Fad diets can be very unhealthy. Not only does it affect your physical health, it affects your mental health as well. One of the reasons, why fad diets are unhealthy is that there is no balanced meal plan and the nutritional fact there is bad. Additionally,”people, will avoid food that their body's need.”(Melina) Not only that, the way it affects your physical health is by simply not getting enough fuel for your body to operate at its full potential. By limiting the proper food your body needs, your are stressing the body out. By not knowing when it is going to get its next meal, the body will begin to store more fat and that’s the opposite effect that you intended. Also, at least eat something small between meals. Fads in music, clothing, cell phones, apps or dancing all come and go like the wind in the United States. In my lifetime alone I can’t even remember the number of trendy things that have come and gone so quickly. From friendship bracelets to Gangnam style, fads are what the youth of today create. However, dieting fads can and do have much more significant effects to people than these other things. Rapid weight loss is unhealthy for the body and mind and it is easy to fall off the wagon with short term commitments. “The percentage of Americans who were obese more than doubled, from 15% to 31% of the population.” (Wolpert) Not eating and starving your body by chronic dieting is not healthy either. Even over exercising can have a toll on one's body! When an “extreme dieter” goes on a fad diet they will take the diets to the next level by doing whatever it takes to lose the weight they don't want. One gruesome example of extreme dieting are the people that ingest a parasite to help them lose the weight. “Truly desperate dieters have gone to extreme lengths to lose weight with tapeworms.” (Riggle) This to me seems a bit extreme considering the other possible consequences of having a parasite inside you. Those people that restrict their view to others foods and sticking just to one is not the healthiest choice leading to fatigue. “Diets that revolve around eating one food, be it cabbage soups bananas, are unhealthy
The article “The Skinny on Low-fat Diets” by Alan Ling is about the drawbacks of low-fat diets. The author talks about how low-fat diets don’t necessarily work and uses facts to strengthen her claim. One of the ways the author strengthen their claim is by showing the other side of the argument. The author includes this information to strengthen her claim and show readers that they can defend their argument from others.
In this essay “How Junk Food Can End Obesity,” published in 2013 issue of The Atlantic Daily, David Freedman explains how junk food is a better source of the organic food. Stressing the price and how many calories to natural/healthy smoothies and fast food /junk food. While most people believe junk food contributes to obesity, Freedman advocates eating junk food but making smart choices.
But not all fad diets are necessarily bad; some fad diets help with portions but are not supposed to be used for long periods of time. Weight Watchers for example, is supposed to help its users lose 10% of their body weight and then after
Imagine a diet with quick weight loss, and being able to see immense results in only a few months, sounds like the life doesn’t it? Well the impossible has finally become possible with the help of special diets, otherwise known as FAD diets. FAD diets are known as weight reducing diets of extreme nature that either eliminate one or more of the essential food groups or enhance the consumption of one group of food in excess, and intend to produce results more quickly than diet-exercise combinations. One specific FAD diet is known as the Cookie diet.
In the past, I have had to abide by a similar diet to increase my weight to a healthy level. Although it sounds easy, eating such large quantities of high-calorie and high-fat foods is extremely stressful. I was under constant pressure to consume more calories and had to plan out every single calorie I was going to eat well in advance. I quickly stopped enjoying food altogether and began viewing planning meals and eating as no more than two stressful chores. While people were jealous that my health depended on eating large amounts of high-calorie foods, all I wished for was the ability to skip a meal.
One of the main differences between healthy diet and exercise and fad dieting is they can yield very different long term results. When fad dieting, you may be able to drop quite a bit of weight in a short period of time, but rest assured you will most likely see those pounds again. Fad diets focus on losing weight too quickly. The initial weight you lose is water weight, but as soon as you go back to regular food the pounds lost will return. Fad dieting can also wreak havoc on your muscles, and cause your body to go into starvation mode. Fad dieting works off of the idea that since your body needs fat to produce energy, it will burn the access fat that is stored to get that energy. The problem with this theory is that when you deprive your body of the necessary nutrients it needs, it then stores all the fat it can and starts burning energy from your muscles. The loss of your muscles slows down your metabolism, thus making it more difficult to lose weight in the long run. Healthy dieting promotes a lifestyle change, allowing for results...
This turns into a cycle of weight loss and gain, which can increase “the risk of degenerative diseases such as obesity, type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and cancer” (Vaghefi par. 7). These diseases come into the picture due to the cycle. Fad diets promote weight loss, but not fat loss. When the goal weight is attained, and the diet stops, weight is put back on, which leads to more fat being put into the body than taken out and faster weight gain. When losing weight, the biggest way to avoid developing these major health issues is to “not believe or follow any of the fad diets that promise easy and quick weight loss, because there is no such thing” (Vaghefi par. 8). Safe and healthy weight loss happens gradually, with patience and with exercise and a balanced diet. Fad diets are dangerous and should not be used as they can cause major health
A million types of fad diets promise people to lose weight by using drugs or specific diet plans such as 5:2, paleo, hormone cure, virgin, bulletproof. Moreover, each type of fad diet has its own specific style. Studies show that 108 million people in the US follow fad diets (ABC News Staff, 2012). The fad diets are the same as fashion, where people use it enthusiastically for a period of time to give them beauty, elegant and perfect appearance. A fad diet is the most dangerous type of diet and it causes many health problems.
There are numerous fad diets that surround around restricted carbohydrates, low-fat to no-fat, or diets with gimmicks, including the Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, Calories Don’t Count, the South Beach Diet, the Rice Diet, and the Eat Right for Your Type.
Most Americans do not care enough to take a look at the nutritional values of the food that he or she is consuming. That is why America has the highest percentage of obesity in the world. This is a serious problem because one in every three adults is obese, and one in every six children is obese. There are many factors that go into the regular American diet, but most of those factors are not appealing nor is it healthy. Americans put way too much processed food into their daily diet. Some would say that other countries diets superior the American diet because of nutritional values that it carries. Other countries have proven that an active lifestyle is a huge element in the average weight of the country. There are many things that Americans could change about their diets and lifestyle that would help them to become healthier.
It’s easy to assume that poor countries usually have the most unhealthy diets. Well, that’s a misdirected assumption. High blood pressure, high blood glucose, overweight and obesity, and high cholesterol are one of the 4 of the top ten risk factors that cause death. High blood pressure is the number one cause of death around the world and heart disease is the number one cause of death globally. All of them are caused by unhealthy eating. People tend to eat less fruits and vegetables which increase the risk of diseases and health problems, causing 1.7 million deaths a year.("Global Dietary Changes Threaten Health") America, one of the richer countries, has the worst eating diets. Nearly 2 out of 5 people in America are suffering from obesity.(Richardson) In a year, each person eats approximately 1.996 pounds. That’s a lot of food.
Obesity in the United States is a major issue. Because there is such a high obesity rate, there have been so many diets established to try and reduce these constantly rising rates. A lot of these weight-loss diets that have been established are known as fad diets. A fad diet is a diet that becomes popular quickly, and may die out just as quickly. In the United States, there are some popular and healthy fad diets such as the Atkins diet, the South Beach diet, and Weight Watchers.
A sad fact in American society is that thousands of people search for the elusive dream of being thin. On any given day, one finds neighbors, friends, and relatives on some kind of diet. Dieters assume various disguises, but the noteworthy ones are the "bandwagoneer," the "promiser" and the "lethal loser."
One of the main effects of fad diets is the inability to meet the body’s nutritional requirements. In most cases, fad diets are unable to meet your body’s dietary needs as they typically designed to enable you to lose weight. This is because the diet plan is restrictive that reduces the intake of foods with essential nutrients or that requires you to eat the same foods day after day.
The healthier you start to eat on a regular basis the easier it is to pick fruits and vegetables over processed snacks and sugary goods. It takes about twenty one days to make or break a habit, so if you stick to your diet it becomes a routine to eat the right foods your body needs. Once you make this your daily routine you will start to feel better about yourself in many ways. You will have more energy, a better immune system and you will even notice yourself losing weight. It makes you feel better both physically and mentally. There are many diets out there to help you get on the right track with nutrition. The paleo diet and the volumetric food plan is just two of the many
