The focus group discussions were separately conducted with three groups of trainee nurses raise several issues concerning their competence acquisition and experience with regards to informal learning during clinical placement. Based on trainee nurses’ experience, they understood the meaning of competence as they claimed that they are competent when getting good feedback from others; when they are able to perform clinical tasks successfully; they are able to manage their work effectively and when they are able to provide health care to patients with good moral and emotional support.

Trainee nurses felt not performing well their clinical task because of no alignment of knowledge learned in class with practice due to the limited availability of clinical procedures. Besides that, several individual flaws occur which they are lack of confidence in performing clinical procedures due to poor communication and lack of knowledge on the medical terminologies (jargons). Trainee nurses also touch into account the problem regarding their attachment and constantly compared their clinical experience of each other as they are some of them are not have an opportunity to place at the different hospital. They felt dissatisfactions over non-systematic approach in allocating clinical placements. Another interesting issues highlighted by trainee nurses is the short duration of the clinical placement and several limitations and obstacles to learning effectively which regarding the large number of patients, the lack of tools, and the kind of health illness at their clinical placements.
