Promoting Tolerance and Ending Prejudice In today’s world, there are numerous places where people create a society that is full of diversity. Although these societies exist, we have people who do not have tolerance for others because of the differences among each other. These differences include race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation and more. In our society, there are also multiple prejudices which prevent us from understanding each other. The relationship between tolerance and prejudice is that if we promote tolerance, we slowly end prejudice. The only way in which we can live happier and healthier lives is if we let go of all the negatives and begin to understand one another. There are several reasons as to why it is significant
Arizona State University (2005), stated humans have learned to be prejudiced “through evolution as an adaptive response to protect ourselves from danger”. However, this instinct goes wrong because a majority of people are unable to see past prejudices and develop better understandings of their environments. This often results in harmful acts between different groups and would suggest that it must be controlled if not eliminated. Based on Rauch's thinking however, prejudice and its developments should not be removed from public environments like the university campus because it is necessary to have true intellectual pluralism based on unfiltered human thoughts. The question remains of whether the benefits of intellectual pluralism have to come at the cost of allowing harmful acts of prejudice to exist. In the university setting, the answer is no. So long as universities work to channel prejudice as a means of advancing knowledge the way Rauch believes it should, the negative developments of prejudice that people attempt to eradicate would be kept to a
The need to understand each other better and live in harmony is a reality and must be approached using multiple techniques including conversations. We must talk to each other to smooth out or differences and embrace our common attributes. Most conflicts are resolved after some form of dialogue. To stop discrimination or negative stereotyping of individuals or groups of people we should try to embrace conversations which will eventually lead to new laws that can protect the basic human rights of people and allow for people to be true to themselves without having to hide, cover or pretend to be what they are not,.Yoshino suggests using “reason-forcing conversations to address people forced to cover”(557) this conversations should occur informally and intimately in settings such as restaurants and should underscore certain reasons which include illegitimate issues such as homo phobia opining that such discourse are where tolerance can be made or unmade. The laws that govern our society should be dynamic allowing for changes that accommodate our human sensitivity and allow us to live together in better harmony with each other and our
Gone are the days of legalized slavery, of Nazi Germany, of women being incapable of having a notable opinion. No longer is there a system of racial segregation adopted by an entire country, complete white supremacy or lynchings performed by the Ku Klux Klan. Yet, although we are no longer exposed to such past experiences and despite us living in a world where diversity is embraced more than ever, the existence of prejudice remains. Today we have universally come to accept multiculturalism, varied ethnic backgrounds and those populations who historically were forever stigmatized. But in spite of these developments prejudice has manifested itself in other, more subtle ways and no matter how modernized society become such unfavourable attitudes
Discrimination is too common in the current day and age. It is used to help ignorant, weak people with insecurities to feel better about themselves. Humanity as a whole needs to learn to be more accepting of others, differences and all. Disney Pixar’s “Day and Night” is a short film about two characters, Day and Night, who couldn't look past each other’s differences in the beginning, yet by the end, they developed a mutual appreciation of each other through getting over their fear of the unknown and discriminating others. In “Day and Night,” the characters’ lack of understanding and prejudice paradoxically assists the characters, Day and Night, in developing tolerance for each other and learning to embrace their differences. Ultimately, “Day and Night” proposes that even though the unknown is not well-perceived by others until they experience the said "unknown" themselves, humanity should be less judgmental and more open-minded because nobody is perfect and everyone is different and perfectly unique in their own way.
Prejudice and the Holocaust Prejudice was the main factor that led to the holocaust. For some, resisting these forms of oppression was survival. Considering the dehumanizing the Nazis had forced upon the Jews, people took whatever courage and strength they had to get through this period of time. I believe luck also had a part to play in survival.
In reality we should see each other as equal, because if not it limits us and it will become harder to achieve our full potential. We can not hide our true selves and try to become something we are not, because what’s the point? All that’s doing is promoting judgment and we will get nowhere because there will always be second thoughts on our next actions. The moment we stop and accept everybody for who they are is the same moment we release our true selves and show others what we really can
Tolerance is the willingness to accept something, in particular the existence of opinions or behavior that one does not necessarily agree with. Why do people mistreat others; how do societies form despite differences? Tolerance is a major theme in Collection 1, especially in the text “Texas v. Johnson” by William J. Brennan, “The American Flag Stands for Tolerance” by Ronald J. Allen and To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. In this collection,Ourselves and Others, tolerance is viewed as the allowance of something that is usually what one doesn’t agree with and shows it in a society where people have a high tolerance and others have near none, for better or for worse.
In an allegedly postmodern world, when looking at tolerance for ideologies other than our own is said to be the only absolute and controlling ideology. Inasmuch, as its doctrine of “sin” suggests that all humans are inherently flawed; Christianity is often viewed as judgmental and intolerant of others. Granted the approach of a certain Baptist church in Topeka, Kansas pushes the extreme that makes all Christians cringe in this area. Christians should not be embarrassed of the doctrine of sin today. Moreover, Christianity should not try to soften what it says about the human condition to be more readily acceptable to a broader world. This world needs help, guidance, and rules if we are to succeed as a human race.
In our global economy requiring functional and respectful relationships between nations, prejudice and stereotypes can be a destructive force both in the world and in individual societies, especially in diverse ones.
Throughout history, there have been various perspectives of multicultural differences. According to Meriam Webster (n.d.), culture is “the beliefs, customs, arts, institutions, and the thoughts or products of a particular society or group.” Unfortunately, African Americans, Native Americans, Italians, Irish, Jews as well as various other cultural groups have been profoundly discriminated against and negatively stereotyped (Good Therapy org.). With the frequent mingling of cultures in educational settings, the workplace, and in the social arena, we are bound to encounter cultural differences.
The basis for this concept, begins with the causes of prejudice. While there are many causes that relate to prejudice, the context ...
Racism comes in many forms and fashions. Reasons for this intolerance, are just as varied and numerous. Intolerance is displayed by humans toward one another in regards to skin color, ethnicity, religions and personal sexual habits, among a few. Comparably, some are taught through environment, the temperament that was prevalent in the households were one was reared, from acquaintances and from revered people that one connects with on life’s journeys, and from world views, among a few.
Ever since our ancestors first began to diverge on the evolutionary tree there has been prejudice along with fear or hatred of those who are different, both of the aforementioned feelings are the flu of beliefs, as both hatred of dissimilar and the prejudice that comes with it can greatly harm people when it goes unchecked for too long. It’s one of humankind’s greatest accomplishments, considering that it never leaves, and that it is always seeming to ruin everything. Many works have tried to encapsulate what prejudice is or what it feels like, be it fact or fiction, though few really get the sensation across in the way that actually experiencing it does. Despite the fact that some select groups get it easier than others, namely white straight
Living in a diverse world should be something a person should be proud of. Getting to know a person’s culture and their beliefs should be a wonderful ability. Respecting one another is important, even though a lot of people still disregard that, which should discontinue. We should all start to learn how to make this world a better place,
Our world is constantly changing and it requires a society that is well versed in understanding the problems deriving from culture differences and tolerance of one another’s beliefs and perceptions. We are dealing with systemic problems in education, economic, government, religion and culture differences.
