All these factors have an enormous influence on how we act, what we believe, and how we perceive things. None of these factors can act without affecting one another. For example, as young children our perception of the world mainly comes from what our parent’s perception of the world is. So when we attend school children will tend to repeat what their parents taught them. If a parent is a racist the child will most likely develop a racist personality until him or her are exposed to something differently. In the same way, institution teach children about their identities and the roles they are expected to fulfill in society. A child will go home and share with their parents what the have learned in school. Finally, media also affects children’s actions and beliefs. If a child has no personal experience of a media representation of a minority this will rely on the media to make judgments of minorities or an outer group when they
Media plays a significant role in determining the perception students have on attending school. For instance, if the media portrays the environment in a junior high to be harsh and ruthless, the students will assume a similar situation will occur. The media can change our perception on various levels of issues therefore, we must stay vigilant on the types of programs we allow our youths to watch. From the types of clothing TV actors/actresses wear could be a factor on the type of clothes a student wears to school as well as the stereotypes placed on race and ethnicity based on what the media portrays.
In every society nonverbal communication is one of the most powerful tools that a person can use to interpret the message that is being delivered. Even though verbal communication is fairly straightforward, nonverbal communication allows others to sense the true emotions of the person that is expressing them. For example even though a person may say that they are not irritated, their usage of voice may display otherwise. Nonverbal communication not only reveals hidden messages, but it also complements, substitutes, and exaggerates verbal communication.
As I planed to take this class, I thought this course would be like all other general education courses. I believed that it would be of little use to me. However, after attending the first class, my view has changed completely. I applied each and every theory to my life.
The effect of the media on young children is especially salient. Young children often learn how to act and behave from what they observe at home, from the adults and older peers they come in contact with, and from what they see on television.
Then, the never yet to be forgotten, media, comes into viewpoint. Most would say that the media sends out so many messages, that a child could not live without acquiring some mental picture of their own about what is trying to be taught. But could that child’s own opinion about that message be completely negative, and totally not what was intended?
It is also possible to extract evidence of the importance of social communication in language development from children brought up in total isolation. These children may have certain contact with other humans, but are deprived of all social interaction. One clear example of a child kept in isolation is the case of “Genie”, who was subjected to extremely severe abuse and mistreatment by her own father when she was kept in isolation for approximately 13 years, and was consequently never exposed to any significant amount of speech. Curtis (1977) perceived the case of Genie as a unique opportunity to study the human development of language, and found that Genie would never be able to have proficient grammar and never learn good syntax and produce correct sentences. The case of Genie created the hypotheses of “critical periods” in the learning of language, suggesting that first languages are easier acquired before puberty and learned more efficiently. However, Genie learned some language skills, which hints that some level of language attainment is possible even after a critical period. However, one should remember that linguistic deprivation is usually related with other kinds of deficiency and it becomes difficult to separate these effects from each other.
Media has become a major part of our lives. Indeed it has shape the way we perceive other races. Minority races such as Latinos, African American, Native American and Asians are being misrepresented in media. Media has a huge impact on race, by presenting race stereotypes media is telling us that certain races behave a particular way which shapes the way society sees them and in many times the way they see themselves. We tend to believe everything media says about us and other races without questioning if it is actually true.
According to article entitled “ Marriage Quality” published by Comstock and Sterzizweick in 1990 states that “it is not absence or presence of problem which determines the marriage quality but it is how successful to handle conflicts, that determine marital relationship quality.
Media also influences the thinking of people and society in general through entertainment as well as advertising and marketing campaigns. It is the creative ideas and boost to the imagination that people get once they watch a television show, movie, commercial or listen to a certain song. The impact any of these forms of media can have on an individual’s thinking can change in that most of them view the various stars in the movies, TV or the music industry as role models and as a result, they start imitating them. Children begin to develop a sense of self, of belonging, gender and racial identity at an early age. Children will absorb bias, stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination if they are exposed and practiced them in their world, unless guided otherwise.
Everyday we encounter the media in some form. It could be waking up to the sound of the radio, or passing billboards in the streets or simply just watching television. They are a lot of different forms of media, for example, verbal or written media, visual media and aural media. Examples of media would include newspapers, magazines, film, radio, television, billboard advertisements as well as the internet. Media studies came about because of the developments in mass communication and it provokes the generation of exigent questions about what we think we know as well how we came about knowing it. There are always changes in the media and the term “media” refers to the many ways of physically forming meanings as well and carrying them. The term “media studies” on the other hand, means different courses priorities different media; different theories and different learning outcomes (Bazalgette, 2000).
When examining a study from a constructivist lens, the researcher must ask themselves: How does learning occur? What is the mechanism behind learning? Is it external? Internal? Due to social connections? These are example guiding questions constructivist researchers seek to answer. Constructivism is defined as individuals constructing their own knowledge of the world either internally, or externally by interacting with individuals. When individuals encounter a new experience, it causes them to compare it to their previous idea or experience. This interaction leads to a change in what the individuals believe, or a discardment of the new information. At some point every human tests and revises their knowledge through interactions and experiences. Examples of these experiences can be the classroom, home, and interactions with people. The effectiveness of one’s communication can significantly impact one’s ability to initiate, develop, and maintain personal, therapeutic, and interprofessional relationships. According to Casey and Wallis, “Without it, people cannot relate to those around them, make their needs and concerns known or make sense of what is happening to them,” (2011, p.35).
The presence, or absence, of skills that relate to communication with oneself (intrapersonal communication) are critical influencers of many other aspects of oneself (Beebe, 2015). In particular, one’s intrapersonal communication impresses on one’s intrapersonal communication: mutual communication between yourself and at least one other (Beebe, 2015). The relationship between these two types of communication is complex and worth exploring. Using examples from seminar and my own life, in this paper, I will analyze my own self-concept and perception, and relate my intrapersonal communication skills to their effects on my interpersonal communication skills.
