In the novel Pictures of Hollis Woods by Patricia Reilly Giff, there are many examples of conflict. The self-conflict in this story is especially striking. Hollis Woods, the main character, has had her fair share of ups and downs, but when she met the Regans, the one family who offers her a home, things started to change. Hollis felt like she would finally be part of a stable family. The one problem was the fighting between the Old Man and Steven, the Old Man's son. They were constantly fighting with each other. Most of the time they fought about the most diminutive things like leaving the shed open overnight. The fighting wasn’t the real problem, though. The real problem was the way that Hollis perceived the fighting. The following quote
from the novel shows just how much Hollis blames herself for this: “ ‘Do they always fight?´ I asked. ‘Or…’ -- I hesitated, trying to sound as if I didn’t care, as if it weren’t important -- ‘do you think it’s because I’m here?’ ” (69). Based on the excerpt from the novel, you can tell that this will lead Hollis to believe that she is the cause of this dispute. Hollis solves this quandary by running away from the Regans. Running away is quite possibly the most unfavorable thing that she could’ve done. Though she did not handle the problem in the most culminating respect, Hollis Woods did exercise the conflict at hand. Considering the way Hollis Woods handled the conflict, along with the reaction to it, led me to believe that there must be a better way to control the manner in a positive respect. I would have preferred Hollis to have talked to Steven, who she seemed very close to. Hollis could have also talked to the Old Man, and she might benefit the situation by simply asking him if Steven was being compared to herself. This may have aided the progression of Steven and the Old Man’s relationship. Had Hollis handled the animosity in a tolerable demeanor, like the example above, she would have had an exceptional time with a stable family, the Regans. Although Hollis Woods could have handled the conflict in a more unobtrusive way, she handled it in the way she saw fit.
It is the day Cali will remember for the rest of her life, for it is the day Cali Millhouse discovers her uncle was murdered by a family member. It is Two o'clock and half of the town of Rosewood is piling inside the local funeral home. Mrs. Dunham pays her respects to everyone except Cali’s father, Steve, for Mrs. Dunham finds him to be evil. Maybe she is right, and he killed Cali’s uncle? Whether he was or not, it is still a sad day and she needed the comfort of her father. That morning the sheriff came by and informed Cali and her family that someone related to Keith killed him. Surprisingly, her father made a comment that he believed it was her Aunt Audrey. Audrey was a money hungry, mean, gold-digger who dated men for their money, and she knew Keith had a two billion dollar company that would be left to someone if he passed.Steve felt much animosity towards his older sister, and would vituperate her name any chance he got. Audrey blamed Steve as much as her blamed her, nevertheless you could feel their acrimony towards each
In the book, Shattered, the book is about a teen who begins to mature as he ages. The main character is starting to become more mature after he gets a placement at a soup kitchen. He starts to realise that there are many problems going on in the society. There are many types of conflicts that are going on around him. The four types of conflicts going on in the book are Human vs. Society, Human vs. Self, Human vs. Human and Human vs. Self. The one conflict that is really making this story apparent is Human vs. Society due to the Rwandan genocide. The Human vs. Self, Human vs. Human, Human vs. Self are the other conflicts that are making this story interesting after the Human vs. Society conflict.
Conflicts influence someone’s actions and decisions because they can control whether to make it bigger or make it better. In this case, Rex made some decisions to make things have a good turnout instead of bad. Jeannette uses many literary devices to tell this book, and to introduce adversity. There were many other conflicts in the book that turned out bad, because of the decisions that were made. Bravery is something Jeannette and her family have, because of everything they have dealt with and been through. Adversity popped up often in the book, Jeannette made people realize it by her literary
There are six main characters in this story: Mark, David, Susan, Jeff, Betsy, and Mr. Griffin. The most influential would be Mark. He is the one who comes up with the plan to kidnap Mr. Griffin. He is not a very good student and has a reputation of being a "bad boy." Next there is David. David is supposed to be one of the better kids in the story. He is a senior who is in the same class as Mark and the other characters. His role in the kidnapping is to get Susan to go along with the plan., and to help with the kidnapping itself. He seems to be a rather good kid in the beginning of the story but he progresses to be one of the bad ones. He has a very stressful home life with his mom and grandma. Then there is Susan. Susan is the good student and kid of the group. She is thought of as unpopular and a geek. She is very bright considering that she is a junior and is taking an English IV class. She is supposed to distract Mr. Griffin by having a meeting with him after school on the day of the event. She then gets pulled into the conflict even further when she wants to go to the police when Mr. Griffin dies. She almost gets
...he story with the various characters. Melinda’s acquaintance, Heather works hard at finding friends and becoming popular, but in the end she turns away from Melinda. The story is about the high school years. Many times when we are growing up we can’t wait to get there because we will be treated as adults, but the truth is the problems that come along when we are older can be difficult. The various clans of students help present the theme by showing us that there are many different types of people. The popular cheerleaders, the jocks, the geeks and those who are just trying to fit in. Melinda transforming the janitor’s closet symbolizes her hiding her feelings and Melinda’s inability to speak and tell people what happened to her. High school can be fun but unfortunately through the eyes of Melinda it was a very hard time.
On one side, there is Kathy Nicolo and Sheriff Lester Burdon who want the house from which Kathy was evicted. It previously belonged to Kathy’s father and she is reluctant to relinquish possession of it. Then there is the Behranis, a Persian family who was forced to flee to America in fear of their lives. They want the house because it symbolizes their rise from poverty (they had to leave everything behind and were quite poor when they arrived in the United States) back to affluence which, to this family, will help to restore their family’s dignity, lost when thrust into poverty. The story centers on gaining possession of the house. Unknowingly, all of these characters are doomed to tragedy by their inability to understand each other, hurtling down an explosive collision course.
The story is concerned with the conflict between his conception of himself and the reality.
For starters, man vs self is a very common conflict that appears in my book. Shane, who was diagnosed with a disease at a young age, faces some challenges in his life. At first, he struggled with his disability and struggled to meet new people. However, Shane took action and decided that he could do so much more in life. Shane would overcome his challenges and would allow himself to do greater things. Another book that has a man vs self conflict is Catching Fire, the second book of The Hunger Game series, by Suzanne Collins. The protagonist, Katniss Everdeen, struggles with internal conflicts with her role in the rebellion and her own guilt (enotes).
The film chronicles the histories of three fathers, and manages to relates and link their events and situations. First is Mitchell Stephens and his relationship with his drug-addict daughter. Second is Sam, and the secret affair he is having with his young daughter Nicole. He is somewhat of a narcissistic character because of his preoccupation with himself and pleasing himself, and his lack of empathy throughout the film for the others in the town. Third is Billy, who loves his two children so much that he follows behind the school bus every day waving at them. Billy is also having an affair with a married woman who owns the town’s only motel. On the exterior the town is an average place with good people just living their lives. But, beneath all the small town simplicity is a web of lies and secrets, some which must be dealt with in the face of this tragedy.
There is no greater conflict than the conflict of Love vs. Hate. The characters in this book on the side of Hate, stood alone, they wouldn’t let anyone in and always lost their battles. The characters on the side Love, always stood together, and were never selfish, and never left anyone behind. Although the Love side stood together, they were the underdogs. They never could catch a break, but because they always worked together, they overcame their obstacles, and that's why they were classic underdogs. The main character of this story, was a big underdog. She always lost those she loved and was blinded by pain. Grandmother Moccasin, the main character, caused lots of pain
Identify the different conflict episodes that exist in this case? Who was in conflict with whom? 3 points
I believe the conflict in the story is an internal one. I think it is the conflict between the old woman's will power and Mother Nature. She encounters many obstacles that would influence most people to give up but she has motivation to get her task done. These encounters include a bush catching onto her dress, a scarecrow frightening her and discouragement from a white man. She also had to climb hills, cross streams and crawl under barbed wire fences which is certainly not considered an easy task for an elderly woman.. If I was forced to deal with these obstacles I know that I would most likely have turned around but her will power was too strong to let Mother Nature win.
In “Still Handsome,” the main character's tiny brother had a virus and he had to fight for his life; the message was one should cheer other people up even through rough times . It was winter when the little boy had major pain in his arm and he cried throughout the night. The following day, he drove around in his toy vehicle around the neighborhood. He fell off his car and the pain wasn't only a broken arm but, he had bone cancer as well. After a slow recovery, he had lost all of his hair but, his older relative told him he was handsome and he was going to be all right
