The first day of school is filled with excitement and often some anxiety for young children and their families. When children move from a familiar child care environment, with established relationships and routines, a larger more structured school setting can be overwhelming even for very confident children. As mentioned in Education for All Global Monitoring Report (2006) that this transition and readiness is dependent on physical well-being and motor development, social and emotional development, approaches to learning, language development and cognition and general knowledge. The report on Rethinking the Transition to School (2008) identifies that the period of transition and having the children be “ready” for school is very testing time for the children as well as their families. All the knowledge and experience children have attained in playgroup are a result of their cognitive development and the journey to create a sense of belonging. The continuity in the children’s learning is a key ingredient and while that is considered the quality of education plays an interlinked role as well. A child’s readiness is directly dependent on the development of their skills in areas such as mathematics, literacy, arts and understanding of self.
