Williams has an appreciation of allusions to literature and popular culture throughout the play. Blanche tells her sister that “Only Mr. Edgar Allan Poe” could describe her housing situation. Poe is known in literature for his dark and eerie tales. Also, Mitch carries a tin with Elizabeth Browning’s poem “How Do I Love Thee?” inscribed on it. Blanche, a former English teacher, immediately recognizes the romantic sonnet. Mitch tells how a girl he cared for gave it to him when she knew she was going to die. This story links the two unlikely lovers, with Blanche suffering a similar loss in her late husband, Allan. The audience learns of Blanche’s attraction for young men when a boy comes by trying to sell a paper. According to Stella, these are important to Blanche and “her weakness (Williams 18).” However, Blanche instead points out her sister has “put on some weight (Williams 7)” before learning she is pregnant.
