You win some and you lose some. Trophy givers today often tend to ignore this statement making it to where no child can be left behind. So, here's a trophy for everyone! You came just for the social aspect? Here's a trophy. You came to two practices and three games? Here's a trophy. You came to every practice, worked on your alone time, and busted your butt to earn that starting position every game? Here's the same exact trophy as everyone else. These rewards fail to teach people the lessons learned from losing and how to work for what you want while taking away the true value of winning. Athletes of all ages should not be rewarded with participation awards when giving such minimal effort and dedication to the sport and game.

Yes, that same one everyone else received when there's only few who actually earned it. This is another reason why participation trophies should not be given. Participation trophies diminish the value of winning. If you ask Betty Berdan, a high school junior who has participated in competitive sports since age 7, should would tell you the same thing she wrote on the New York Times website. Betty stated that "they [the trophies, medals, and ribbons] do not mean much to me because I know that identical awards sit in other children's rooms all over town and probably millions of other homes across the country...trophies used to be awarded only to winners but are now little more than party favors: reminders of an experience, not tokens of true achievement." By giving awards for participation, we are showing the people who actually deserve these trophies that their hard work and dedication to the sport means absolutely nothing. As someone who spends many hours and lots of money on training, lessons, and hours of practice for school and travel ball, I agree very strongly with Betty Berdan. Yes, I am always proud of my own accomplishments but if I'm getting the same trophy as someone who didn't earn it, mine is going in the trash. I will always remember what I worked for and don’t need a pointless trophy to remind me. Just like when I fail on myself, that will stick in my head just as long as when I win because I will forever learn off of that failure. This is how we should be teaching kids to think.
