Total quality management has become a necessity in today's society amongst businesses and consumers. Organization and consumers believe that quality is very important, and it will make or break an organization. Ensuring quality in products helps eliminate liability that would come from defective products, and it increases the rate of the returning consumer. Companies are liable if there products were made poorly, and if they cause a disaster from the use of their products. Total Quality Management is a holistic business management methodology that aligns the activities of all employees in an organization with the common focus of customer satisfaction to be achieved through continuous improvement in the quality of all activities processes, goods and services (1998).
According to Wikipedia, it defines total quality management as:
A management strategy aimed at embedding awareness or quality in all organizational processes. TQM has been widely used in manufacturing, education, government and service industries, as well as NASA space and science programs. Total Quality provides an umbrella under which everyone in the organization can strive and create customer satisfaction. TQM is a company’s complete “culture of quality” approach which focuses on long-term success. It strives for continuous improvement, in all aspects of an organization, as a process and not as a short-term goal. TQM’s involves everyone in the organization to transform the organization into a forward-thinking entity by influencing attitudes, practices, structures, and systems of the entire organization (Business Dictionary, 2014). According to Strickland (1989), TQM goal is to improve the processes within an organization by emphasizing organization wide continuous quality improvement. It focuses on customer’s need and customer satisfaction. TQM proclaims the values of teamwork, employee empowerment and participative decision-making throughout the organization. Customer satisfaction is the desired outcome that drives this approach. TQM emphasized the need for teamwork ad training to implement their activities (Strickland, 1989).
With Product Quality, the responsibilities of a business are simple. Develop a low cost, high quality product that withstands the normal limitations of it’s use. Quality can be defined as doing the right thing, the right way, the first time, and every time. It is important that this is understood from both the consumer and the business perspective. In short, the product will meet customer expectations, priced appropriately, and delivers as advertised. Within the business, producing a product the right way is the most effective, efficient, lowest cost and most valuable way to produce quality results, the first, and every time. Furthermore, product quality implies that all standards are met, with minimal repercussions of poor quality, reducing the amount of rework and waste. As such, businesses who develop products of poor quality are either failing to do the right thing, or doing the right thing, the wrong way.
