Argument Essay Majority of parents, students, and teachers believe in the value of education. I believe a current issue in education is that students are now expected to learn in online classes instead of attending class with an instructor present. Research conducted on both styles of education shows that online classes are less effective than in-class instruction. Due to many students not being aware of the advantages traditional education offers and the disadvantages of online education, how students feel about after taking online class or lecture, and technology is also a main reason for this change. Students have their own perspective on how they want to be educated. In my experience I prefer in-class instruction. I have had the experience …show more content…
Some students may ask themselves what is the difference between these two types of educations? Traditional education differs from online education in many ways. One of the major differences is flexibility and communication. Traditional education has set times and when taking online classes, you have the option to choose the times. It can be difficult to find that motivation to complete tasks when we have other situations going on in the real world. One other disadvantage of taking online classes is that it requires patience and time. It can be time consuming when you do not understand the lecture and not have the same connection as if you were face to face with other students and …show more content…
Elaine Allen and Jeff Seaman prove by saying that "nearly 10 percent increase over the number reported the previous year" (Online nation: Five years of growth in online learning, page 1). Traditional education has shown to be more structured and easier to control. An instructor helps set goals and create the motivation a student needs to complete a task. Although the student number has increased of online education it has not yet proven that it is more effective than traditional education. Traditional education has many advantages. One of them will be responsibility. It requires for responsibility to show up to class and to complete task that are assigned whereas when taking online classes everything is done at your own pace. Another advantage of traditional education is that missing information can be gained much easier. It is more effective to gather doubts and responses to questions, when having the ability to be face to face with the instructor is
However, when a student takes an online class the student and professor are at a disadvantage of building an interpersonal relationship. For example, a professor is unable to read the nonverbal cues of a struggling student through a computer screen or is unable to tell if a student is experiencing a true emergency. Just as, a student is unable to read their professors nonverbal cues that a particular chapter or assignment is vital to passing the course. I have taken classes on campus and online classes for three semesters now and have learned that regardless of class format a student needs to be dedicated, structured, self-motivated and not afraid to ask questions. A disadvantage of taking an online class is if a web portal is not working properly.
The face of education is changing. Technology is being introduced to provide more opportunities to more people. Gee et Al states that “the argument here is that the world has changed and the nature of learning and knowledge is changing along with it” (Gee et Al, 5). Traditional schooling is becoming less popular and having schooling online is in demand. Due to this change, students are relying on access to technology. Online learning and traditional learning have been compared in research resulting in evidence providing that distance education can have the same effectiveness as traditional learning, providing that the equipment is used accurately for the course and there is still student interaction with their classmates and their professor, and they are using their learning strategies. This paper will discuss education, economy, gender, age, and ethnicity. So, how do these aspects of online colleges support fast capitalism?
There are many advantages to online learning, it affects the way people can learn. According to “Effects of Technology on Classrooms and Students”, “students have a greater willingness to write or work on computational skills”. “They say student like the immediate results of having online learning.” Another advantage is that students can learn at their own pace. With learning at their own pace they will be able to actually know the information well. If, they are in a regular classroom setting they may no...
School has been in our lives for the longest time and it has always been a positive experience. It sets students on a path to achieve their education goal and stepping stones to a career! Now with all the advancements in life, students have the opportunity to do online classes. This is useful if the pupil is not able to attend school or their school does not offer some classes that they would like to take. Experiencing both of these ways of schooling, I have an understanding of the differences between the two. The major differences between online school and traditional school are the flexibility opportunities, the communication with the teachers, and the time management/discipline from the learner.
Online Learning Students that study online learn by themselves in their own way. They have to complete the assignments and research on their own, forcing them to learn online. Learning may not be as satisfying as face-to-face learning but it has many pros than disadvantages. Online learning is better because you can have a better environment, it is also flexible, and the cost is less. One point in favor is that online education can offer us a good habitat to remain studying and upgrade our study.
There are many differences in taking an online class and a traditional class, time, communication, teacher student ratio time and the teaching methods. Both courses still have some similarities between them and what they require the student to do. Both classes have its pros and cons on deciding what to take. Most people still prefer to take the traditional classes because the traditional classes offer a lot more than online classes. Even though online can be more convenient for some student it might not fit their needs, not having a teacher in front of them teaching can be very hard for them to learn.
In the article, In Defense of the Traditional Classroom: An Argument Against the Move to Online Classes, written by Nicole Smith, she explores the benefits of traditional classroom learning verses online learning, focusing on the disadvantages of online learning. The argument Smith presents is a strong inductive argument as she provides the disadvantages to online learning. Through Smiths research the disadvantages of online learning outweigh traditional learning to such an extent that online learning would not be beneficial to both the students and the teachers. Issue: How the elimination of traditional K-12 classroom for online classes could be a mistake for both students and teachers.
Some of these may be the right choice for certain students. One problem I see with this is that when the student has a question or does not understand something, they would have to research it instead of having a person to person interaction with the teacher. Also, the teacher may sometimes offer examples that come from personal experiences. Computers cannot take the place of a human being. A student must have interactions with other students in order to learn how to communicate properly outside of school.
Finally, you have to think and make decision on whether you want to do online or traditional education. There are several aspects between traditional education and online education that are similar but there are also aspects that are different. One of the many that are alike is the requirement for books and papers; however, the two factors not alike are the cost and equality between all students. Some may feel that traditional education is better because you have person to person communication with the instructor. When you are balancing a lot of things you sometimes tend to fall asleep during class. You have to look at your life and your daily responsibilities when you determining which educational setting is best for you. There are a lot of factors you have to look at when you trying find the type of education that fits your lifestyle
Technology has had a large impact on the field of education. The proliferation of multimedia resources and limitless amounts of information available through the Internet has fundamentally affected the learning process. Students no longer search through cards and stacks for magazine articles; almost everything is at the click of a finger. Multimedia resources are increasingly utilized in the classroom to help instruct students. Some professors are making conscious efforts to use new technology, so as to introduce and familiarize their students with it. The significance of technology in education is now being elevated to a new plateau. Education through the Internet, the great equalizer, may make it more widely distributed through the phenomenon of online courses. It is the thesis of this paper that online courses are not an effective means to educate traditional undergraduate college aged students (people from 18-22 years old).
Online education is a booming trend in the education world. It is something different than the traditional classroom. It is allowing student around the world the opportunity to get an education. Online education allows student to have a more proficient and cheaper way of learning. Having multiple ways to give a student an education allows all learning types to find their own way of learning. Education changes lives but it can be difficult for students to get to a classroom to sit through an hour class 4 times a week, this can be for many different reasons. There are many doubts about online education, but this a new world without borders it is a new opportunity for people from all over the world to get an education.
...m based school with some online classes, I made a decision to continue my studies online. The teachers design and interaction meets my level of understanding and when I’m not sure of an assignment, I simply contact them via e-mail. I feel the author did a great job in addressing his chosen topic-showing both the strengths and the weaknesses of his study. His final suggestion to teachers is to, “fully reconsider their students’ specific needs and redesign their online courses and learning activities to involve their students…help them benefit from the online learning environment.”
Over the years it has been seen that education has taken up several forms. With the advent of technology, education has also been integrated with technology. Previously it was seen that education was achieved through written forms of paper with pen or pencil. The use of pen and pencil can be dated back to the Roman Empire. However, with the developing pace the traditional means of attaining education are changing. The introduction of information technology has brought forth a new way of learning through the internet. E-learning is the new form of education introduced by IT which helps people to attain knowledge through the use of their computers. A portal is introduced by the use of information technology which the students are able to access and to take tests. However, this new technology also brings with it other ethical issues of plagiarism and social contact. Online education is an inadequate alternative for traditional, classroom-based teaching for several reasons: there is no interactive communication between the student and the instructor, potential employers do not value online course work, class offerings are limited, instructor feedback to the student might be delayed for days, and group projects are nonexistent.
In a study that measured online students’ ability to achieve the same efficiency of course material as face-to-face students, at least 98% of students reported that they had, so one may be led to believe that online learning is just as efficient as face-to-face courses (Liebowitz, 2003).
Those who disagree with me think that online learning allows a student to learn at their own pace. Students are able to take the time to understand and figure out problems with the resources that are provided. The convenience of learning in an environment that is conducive to that particular students learning is provided by the student. If the student feels comfortable they are more apt
