The World Trade Center
When the design for the World Trade Center was first envisioned, the magnificence of its structure was expected to surpass the greatest feats of Civil engineering in the world. When the Center was completed in 1973 it gained the distinction of being the world’s tallest tower. It gained the type of attention that was given to the Eiffel tower and the Empire State Building as it was too going to break records and inspire greatness by its simple but massive stature. It was to also have social, ideological, political, and economic impact on the US and the world as well as that of its engineering aspects. To America it would represent proudly the might of its capitalist society. It would also be a home of thousands of political and financial employees of the US as well as the nations that participate in trade with the US. The NY and NJ port authorities began contemplating building a World Trade Center in 1961; the same year JFK announced his intent to put a man on the moon before the end of the decade. Such lofty ideas challenged the present technological boundaries and were successful in stretching those walls ever further.
The idea was the brainchild of none other than David Rockefeller, grandchild of John D. Rockefeller, who originated Standard Oil and became the first billionaire in America. David Rockefeller’s inspiration was to rejuvenate the face of Manhattan. The Lower part of the island was the oldest area in town and had not seen any of the growth that hit the midtown and uptown areas. Prior to his work on the World Trade Center, David had done this by creating the Chase Manhattan Bank Tower. Its 60 stories were completed in 1961 in the financial district and gave a new face to the skyline over lower Manhattan.
David had begun planning and pushing for the creation of the World Trade Center near the end of the 1950’s. His brother, Nelson Rockefeller, the current governor of NY, got the Port Authority of New Jersey and New York to look into the plans for the project. They had also already begun planning for a trade facility.
Rockefeller was the co-founder of the stand Oil Company. His wealth grew and became the world’s richest man. By the early 1880s, he dominated the oil business with his Standard Oil Company, in which he accounted thirty percent of. In the overall U.S. refineries and pipelines, his company accounted for around ninety percent. John D. Rockefeller was also a major philanthropist.
On 26 February 1993 at 12:17, a yellow RYDER van detonated on level B-2 of the World Trade Center North tower. What was first believed to be a below grade transformer explosion turned into an extensive test of New York Cities Incident Command capabilities. Everyone involved had an intricate part in handling this situation. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) was able to get all support assets there promptly to assist in rescue operations. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) discovered information on the vehicle used. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) used all of the intelligence gathered to apprehend and convict those responsible. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) conducted cleanup of chemical and biological hazards that were left behind from the blast. Numerous agencies worked together to solve the first terrorist attack on American soil and clean up a disaster of epic proportions.
The Portuguese arrived in Benin, in modern Nigeria, between 1472 and 1486 to find an established and ancient kingdom with remarkable social and ritual complexity, with art that was comparatively naturalistic, and with a political system that was, on the surface, recognizable to the Europeans: monarchy. Even more importantly, they found a land rich in pepper, cloth, ivory, and slaves, and immediately set out to establish trade (Ben-Amos 35-6). Though we often imagine "first contacts" between Europeans and Africans as clashes of epochal proportions, leaving Europeans free to manipulate and coerce the flabbergasted and paralyzed Africans, this misjudges the resilience and indeed, preparedness, of the Benin people. The Benin were able to draw on their cultural, political, and religious traditions to fit the European arrival in an understandable context. Indeed, as the great brass plaques of the Benin palace demonstrate, the arrival was in fact manipulated by the Benin to strengthen, not diminish, indigenous royal power.

Rockefeller (1839-1937): As the founder of the Standard Oil Company and related subsidiaries, John D. Rockefeller became one of the world’s wealthiest men. As one of the Captains of Industry, Rockefeller was one of the primary movers of the trend to bigness for its own sake and as a competitive edge to great profits during the industrialization of America. He exemplified the evolution of character in this age, transforming from a fierce, accumulative competitor to a significant philanthropist later in life.
John D. Rockefeller was born on July 8, 1839 in Rickford, New York. He grew up in a very poor family. His father was William Avery Rockefeller. He claimed to be a doctor, who for $25 would cure various diseases. His mother was Eliza Davison Rockefeller. She was the role model who taught Rockefeller his values and morals (Poole). John Rockefeller was the second child. Altogether he had five brothers and sisters (Outman 139). As a child he was very business smart. At the young age of 12 he loaned $50 to a famer. He charged a 7% interest. When he was older he said this about the business deal, “The impression was gaining ground with me that it was a good thing to let money be my servant and not make myself a slave to money” (Poole).
...argeman said he couldn’t go all the way back there, it was every bit of two miles”(64). Chicken Little’s body wasn’t returned to Bottom until three days later, because the white people of Medallion believed that no black people lived in their community, so why should it be their responsibility and problem. This lack of caring about the fact that a child had died, regardless of the color of his skin, shows how stuck in their ways people were about segregation and hierarchy.
