Internal conflict is the struggle within a character between opposing feelings, beliefs, or needs. Success or failure can be the results of internal conflict, depending on the amount of thought and action put into the character’s conflict. The short story “Through the Tunnel” by Doris Lessing clearly portrays the literary concept of internal conflict through the experiences of Jerry and his mother. The luxurious beach getaway is tampered with great amounts of internal conflict as they battle within themselves in order for Jerry to spend over two minutes underwater in the tunnel and for his mother to create a good distance with her son.
