The Weight Watcher’s program was founded in 1961 by Jean Nidetch, who had struggled with her weight throughout childhood and all of her adult life. She decided one day to try yet another diet ran by the New York City Board of Health in Manhattan close to where she lived. After two months she had lost 20 pounds, but she realized a very important component of the diet was missing, a support group of others to share their daily battles with their weight issues. She began writing down all the things she had learned from her meetings in Manhattan and started inviting friends over who were fighting their own battles with their weight. Soon this diet that starting out with a few lady’s in the middle of one lady’s living room would later become a world icon. In late 1961 the Weight Watcher’s Program began. By 1963, just two years Weight Watcher’s was incorporated and by 1967 Weight Watcher’s went global and became Weight Watcher’s International, Inc. including Canada, Puerto Rico, Great Brittain and Israel. Today Weight Watcher’s is one of the leading diet programs in America and operates in over 30 different countries. (Weight Watchers founder Jean Nidetch shares her start, 2010).
The Weight Watcher’s diet uses a point system with each food item having a point’s value, as long as you don’t go over your personalized point’s value total for that day, you can still enjoy all the things you love to eat, in moderation. Each member meets with a team leader who helps you get a plan personalized just for you to ensure you meet your nutritional needs, encouraging a good daily multivitamin to make sure you are still getting all the vitamins and minerals your body needs in absence of the cut back of daily calories consumed. The Nazi’s enacted a universal weight loss plan for the Jews that helped to advance their agenda with no regard to the Jews’ well-being. Supporters of an over-simplified definition of the term “weight loss plan” argue the Nazi’s achieved the simple goal of “weight loss”. Although, weight loss plans are complex agreements between a person and their diet, and the Nazi’s failed to consider this in their arrangements. The Nazi’s weight loss plan was not perfect by any means because it was short-term in nature, lacked a balanced diet, did not incorporate behavioral techniques, and was only intended for men.

Orlistat is a lipase-inhibitor drug designed to help obese individuals lose and maintain their body weight. The drug in combination with a healthy low-fat diet and exercise can help in the treatment of obesity. Reducing fat intake is critical when attempting to reduce body fat. Orlistat reduces body fat by increasing the amount of fat passed through the body. The drug has already been approved in Europe and is expected to be approved by the FDA in the US in 1999.There have been scientific studies which support the effectiveness and low risks of Orlistat. Diet and exercise should be stressed in all attempts at weight loss, yet it seems Orlistat may be a helpful addition to the weight loss program for obese patients.

The Oprah show in 1988 received its highest television ratings when Oprah Winfrey celebrated her 67-pound weight loss. She showed off how she looked in a pair of size 10 Calvin Klein jeans, reminiscing of how she fit in those same jeans 8 years earlier. She also illustrated it by wheeling a wagon full of fat on to the stage 1. Things changed dramatically in 1992, Oprah was weighing 237 pounds, the heaviest she has ever been 2. This caused her to have some strong opinions against diets: "I 've been dieting since 1977. The reason I failed is that diets don 't work. I tell people, if you 're underweight, go on a diet and you 'll gain everything you lost plus more. Now I 'm trying to find a way to live in a world with food without being controlled by it, without being a compulsive eater. That 's why I say I will never diet again 1".

For as long as we can remember, many people have been experiencing hardships and worries, with little to no income being one of the largest. In the U.S there are a few programs that can help populations facing these difficulties obtain imperitive things they need. One of these benificial programs is WIC. WIC stands for Women, Infants and Children; and is a special supplemental nutrition program that targets nutritionally at risk mothers infants and children, due to low income. The program helps aid families in the effort to provide nutritious foods, information and counseling on healthy eating, and to provide referrels to other healthcare and government benifit programs like welfare and social services. The SMART goal of the obesity program is to reduce the obese population in Pitt County by creating a healthier diet program. Different objectives will be needed in order to reach this goal. The first objective is that from July 2016 through December 2016 100 community members will participate in the health department’s health promotion activities. This objective aligns with the reinforcement construct of the Social Cognitive Theory. By repeatedly participating in the activities, the 100 community members will be rewarded with the knowledge they receive and also motivation to change their behavior. By having an enjoyable time, they will be rewarded and want to keep coming back to the activities. The second objective is that following the 6-month duration; the majority of the participants will lose 2-10% of their original body weight by changing to a healthier diet. The reason the participants need to lose 2-10% of their body weight is to either prevent or reduce the chances of gaining other health diseases associated with obesity, including coronary artery disease and Type 2 Diabetes. This objective aligns with the self-efficacy construct. By losing a little bit of body fat, the participants will believe in their ability to lose weight, and continue to do so. The third objective is that on June 17 and June 24, informational brochures will be distributed to the community members to create awareness and reminders to join the obesity program, and gain knowledge about the health condition of obesity. This objective deals with the behavioral capability construct of the Social Cognitive Theory because the participants will gain the knowledge and skills needed to change their behavior through the brochures.
A sad fact in American society is that thousands of people search for the elusive dream of being thin. On any given day, one finds neighbors, friends, and relatives on some kind of diet. Dieters assume various disguises, but the noteworthy ones are the "bandwagoneer," the "promiser" and the "lethal loser."
