Fad diets are unhealthy. Some people believe that fad diets work. Fad diets are getting more and more popular in the dieting market. In today’s society people should be more educated on these diets before using them and these fad diets should be prescribed to a qualified patient by a health physician or doctor to people that are heavily obese that need to lose weight rapidly to help them with their health. Fad diet supplements are wrong because they provide no nutrients for the body and people need to know that they need healthy nutrients for a healthy weight loss. Because these diets are non-nutritional for one’s body, many people are harming their bodies just by taking these pills. Not all fad diets are for everyone. Many people are quick to believe that these diet supplements will shred inches off their waste line and shed those extra pounds fast just from advertisement. There are a variety of problems with fad diets. These diets should not be sold over the counter because of the lack of knowledge behind these diets, health risks, false advertisement and misuse. Studies prove that these diets are for short term weight loss and that they do not work long term. Also a study has been proven that citizens that use these fad diets will lose some weight but end up going back to their original weight within three years. “Fad diets” is a term for popular media, not science. There is no standard definition of what a fad diet is. Fad diets claim to me scientific but do not follow the scientific method in establishing their validity. Diet supplements or diet plans that the inventor of the diet guarantees that their product will shed those extra pounds quickly, yeah that’s sounds like a good deal but is it healthy? Some fad diets endors... ... middle of paper ... ... some diet supplements out to people who qualify to use a diet supplement. Then why are many diet products still sold over the counter? These fad supplements are still sold over the counter because they are there for people who want to try out these diets and see if they work. Also they are still being sold because their advertisement tricks customers that if they want to lose those extra few pounds that they cannot get rid of. Fad diets do not work for those people. There is a big debate to whether these fad diets should only be prescribed. If these diets were only to be prescribed by doctors to patients with weight problems many of the dietary supplement companies would suffer and jobs would be lost. However, if the diet supplements were to only prescribed by doctors, many people wouldn’t be putting their health at risk with using over the counter diet products.
Recently, another weight loss supplement has stepped into the ever-increasing market. This drug, called Stimulife 750, is a supposedly all-natural herbal supplement that promotes weight loss without any effort from the client. Both the parent company – Stimulife International – and various distributors of Stimulife 750 make bold blanket statements such as “Stimulife 750 has everything good and nothing bad,” which set the success of the pill far higher than is possible. Furthermore, these individuals attempting to sell the product use a variety of marketing techniques to encourage purchasing the supplement; however, they provide no scientific evidence to support the claims they make regarding the safety and effectiveness of the product. By appealing to the clients’ desire for a natural and easy way to lose weight, providing pseudo-scientific statements to convey a sense of authenticity to the product, and befriending the client by seeming to care for their best interests, the distributers attempt to woo more clients. However, Stimulife 750 contains many ingredients included in other “unsafe” weight loss supplements and scientific research shows no clear evidence that Stimulife 750 is any more effective or safe as other diet pills.
In “Food as Thought: Resisting the Moralization of Eating” by, Mary Maxfield (pp.442-447), she affirms a bright argument about how food is not moral or immoral. Therefore, you can eat whatever you desire and not suffer any negative side effects, which she ignores. Her key points including stated facts such as “Culturally,we resist these scientific findings,” that people can be fat and healthy, “in favor of a perspective that considers fatness fatal and thinness immortal.”(pp.445) The main point to Maxfield’s claim in healthy eating, is being active and living a fit lifestyle. In “Escape From The Western Diet” (pp.420-427)by Michael Pollan, his argument is to help the American community be enlightened with
The Western Diet mainly consists of fried foods, refined grains, sugar, high carbohydrate and fats, and meats (3). It has been hypothesized that having a Western Diet increases one’s chances for developing depression. There has been a great deal of research into why the western diet increase’s one chance of having depression. A common sense reason maybe that the Western Diet consisted of large amounts carbohydrates, fats and sugars which promotes obesity and then causes depression (1). More scientific evidence suggest that having a improper diet like the Western Diet negatively affects peripheral and central dopamine, which are neurotransmitters (chemical which transmit signals across the synapse from the nerve cell to the target cell) directly linked to the mental health of the brain and are negatively affected by high fat diets (4). Research has also suggested that having a poor nutrition status such as lacking folate (a natural water form of vitamin bg which is crucial for many of the bodies processes) and key vitamins like vitamin b12 significantly increases the risk of depression in elderly people (5). Research into the topic of dietary habits and mental health is very crucial with the growing rates of obesity and depression in the United States compared to the rest of the world. Thus, does having poor dietary habits increase the likelihood of having depression? The likelihood of developing depression has been linked to the type of diet one consumes such as the Western Diet, Diets Low in Fat and Carbohydrates and weight control diets like binge eating.

The media bombards us with advertisements and articles about weight-loss supplements. We cannot turn on the television or radio without seeing or hearing an advertisement for Dexatrim, and we cannot flip through a magazine without seeing an advertisement or article about Metabolife. The manner in which different media sources treat weight-loss supplements greatly influences the public's perception of these products. This essay will examine a Newsweek article entitled "Mad about Metabolife," an advertisement for Hydroxycut from Mademoiselle, and a radio advertisement for Carbolife Gold to illustrate the manner in which the media presents the use of dietary supplements to promote weight loss.
As compared to all the other fad diets out there, the Paleo Diet is one that is principled and based on ancient history which makes it absolutely unique. Also, this form of diet does not promote starvation or crash dieting; rather you are taught how to basically improve on your food choices to get the best results.
Many of fad diets rely on gimmicks, things that makes the diet seem to be unique or more likely to work than other
Most Americans do not care enough to take a look at the nutritional values of the food that he or she is consuming. That is why America has the highest percentage of obesity in the world. This is a serious problem because one in every three adults is obese, and one in every six children is obese. There are many factors that go into the regular American diet, but most of those factors are not appealing nor is it healthy. Americans put way too much processed food into their daily diet. Some would say that other countries diets superior the American diet because of nutritional values that it carries. Other countries have proven that an active lifestyle is a huge element in the average weight of the country. There are many things that Americans could change about their diets and lifestyle that would help them to become healthier.
From a general perspective, fad diets enhance poor weight control over the long term. People are more focused on quick weight loss that they fail to learn and develop proper eating plans that would be useful perpetually. Additionally, there is an enhanced risk of developing chronic diseases such osteoporosis, high blood pressure, cancer, and congestive heart failure. Several fad diets remove or limit the intake of whole grains, dairy products, vegetables, and fruits, which are all useful in preventing several chronic
Crash or fad diets, quick loss diets, rapid weight loss diets, and flash or quick-fix diets are just some of the many popular names for weight loss programs and plans that promise to help you achieve weight loss fast and with long-term results. But are they really efficient?
One reason why, is that most people people that get on fad diets lose the weight quickly and gain back even more weight than what they were trying to loss in the first place. “Among those who were followed for fewer than two years, 23% gained back more weight than they had lost, while those who were followed for at least two years, 83% gained back more weight than they had lost.” (Wolpert) Those who go on a fad diet and take it further will Maintain to lose weight or just lose weight and have not gained back any more weight like other people do. “Only 5 percent to 10 percent of dieters maintain weight loss that’s greater than 10 percent of their initial weight.”
Don’t carelessly choose the diet pills. They might have earned a bad rap before, but despite their notoriety these drugs can greatly help fight obesity and excessive weight when used properly. Of course, these are still considered to be a kind of “last resort”, somewhere along the lines of liposuction, although less traumatizing. Still, it is something that has the power to drastically change one’s physiology, ideally for the good but unfortunately, some people venture otherwise.
Diet is defined as, “a regulated selections of foods, specially designed and prescribed for the medical and/or general nutritional reason.” When most people think of the word diet today they think of the dieting alternatives. In America today, there are serious cases of diabetes and obesity people have thought of two life changes to help them. The first is dieting in order to combat these while also making healthier choices. People have also fallen into fad diets for their speed and "effectiveness". There are some diets that will help people short term but when they quit they will gain all the weight back and in some cases they will have more serious health problems. Another problem with diets is that there are too many. So many diets to choose from and because of this people will fall for fad diets and they will have people hoping that this is the one to take away the weight. Then after months of not shedding a pound, they will lose hope and some give up on trying
