Timothy Donald Cook is the current CEO of Apple Inc.; outstanding from Apple Cook also holds a seat on the board of directors of Nike and the national football foundation. What makes Cook an amazing manager and leader is his ability to fuse calculative methods of management with his own ethical beliefs to make a form of management that is effective yet comfortable for his personnel. Cook is the first CEO to come out and openly inform the public of being Gay, instead of hiding this from the public he shared it and he took pride in being gay. Cook later influenced the company to celebrate and march in the 2015 San Francisco pride parade, it celebrated the rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender and over 8000 Apple employees attended. "Last year Apple spent more than $3 billion … Promoting business opportunities through many partner organizations such as the National Minority Supplier Development Council, the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council, the National Veteran-Owned Business Association, and the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (Creating jobs through innovation. 2015)”. Another major factor of diversity that Cook spent time on was race, he spend the past several years motivating and changing the culture of the company to focus on employing a more diverse group of individuals to allow the company to strive more and increase innovation. In a message Cook wrote to the public on Apple's website "In the past year we hired over 11,000 women globally, which is 65 percent more than in the previous year. In the United States, we hired more than 2,200 Black employees — a 50 percent increase over last year — and 2,700 Hispanic employees, a 66 percent increase… in the first 6 months of this year, nearly 50 percent of the people we’ve hired in the United States are women, Black, Hispanic, or Native American"(Inclusion inspires innovation.
Andrew Foster was a teacher, missionary, and pioneer, He dedicated his life to helping Deaf people learn ASL, and working to assure that Deaf people in Africa had access to education. He was passionate about helping the less fortunate, and felt compelled to go to Africa to do mission work. He stated in some of his writings that he was, “moved by this vast educational and spiritual void among my people.”
The healthcare workforce is suffering critically due to its lack in diversity. As healthcare organizations are growing and the number of patients is increasing, so is the diversity of the patients. There are more minority patients are the number of minorities increase in the United States. The need for minority employees is crucial in that they are needed to help assist patients who have the similar cultural, racial, and ethnic upbringings. There are many barriers in healthcare workforce that are keeping minorities from reaching their full potential to become employees in healthcare, particularly upper-level leadership positions; as patients continue to become more diverse, so does the need of employees.
Institutions in the businesses sector are swarming in racial discrimination, much of which is covert and difficult to detect and prove. Racial discrimination excludes, marginalizes and exploits those citizens who are discriminated against, ceasing any opportunity for economic progress and development. Under certain regulations some businesses are required to diversify their workplace by hiring certain amounts of people of color, but in reality these small quotas do not do much for the overall condition of the people who are being discriminated against. Businesses that fail to take action on racial discrimination tend to have lower levels of productivity. This stems from employees not being interested in working hard, or because people with exceptional talents and skills choose to shy away from certain places of employment due to the fear of racial discrimination. Employees who feel wronged also tend to switch jobs, forcing the organization to spend more time and resources on hiring and training new employees, besides coping with the low productivity of a new employee.
