Why Democracy is better than Monarchy “Let us never forget that government is ourselves and not an alien power over us. The ultimate rulers of our democracy are not a President and senators and congressmen and government officials, but the voters of this country” -FDR.
Monarchy used to be the most common form of government in the world, and this was so until the 19th century. Ever since the Constitution of the U.S was adopted in 1788, though, democracy has risen to become the most prevalent form of government in the world.Democracy is the wonderful form of government that we have in the United States. Democracy is great because the government does not have extreme control over the citizens. Although Monarchy was a successful form of government

For instance, everybody values their own opinion on all topics. In Rebecca Stefoff’s, Monarchy, she states that in a monarchy, “Opposition and dissent may be limited or forbidden,” (Stefoff 113). Stefoff shows that in a democracy, contrasting beliefs are not allowed. It would be terrible to live under rule where you are not allowed to voice your own opinion. Democracy is the great form of government that we have in the United States. In addition to the fact that everybody values their own opinions, in Tom Lansford’s book, Democracy, he explains, “At the core of democratic systems is the ideal of liberty” (Lansford 58). Lansford explains that in a democracy, freedom is valued. Liberty is one of the main principles of democracy. Specifically, Imagine if you were not allowed to own your own home. Also in Rebecca Stefoff’s, Monarchy, she explains that in a monarchy, there are “Limited property rights,” (Stefoff 113). In a democracy, citizens have many property rights. However, in a monarchy, people are not given as many rights to own property. To conclude, it is clear that it would be better to live under a democracy in the sense that there are many more freedoms in a
Before that can be established, I think a definition of democracy should be stated so that it may be called upon later in this essay. According to the American Heritage Dictionary, democracy is stated as "the principle of social equality and respect for the individual within a community" .
...stakes that were made and try to avoid them. Without a doubt, democracy was the answer for most of these governments. If leaders were formally elected by citizens to represent them, the representative would not abuse their powers. If there was indeed a loophole in the way this system worked, the government would elect again to make further decisions. If King George III considered a democracy rather than a monarchy, the British Regency Crisis would not have existed. If the directory had made decisions as a whole rather than Napoleon crowning himself as dictator, many wars would most definitely be prevented. If monarchy was not the way the French government worked during 1770’s, the Queen would not have been a young, inexperienced fifteen year old girl, Marie Antoinette. The abuse and misuse of power from these absolute monarchs inevitably led to the rise democracy.
For hundreds of years, those who have read Henry V, or have seen the play performed, have admired Henry V's skills and decisions as a leader. Some assert that Henry V should be glorified and seen as an "ideal Christian king". Rejecting that idea completely, I would like to argue that Henry V should not be seen as the "ideal Christian king", but rather as a classic example of a Machiavellian ruler. If looking at the play superficially, Henry V may seem to be a religious, moral, and merciful ruler; however it was Niccolo Machiavelli himself that stated in his book, The Prince, that a ruler must "appear all mercy, all faith, all honesty, all humanity, [and] all religion" in order to keep control over his subjects (70). In the second act of the play, Henry V very convincingly acts as if he has no clue as to what the conspirators are planning behind his back, only to seconds later reveal he knew about their treacherous plans all along. If he can act as though he knows nothing of the conspirators' plans, what is to say that he acting elsewhere in the play, and only appearing to be a certain way? By delving deeper into the characteristics and behaviors of Henry V, I hope to reveal him to be a true Machiavellian ruler, rather than an "ideal king".
In fact, it was the founding fathers themselves who warned us that a country under democratic rule would never be able to function properly. They feared a democracy as much as they feared a monarchy from developing. The founding fathers knew that a country based on a democracy would either become too weak or too powerful. If it became too powerful it would lead to tyranny of the majority. This would cause oppression to the small minority groups, leading to a lack of individual freedom, liberty, and rights. Instead, the founding fathers intended for this country to be based on a constitutional republic, in which protection and rights would be equally given under a written law that would also limit the power of the government. This is probably a really good reason why our pledge of allegiance refers “to the Republic” and not “to the democracy”, and why the word democracy is nowhere o be found in the
Democracy is control by the people. On the surface, this appears to be a superior form, but as Plato warned it is slow to react, oppresses of the minority, and lacks skilled leaders (Perry,
a few ways a dictatorship has advantages over democracy it's more efficient. A dictatorship is a
Human history is pock-marked with innumerable wars and revolutions. The cause for most of the revolutions has been the choice of freedom. The opportunity to live a life without physical, mental or emotional restrictions has been and still is of supreme importance to man. This has resulted in the most widely followed discipline of political governance: Democracy.
A memorable expression said by President Abraham Lincoln reads, “Democracy is government of the people, by the people, and for the people”. Democracy, is a derived from the Greek term "demos" which means people. It is a successful, system of government that vests power to the public or majority. Adopted by the United States in 1776, a democratic government has six basic characteristics: (i) established/elected sovereignty (where power and civic responsibility are exercised either directly by the public or their freely agreed elected representative(s)), (ii) majority rule(vs minority), (iii) (protects one’s own and reside with) human rights, (iv) regular free and fair elections to citizens (upon a certain age), (v) responsibility of
One of the contemporary definitions of democracy today is as follows: “Government by the people, exercised either directly or through elected representatives; Rule by the majority” (“Democracy” Def.1,4). Democracy, as a form of government, was a radical idea when it manifested; many governments in the early history of the world were totalitarian or tyrannical in nature, due to overarching beliefs that the strong ruled over the weak.
More importantly, what is a democracy exactly? Some would define it as a form of government where the people rule, others as where the poor rule, and I would say it is where everyone contributes in how the government is ran but do not control the final decisions made. In Aristotle 's "Democracy and Oligarchy", he discusses the different kinds of democracies that exist and how equality plays a huge role in defining it. Without equality, or even limiting it, it can change a democracy into an oligarchy. He goes into detail about each kind there is and further analyzes how regardless of having similar elements, they are each unique in their own way.
... result of a direct democracy, complications like getting every citizen to vote on every single issue, something close to impossible with modern populations that grow like grass in springtime. These changes have caused democracy to become intertwined with other forms of government, and while they have caused a deviation from pure democracy, they have allowed countless nations to function efficiently while maintaining the basic pillar of democracy: that ultimate authority and power is derived from the citizens.
In the end, democracy is the best form of government. It gives people a say in who should rule, it allows the best decisions to be made, and laws that are fair and just according to the majority of that societies’ needs. This can provide a very good and peaceful country, and that’s why democracy is a better form of government than oligarchy, dictatorship, communism, or monarchy. Government is needed to control and bring peace to a society, which other forms of government cannot do to the best of their ability due to their structure. In conclusion, democracy is the best form of government for the people.
In addition, democracy maintains the right of choice. These characteristics are the most appealing and dominate because people can formulate decisions based on their cultural, religious, interpersonal, intrapersonal beliefs that outline who...
Democracy has come to mean a principle under whose flag has most of the developed countries aced in their race for Imperialism. It has gone beyond all previous governing systems and has made room for progress and development. By offering free and fair elections, democracy has redefined human dignity and patriotism. It has also helped to improve decision-making among the citizens, and brought down the crime level. Democracy is for sure the most fitting among the other types of government, and needs to be implemented fully for effective functioning of a state.
What is democracy? Democracy a form of government in which the people freely elect representatives to govern them in a country, democracy guarantees free and fair elections, basic personal and political rights and independent court of law. There are two types of democracy, direct and indirect democracy. Direct democracy or pure democracy is where there is direct participate of the people; people make decisions for them instead of letting them representative make decision for them. Indirect democracy the decisions are made by the representative on behalf of the people that voted for them. All over the world people are having different views with regard to democracy and how it operates. “It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried” ~ Winston Churchill, some have said democracy is the worst government form of government which I also think it’s! Due to the how it operates.
