The great Buddha once said, “The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, worry about the future, but to live in the present moment wisely and earnestly” (Jonathan, How to Live in the Present). Unfortunately, humanity today doesn’t always conform to that statement. The human race generally hates chaos and disorganization in any shape or form. That being said, humans love to plan ahead and look to the past to avoid future mistakes.Typically this is fine to do, since everybody does it at some point in their life, but its when you begin to over think the events of the past or the future that it becomes a problem. When you overthink and stress about events in the past then you are unable to move on and it begins to control what you say and do everyday of your life. While overthinking the future doesn’t have such dramatic effects, it does create more stress, which is not good for both your mental and physical health. Life moves too fast to be worrying about the past or the future, so just stick to the present because you may end up regretting it later on in life. If you’re always planning ahead and making plans for what you are doing tomorrow, then you are probably doing today what you had planned yesterday, meaning that you aren’t actually living for today, but for tomorrow. Thats not living in the moment, not even remotely close.
The past is something that we all dwell on once in a while, but there are some people out there who cannot let go of the past and thus are controlled by it. Unfortunately life has many hurdles and roads unturned. I do not feel we should regret the mistakes we have made in our past. Or else, we may be too hesitant to make correct choices in our future.
There is a saying that goes “don’t live in the past” because things will always get better in the future and that you should let time work itself out. People often think of their pasts and let that dictate their future, which in many cases keeps people from achieving their full potential. People become blinded by their pasts and the good memories they’ve had which turns to them seeking the same thing to satisfy themselves because they’ve become comfortable and do not want change. They may not want change because they are scared of what is to come or because of getting hurt again like they have in previous experiences. A prime example of this is Erykah Badu’s song “Bag lady” as it explains how people should let go of their pasts and look to the future.
First, it is important to understand past experiences from the perspective of Helga Ryan, an inductor of hypnosis. One of her many articles describes how on a spiritual level, we hold the energy of our past experiences and memories in every cell we are made of. Because of this, we are constantly forced to relive these memories and be reintroduced to the energies associated with them (1). I blame, in part, a major portion of humanity’s recently-developed inability to live in the moment on the rise of technology and personal communication devices (i.e. smartphones); one cannot spend an hour surfing the internet without seeing a meme depicting disappointed-looking elder family members surrounded by younger ones enthralled by their smartphones, tablets, etc. The same visual is easily spotted on a Saturday evening out, where individuals may be not living in the moment, but rather combing their social media pages for an even better, more exciting or enticing event to attend down the street. Seizing the day is extremely harder than what people think. We as human are made with the lateral septum, which is the part of the brain that makes us worry. Worrying can causes anybody’s day to turn terribly wrong. I disagree with some when they make the notion to not let petty things bother you like; bills, lack of money, love etc. But I also can see how people can say those things. There is a basic understanding of what transpires when repression occurs; when something shocking or traumatic occurs, a person’s mind analyzes and deals with it. When the mind cannot deal with the occurrence, it pushes the memory into sub-consciousness where it cannot access it. In some instances, the repressed memory may emerge into consciousness. Many studies on the concept of repression focus on memories such as; accidents, death of loved ones, and memories of childhood cases of sexual abuse. Many of the subjects unearth memories events that occurred 20, 30 or even forty years ago. Such results raise further questions on the influence of repression on individuals. The questions look into whether repressed memories influence personality and behavior and the reality of the memories.

If one chose to live simpler lifestyles and slow down their lives a bit and relax rather than overwhelming themselves with so much, maybe they would be able to enjoy their lives more. Managing time will lead to extra time to go out and create memories, and focus on living and being happy. Even being a work-in-progress, I have a solid foundation, strong internal support and blueprints of the person I will become. And the day I become a complete multi-colored sculptor of experiences and hard work, I will have helped and inspired others to do the same.
The hindsight bias, as defined in the article Hindsight Bias and Developing Theories of Mind by Andrew N. Meltzoff and Geoffrey R. Loftus, occurs when “people armed with advanced knowledge of an outcome overestimate the likelihood of that particular outcome, in essence claiming that they ‘knew it all along’” (Meltzoff). People who are victims of this very common bias can be drawn to the idea of going to the past to fix all of their problems because they live in the present. Knowing what the present holds, people believe that if they went back in time, they could change the future and, in turn, have a better
