Social media has changed the way we communicate with others in addition to how we communicate with others around the world. Before the digital era, men and women wrote letters, and traveled days, even months, to communicate with one another. Twitter is a company that has contributed to the transformation of social interactions. It is an online news and social networking company that allows users to interact with one another. Hashtags are another thing that Twitter is known for that links similar words and posts to one another. People from all over the world, with access to Twitter, have the opportunity to view and communicate with this advanced network. Although it has millions of diverse users, the company itself is not a very diverse work …show more content…
Depending on who is asked, the workers many have different reactions about his or her employment for the company. A white male may feel more powerful and authoritative whereas a female, Asian or other minorities of the company may feel uneasy or mistreated in the work environment. The issue primarily has to do with ethnic diversity and the lack of culture in the workplace. As for the overall progress, there have been people of minority hired within the company to counter some of those statistics. According to Fortune, the overall percentage of women who are employed with Twitter has increased 4 percent from last year (Lev-Ram, 2017). The article also talks about how having a more diverse work environment can also lead to a large advancement in technology. These men and women with engineering and software analysis degrees are being recognized at conferences. Twitter was able to participate in some of those events in hopes to reach out to some of those qualified men and women. While the company has made progress over the past year, there is still a lot of potential headed its …show more content…
With how opinionated people can be, it is hard to support a company that does not practice equal rights. Not only that, but men and women may not want to work for the company any longer. It was previously mentioned that Twitter is accessed all around the world. For a company that communicates and reaches many different languages, one would think or hope the work environment would be similar. The question is, why doesn’t Twitter have a more diverse staff? What would be holding them back from the potential of all men and
Many face discriminations because of their race and gender. Some may not be aware of it, but it might be present when applying for a job and in their wages. People of color are more likely to either be unemployed, getting paid less, or being in a position that requires fewer skills. Many studies have proved that race can determine if an applicant will get the job or not. White males are more likely to get hired because they possess two advantages: being white and being a male. What triumphs these two traits is technology. Many big corporations have gotten rid of their human employees to replace them with machines that could do their jobs better while saving the employer more money. It 's approximated that by 2025, one-fourth of the jobs will be replaced by technology because digital utilization will be used more and more often. Employees have to deal with unfair treatment in their workplace. Not only that, but some face other difficulties outside of their jobs. Money, food, shelter, and health are at risk when having to handle their managers and obeying their rules. Sometimes managers interfere with their employee 's productivity by making them do "busy work" or undertake pointless tasks, making the employees ' working experience miserable or even the customers because some of them might be rude. The issues that need to be addressed more often are the ones that involve being replaced by technology in the workplace, sex
Twitter is an online social networking service that has grown to a global scale. In 2006, it was created for people to be able to share short blurbs of information with each other, and it has done its job quite well. However, like most technologies, there comes consequences, good and bad, that many didn’t intend, or expect, to happen. Twitter has greatly affected the world, and society as a whole, as it affects everything from the news to even how we think.
This is because the effects of the medium on a personal and social scale as the extension of us can result from a new scale that is introduced into our lives by the extension of ourselves and by any kind of new technology (McLuhan, 1964, p. 7). In this case, the medium could be twitter. Created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams, twitter has proven to be the largest source of breaking news and social networking site. Since its beginnings, twitter is the medium
To improve the gender diversity, Airbnb hired educator to educate all employee about diversity issues such as “unconscious bias” (M. Singleton, 2015). Airbnb recent report showed that 43 percent of tech and 39 percent of leadership position are fulfilled by female which had a lot of progress in gender diversity compared to other company Google and Microsoft who only have 17 percent of female in technology roles. Successfully achieving this progress, Airbnb did a lot to attract more women. For example, Airbnb worked with many organizations which support women in workplace such as Girls Who Code and sent employees to conference to inspire next generation. As a leader in the tech field, Airbnb definitely shows that through actions, companies have ways to shrink gender gaps. Beside Airbnb, Micah Singleton also mentions Intel are outliers of most companies. Intel recently announced that they would like spend 300 million to improve diversity in the future, but we still need to see the
Gender, racial, and ethnic diversity means different things to different people. Some believe that diversity is about quotas, and affirmative action. Others believe that diversity is something that will happen on its own with out intervention. Some experts who study diversity, however, believe that diversity is not something that should be left up to chance. It is important, therefore, for organizations to take action to encourage and foster diversity in the workplace (Clarke, 1995, p. 13).
Women face discrimination in the workplace. Discrimination is defined as a behavioral activity is exhibited in how people treat members of other groups and in the decisions they make about others. In chapter 3 Race and Ethnicity in the United States discusses how discrimination not only effects positions in companies it also affects pay rates. Income is drastically different when it comes to men and women and only gets worse for women who are minorities. These women have broken through the glass ceiling in their corporations. “In 1991 the Glass Ceiling Commission was formed to help women and minorities, fight their derrepresentation in the workplace”. With this article and with research that is being done women are starting to break the glass ceiling that is holding them down. Women account for only 2.2% of Fortune 500 companies CEO roles. The number is shockingly low, less than 15 companies have women CEO’s in the 500 companies we look at that best fit our country’s
Today’s modern workforce is made up of a diverse group of individuals. People of different nationality, race, creed, color, age, sex, and sexual orientation work side by side every day. This diversity has many advantages, but it also ads a level of complexity to management. The potential for discrimination is real, and needs to be managed so as not to incur lawsuits, loss of productivity, and unhealthy working conditions. Happy employees are productive employees, so it is in any organizations best interests to ensure that discrimination does not happen, but unfortunately, it does.
Merriam-Webster defines diversity as “the condition of having or being composed of differing elements; especially the inclusion of different types of people (as people of different races or cultures) in a group or organization” (Merriam-Webster, 2016). With diversity including many different elements, the concept of workplace diversity also covers a broad spectrum of topics, and continues to evolve as many companies look to expand globally. This subject has become increasingly important among managers over the last couple of decades, and has helped to reinforce other concepts such as affirmative action and equal opportunity employment. While most people believe that everyone should have the same opportunities available to them, and that we
Living in a country where it was founded by immigrants, diversity is everywhere you go especially in the workplace. There are many types of diversity; ethnicity, gender, religion and age just to name a few. Working in a diverse organization it can give you a taste of the real world, and what you will deal with wherever you go. There is so much diversity in the world today so it is a benefit to experience it in the workplace as well. You are given the chance to learn so many things from different cultures, why wouldn't you want to work in a diverse organization?
In most countries, men and women play different roles in society. Most of the time the men go to school and work while the women stay at home and cook, clean, and take care of the children. Now, in some countries women have been allowed to go to school and get jobs but there are still countries that are set in their old ways where the women stay home and are not allowed to get an education or go to work. It is usually in more underdeveloped countries where they are still in the old ways of women staying home and men doing work. In more developed countries, now women have been able to go to school and get jobs. There has been the problem though that in developed countries where women can work, that they are paid less money or there are certain positions or jobs that there are more men than women. An example of a career choice that more men then women chose to do is STEM jobs. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. In these four fields, it is more common to find men doing these types of jobs and women are a minority. It has been said that women are more likely though to get a job in one of these fields because of the fact that they are a minority. Even certain types of positions within companies are more prone to have men than women as well as careers. Cecilia L. Ridgeway, author of Framed by Gender, mentions a few of the positions that women are not usually going to have within a company. She states that, “ Women are still rare as CEOs, top corporate officers, presidents, and directors of major firms and institutions” (Ridgeway 114). It is true that these positions within large companies usually do not have women. This is a perfect example of how men are seen as superior by being the superior even just within a company. There are a lot of jobs and positions that women are not usually allowed to have. Kwame Anthony Appiah author of “Making Conversation” talks about his
One of the biggest factors positively affecting many gender-based discrimination issues within the workforce is the effects of leadership and management styles within the organization that promote gender diversity (Charbel, 2011). Many organizations found that when leadership and management roles that were used to promote diversity had visible support from upper level management within the organization, the affects on gender diversity were long lasting and very positive on many aspects of the business including increased morale, creativity, productivity and integration among employees (Charbel, 2011). As many organizations begin to focus on diversity management styles, they reap the benefits of a more productive work environment that is friendly and rewarding for the employees and the employers. Diversity management is the future of management for many organizations and rightly so as the affects on the socioeconomic standpoint of the women in these work environments increases, the business also reaps various
Social media is a revolution, which we are currently experiencing. It has changed the way people communicate and interact with one another, and opens up many more avenues to share news, information, and just general chit chat. Social media is relatively quiet young, but is here to stay for the foreseeable future. We are now at a point where online, we can share, read and react to lots of individual information being posted on microblogging websites, such as Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Tumblr and more. Twitter in particular has been widely embraced, and will centre most of the discussion.
In the article “Here’s why there hasn’t been a female Mark Zuckerberg” written by Jessica Guynn and Jon Swartz, the topic of gender inequality in the business world is discussed along with how despite the lack of women in business, the inclusion of women could bring many benefits, such as success and profit. Along with the recognition of gender inequality in the workforce, the authors also go into detail and include anecdotes from women who have experienced this bias. Some of these experiences include instances such as inappropriate comments or advances, which could cause further damage to a woman’s opportunity to advance in her career, especially in business. The authors propose that including women could ultimately lead to an overall improvement

Social media has become a major epidemic in today’s society. According to millions of people have signed up on social media websites, allowing their basic information to be shared with the world wide web. Two of the biggest social media websites today are Facebook and Twitter. The new generation tends to use Twitter over Facebook, the older generation prefer Facebook over Twitter. Though Facebook and Twitter serve the same purpose and have many similarities, they both differ in many ways.
