Throughout history, from ancient Rome to the present day, comedy has always been used in all forms of entertainment to instill the audience with feelings of pleasure and joy. Shakespeare’s use of comedy in the play Hamlet, has been analyzed in many different ways. Some believe that comedic themes in Hamlet, such as him developing a cynical attitude towards other after the passing of his father, are the real meaning of the comedy in this play. Although people may interpret that theme, the true purpose of comedy is to deflate scenes of high tension following a serious moment in the story, its simply for the comic relief of the audience. Every tragic event that is occurring or upcoming, Shakespeare incorporates comicality to release the build
up he created in the earlier scene. The famous To be or not to be soliloquy would have brought in the attention of the Elizabethan audience by incorporating the theme of suicide. Trailing this soliloquy is a debate with Polonius and Claudius on their recent investigation from spying on Ophelia and Hamlet: “It shall do well But yet do I believe the origin and commencement of his grief sprung from neglected love.” (Act ll, scene 1). Polonius believes that Hamlet is still in love with Ophelia and explains to the king why that’s the reason for his madness. The humor in this scene is Polonius being so clueless on the real events that are occurring in Hamlet’s life although the audience knows the truth, giving this play an amount of dramatic irony. You could argue that Polonius adds the theme of ignorance and duality into the play, making the viewers believe that maybe there is a slight chance that Hamlet is mad for Ophelia. Though the true use of the character Polonius, and his naivety, is there to release the tension of the audience. Shakespear was building up this intensity with the soliloquy Hamlet had spoken, then uses humor to release the strain he had put on the viewers.

In 1600, William Shakespeare composed what is considered the greatest tragedy of all time, Hamlet, the tragedy of the Prince of Denmark. His masterpiece forever redefined what tragedy should be. Critics have analyzed it word for word for nearly four hundred years, with each generation appreciating Hamlet in its own way. While Hamlet conforms, without a doubt, to Aristotle's definition of a tragedy, one question still lingers. Did Shakespeare intend for the reader or viewer of Hamlet to feel greater sympathy for Hamlet, or for Ophelia, Hamlet's lover? Both characters tug at the heartstrings throughout the play, but it is clear that 'the tragedy of the Prince of Denmark' is a misrepresentation of Shakespeare's true intention.
There is a few bits of thoughtful laughter in hamlet. A good example is Hamlet himself being a person who says some very smart things but is just completely insane. Most things he says takes some thought to convert it over to english we know and love today, but after you get that out of the way and think about the statements some they become entertaining. He states many things about others but never seems to think of how they see him. He completely makes himself look crazy without even the thought of it coming into mind. This adds to the unknowing stance that Hamlet has in the story. He is aware of everything around him but he is not yet aware of himself.
The motif of acting is a central literary device of Hamlet – the audience witnesses Hamlet, as well as the other characters of the play, adopt ‘roles’ as no one is truly who they ‘seem’. This is first addressed by Hamlet in the beginning of the play when he responds to his mothers’ request to “cast thy nightly colour off”, and not to forever mourn his father as “all that lives must die,/Passing through nature to eternity”. He expresses that his “shows of grief” can ‘seem’ as “they are actions a man might play”. In conclusion, a comic relief is used to relieve tension and to contrast serious scenes to increase the ultimate tragic nature of the play. Polonius uses his self absorbed dull personality to create humor in his scenes. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern act as the fool by their tactless actions and dialogue, their lightheartedness makes the tragic parts of the play seem all the more tragic. And finally Hamlet uses his morbid humor to intensify scenes of sorrow while he also bitterly teases others to relieve tensions at times. The comic relief in Shakespeare’s Hamlet contrasts intense scenes as to make them more intense.
For being considered one of the greatest English plays ever written, very little action actually occurs in Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The links between Shakespearean “comedies” are rather tenuous. There always seems to be some sort of problem which arises, threatening the lives or the happiness of the central characters.
