have the ability to tear people down, educate and inform, and to inspire individuals to follow their dreams.
...er emotional vulnerability send the reader on a mystery through a variety of people, places, and even time. With a quirky personality, the young heroine`s fearlessness and curiosity, on top of her excellent benefit of age sends her on an exceptional adventure while hints of familial love buried deep down begin to surface near the novel’s end. The poet, E.E. Cummings, is a sophisticated lover who speaks devotedly of his beloved and her mysterious power over him. With a loyal and passionate heart, the ardent poet marvels at the inner mystery, concluding that the mysteries of love and nature are best left alone because if one was to know precisely why they love another, some passion would be stolen. The curiosity, impetus, imagination, and bottomless passion in both narrators reveal that there is much more to mystery, adventure, and love than what meets the eye.

When noticing a person who wears a similar clothes everyday, one may wonder what their intentions behind their attire is. In Isabel Allende’s story “Simple Marie” featured in The Stories of Eva Luna, the clothes are taken in a figurative sense just as much as in a literal function. Just as clothes are made to cover up one's physical body, clothes can be interpreted as a covering of one’s soul and true identity. Although, not very evident on the surface of the story, one can discover the intentions of Maria, by correlating the situation to her attire. The symbolism that Allende creates within the clothing of Maria illustrates a deeper sense to her vulnerability and reasoning within the situations of her life.
Miss Brill is a story about an old woman that lacks companionship and self-awareness. She lives by herself and goes through life in a repetitive manner. Each Sunday, Miss Brill ventures down to the park to watch and listen to the band play. She finds herself listening not only to the band, but also to strangers who walk together and converse before her. Her interest in the lives of those around her shows the reader that Miss Brill lacks companionship.
Words hold great power and when used correctly can influence what people believe and how they act.

...is story, Hemingway brings the readers back the war and see what it caused to human as well as shows that how the war can change a man's life forever. We think that just people who have been exposed to the war can deeply understand the unfortunates, tolls, and devastates of the war. He also shared and deeply sympathized sorrows of who took part in the war; the soldiers because they were not only put aside the combat, the war also keeps them away from community; people hated them as known they are officers and often shouted " down with officers" as they passing. We have found any blue and mournful tone in this story but we feel something bitter, a bitter sarcasm. As the war passing, the soldiers would not themselves any more, they became another ones; hunting hawks, emotionless. They lost everything that a normal man can have in the life. the war rob all they have.
The theme of this book is that the human capacity to adapt to and find happiness in the most difficult circumstances. Each character in the novel shows this in their way. For instance, their family is randomly taken from their home and forced to work but they still remain a close nit family.
