For my first theater experience I elected to see A Streetcar Named Desire by famous playwright, Tennessee Williams. I chose this above all else because I had read the play in high school but I had never seen it actually acted out before. I thought seeing a play that I was familiar with would enhance my first theater experience. I saw the well-known play on October 6th, a calm Tuesday night. The venue of the play was at the Sandra Feinstein-Gamm Theatre in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. I ordered my ticket on the phone for 20 dollars which is quite inexpensive compared to other plays. Originally, the ticket would have been 40 dollars, but a friend of mine, who I went to high school with and was also going to see the play, informed me that tickets bought on the phone were half off. The play was scheduled for a 7pm with a run time of about three hours start so we left campus at 6:30pm. The ride to the Gamm Theatre was very pleasant. The sun was going down and my friend and I were having a conversation on what we expected from the play. When we arrived at the location and entered, I instantly noticed an overwhelming amount of older people in the lobby. I wasn’t surprised because I knew A Streetcar Named Desire was an older play that came out in their generation. I walked to the box office to get the ticket that I had reserved on the phone. I walked over to the entrance of the theater and was met by an usher who handed me a program and directed me to the seat. My seat was in the far left of theater. When I entered, I was surprised by the stage because I was expecting a proscenium theater but instead the audience was extremely close to the stage. Walking into the Grieb Theatre with both skepticism and little knowledge of the play that I was about to see, I exited with a little connection to some of the actors and a sense of mild disappointment from the play, although I thought to myself how difficult it must have been for the actors and the director to constantly feel the pressure about bringing up a topic of racism and discrimination to the community audience.
The audience, for the most part, seemed to be made up of college students attending for the same reasons as myself. However, there were some audience members who are part of older age groups in the audience. They were there only seeking a good performance and a great time. These older age group audience members were located mostly in the center section of the theatre seated in the first few rows. The dress was more casual among the students but dressier for the older people. Some people were in jeans and a T-shirt, including myself, while some wore nice clothes. The audience rewarded each soloist with a warm ovation of applause after their turn was finished. This led me to believe the audience enjoyed the performance and was very respectable to the performers.
All things considered, I did enjoy the play. I followed each scene and line easily, for the most part. It seemed as if everyone involved did their part and worked very hard. The story was good, the props and scenes were good, and the actors were good. I would possibly go see the play again in my spare time if given the opportunity. Despite the few negative things that I mentioned, the positive things outweigh them heavily and, with all of this said, the play was a success.
People have dreams of what they want to do or accomplish in life, but usually musical theatre is just pushed into the non-realistic void. It isn’t a dream for me. In the past four years, musical theatre has been clarified as my reality. Musical theatre has been the only thing I have seen myself wanting to do. My first love was The Phantom of the Opera, seeing how I watched it almost every day and it was one of the first shows I saw. Of course, I started doing all of those cute shows in middle school and making a huge deal about it to my family and friends, but I have never felt so passionate about something. I’ve never seen a play act out the history of the school I attend which was very eye catching to me because I really enjoy knowing history especially abut schools. Many schools don’t do that for numerous reasons but I am very glad that Prairie View A&M University had the chance to display this to the youth and everyone else who attended the play. This production does make me want to see more theatre because theatre is very interesting it resembles a movie but it’s more interesting to perform in front of a live audience and I feel as the play writer did a very good job at writing the play it’s just she should have inquired less music so that everything would have been more smoothly and not more on the confusing side that’s all other than that she did a fantastic job on putting everything together. In this paper, I will be focusing briefly on my knowledge and understanding of the concept of Applied theatre and one of its theatre form, which is Theatre in Education. The term Applied Theatre is a broad range of dramatic activity carried out by a crowd of diverse bodies and groups.
Theatre will always survive in our changing society. It provides us with a mirror of the society within which we live, and where conflicts we experience are acted out on stage before us. It provides us with characters with which we identify with. The audience observes the emotions and actions as they happen and share the experience with the characters in real time.
The evolution of theatre conventions began with highly presentational Greek productions and changed through the Medieval and Elizabethan ages to the current conventions. Greek conventions included performances done on a mostly bare stage, the use of internal stage directions to indicate location, episodic play structure, and a chorus that served multiple functions including setting the overall mood, commenting on or explaining the action, and creating reflection intervals. Other conventions included an all-male cast, the “Three Actor Rule,” the presence of a tragic hero, and the plays typically served the purpose of teaching the public or making a political statement. Many of these conventions evolved to adapt to the time period of the performances.
Throughout the late nineteen twenties and early nineteen thirties a significant development in the world of theater began. This movement was called The Workers' Theatre and it was partially shaped by the agitprop theatre of communist Russia. Agitprop theatre contained brief bits and were performed on transportable entities of theater. Agitprop Theater performers frequently performed songs which strained to enrage listeners to resist entrepreneurship and acknowledge the ways of communism. They wanted their audience to consent to the notion that the working-class would arise. The Russian Communist agitprop theatre correspondingly utilized presentations, presentational performing, lack of plot, and montages to promote their philosophies. Ultimately, The Worker’s Theatre weakened in significance during the mid-nineteen thirties and one of the developments assisting the deterioration of the Workers' Theatre Movement through use of various approaches and dramaturgical tools originated by The Worker’s Theatre was the establishment of the Federal Theatre Project. My experience watching a live theatre performance on stage was a fascinating one, most especially since it was my first time. I attended a staged performance of “The History Boys” in a small theatre called “The Little Theatre of Alexandria” at 8:00 pm on Wednesday June 8, 2016 in Alexandria, Virginia. The overall production of the play was a resounding experience for me particularly the performance of the actors and the design of the scene made the play seem real.
