The focus group discussions were separately conducted with three groups of trainee nurses raise several issues concerning their competence acquisition and experience with regards to informal learning during clinical placement. Based on trainee nurses’ experience, they understood the meaning of competence as they claimed that they are competent when getting good feedback from others; when they are able to perform clinical tasks successfully; they are able to manage their work effectively and when they are able to provide health care to patients with good moral and emotional support.

Trainee nurses felt not performing well their clinical task because of no alignment of knowledge learned in class with practice due to the limited availability of clinical procedures. Besides that, several individual flaws occur which they are lack of confidence in performing clinical procedures due to poor communication and lack of knowledge on the medical terminologies (jargons). Trainee nurses also touch into account the problem regarding their attachment and constantly compared their clinical experience of each other as they are some of them are not have an opportunity to place at the different hospital. They felt dissatisfactions over non-systematic approach in allocating clinical placements. Another interesting issues highlighted by trainee nurses is the short duration of the clinical placement and several limitations and obstacles to learning effectively which regarding the large number of patients, the lack of tools, and the kind of health illness at their clinical placements. The skills acquisition concept poses a backwards movement in progress. The competent nurse in this case steps backward down the ladder to the novice level as an NP. Moreover, learning new skills, knowledge, and methods of treatment may technically be a step forward in a person’s career, but it is a step backwards in confidence and experience. Learning these skills will also prepare the student nurses in future to delegate task when they qualify and become RN’s. In relation to my nursing practice, when I become a registered nurse, I will assist student nurses in their career by delegating tasks to them that are within their level of competence as well as making sure that all tasks assigned to them are duly supervised and follow up on the delegated task. I will encourage them to seek clarification where necessay. Providing feedback and praising them for work well done is another thing I would bring into my practice. I will equally inform them through feedback of any task which did not work well and show them areas where they need to improve upon.

Once upon a time, my best friend, Bryan Martinez, often heard his mother’s medical conversations with friends. One day at school, our teacher confronted Mrs. Martinez and told her that she was able tell that Bryan was a son from a nurse. As mentioned by Hunter and Arthur (2016), one of the main reasons I could maintain and improve my practice was due to clinical placements. During clinical placements we are frequently being assessed and taught in dealing with real situations. Feelings As learning is a lifelong process, I’m sure there are many things I need to improve and learn to better myself. However, the lessons I learned during the course as a nursing student shall always remain as a bedrock for my future development.
This essay is going to reflect upon the nursing skills I developed during a period of placement simulations, placing emphasis on oral care, communication with a non-engaging patient and bed bath. It will outline the fundamental aspects of clinical nursing skills that I have begun to acquire. This will also highlight the learning processes which took place and how it helped me to enhance my knowledge, and ethical values in order to deliver quality and safety of care. Using a variety of sources from current literature, I will use a reflective model to discuss how I have achieved the necessary level of learning outcome. What is the central component of advanced practice nurses (APNs) direct clinical practice and patient/families?
Clinical placements allow student nurses to put theory into practice with real patients and actual clinical situations. Every placement will challenge student, improve communication skills, build own knowledge and foster own reflective practice. It is one of the most interesting and exciting aspects of training to be a nurse. I personally believe that, students must be responsible for their own learning opportunities and understand the outcomes they need to achieve on placement, discussing any queries with their clinical supervisor. I always look for learning opportunities. I approach my clinical supervisor for her guidance to perform any new skills fall into my scope of practice.
I believe placing student nurses in the clinical setting is vital in becoming competent nurses. Every experience the student experiences during their placement has an educative nature therefore, it is important for the students to take some time to reflect on these experiences. A specific situation that stood out to me from my clinical experience was that; I didn’t realize I had ignored the patient’s pain until I was later asked by the nurse if the patient was in any pain.
Saying that you are a registered nurse is a broad statement. Registered nursing is a job that has many aspects. Registered nurses work in many different settings and they carry out many different routines. As a registered nurse you could be exposed to many different opportunities. My goal is to be a registered nurse but, I need to learn a lot. Becoming a being a registered nurse requires a lot of hard work and effort but, if I focus on my goal I will be able to achieve it.
Regardless of the specialty, the main focus of a nurse includes assisting doctors in treating patients and providing clinical and emotional support to both patients and ancillary staff. With the role of administrative nursing supervisor comes additional responsibilities and administrative roles, such as staffing, organizing, prioritizing, and ultimately ensuring safe and quality patient care.
