REFLECTIVE ESSAY ON THERAPEUTIC COMMUNICATION

Being a nurse, good communication skills are a key tool for achieving required health care targets (Wachtel, 2011). Therapeutic communication is a best way of communication between the carer and the patient (Sherko, Sotiri & Lika, 2013). It is a condition of correspondence between a patient and all the health professionals, like the nurse, that includes systems and procedures which successfully advance communication and furthermore build up a decent relationship between the two. I will consider a correspondence situation between a medicinal services specialist and a patient and a patient's relative. Further, I will toss a light on how I investigate this discussion.

For example, nurse approached to the patient by introducing himself was an integral part of therapeutic communication (Rosenberg & Gallo- Silver, 2011). Further, he managed to establish, sustains and concludes relationships in a way that differentiates the boundaries between professional and personal relationships (Registered nurse standards for practice,2016). It is important to provide appropriate information about the procedures to the patient. As the nurse explained the patient about the thermometer and how it is used. Asking for a consent before performing the procedure was effective to actively fosters a culture of safety and learning that includes engaging with health professionals and others, to share knowledge and practice that supports person-centred care (Registered nurse standards for practice,2016). Non-verbal communication is the key role to the best therapeutic communication and to become a good nurse I would emphasise more on that to show that whether I am concerned about the patient or not. A decent non-verbal communication comprises of: outward appearances, pose, signals, eye to eye connection, touch and giving individual space. What I have learnt from the video is that the hand gestures are the great tool to explain the procedure that are going to be taking place. I feel as if there could be improvement because communication from nurse to patient is an extremely important one as it helps the patient feel comfortable and confident in what could be an upsetting time. As the nurse was unable to ask questions more general questions to make the patient feel comfortable. Patients can express their problems more effectively if a nurse gains their trust as they are able to trust the nurse which leads to the best patient’s best health outcomes and as well as good therapeutic environment. Thus, I feel if the nurse could build a good conversation with the patient, he could have collected more cues about the patient’s health easily for example asking his dietary or smoking/alcohol habits which could have helped the doctor to assess the patient easily and ensuring that patient was fine to leave the
