The total diet market segments served by Medifast is $18 billion. Of that, Medifast has a 2% share of the customer market. In 1979, Dr. William Vitale and his son founded Jason Pharmaceuticals in his kitchen as a way to get weight loss products to doctors and their patients more easily. In the first few years of operation, Jason Pharmaceuticals steadily grew to $17 million in sales as they provided liquid diet plans to doctors for their patients (Dresser, 1993). In 1988, Oprah Winfrey lost 67 pounds on Optifast and told the world on her daytime television show (Brody, 1988). As a substitute product to Optifast, Jason Pharmaceuticals saw sales jump to $51 million the following year (Dresser, 1993). After a bout with mismanagement in the mid-nineties, causing Jason Pharmaceuticals to declare bankruptcy, the company was restructured and renamed. Since then, Medifast has become one of the fastest growing weight loss companies in the United States.
In 2013, Medifast posted $356.89 Million in revenue (Medifast, Inc., 2014) and has seen revenue growth per share climb to 22.1% over the last five years (Gurufocus, 2014). This growth is no longer associated with just doctors and their patients. In 2003, Medifast expanded their market reach beyond doctors. With the rise of baby boomers as a significant proportion of the dieting population, they crave new ways to manage their weight, allowing Weight Watchers to be successful within their target market. As obesity rates are increasing, the use of weight loss products and services are more acceptable than prior generation hesitations. New entrants should expect high barriers of entry and difficulty accessing distribution channels as it is extremely difficult for new product to enter an industry with sharp retaliation from established competitors such as weight management. The Weight Watcher’s program was founded in 1961 by Jean Nidetch, who had struggled with her weight throughout childhood and all of her adult life. She decided one day to try yet another diet ran by the New York City Board of Health in Manhattan close to where she lived. After two months she had lost 20 pounds, but she realized a very important component of the diet was missing, a support group of others to share their daily battles with their weight issues. She began writing down all the things she had learned from her meetings in Manhattan and started inviting friends over who were fighting their own battles with their weight. Soon this diet that starting out with a few lady’s in the middle of one lady’s living room would later become a world icon. In late 1961 the Weight Watcher’s Program began. By 1963, just two years Weight Watcher’s was incorporated and by 1967 Weight Watcher’s went global and became Weight Watcher’s International, Inc. including Canada, Puerto Rico, Great Brittain and Israel. According to the USDA, at the start of century 21st American people have increased their daily caloric intake by consuming five hundred calories more than in 1970. As cited by Whitney & Rolfes (2011), there are many recognized causes of obesity such as genetics, environment, culture, socioeconomic, and metabolism among others; but the cause most evident is that food intake is higher than the calories burned in physical activity. Excess of energy from food is stored in the body as fat causing an increase of weight. During the course of the last 40 years, obesity has grown enormously in the United States and the rates remain on the rise (pgs. 272-273).

2. Obesity dramatically increased in the 70’s due to a number of factors. After World War 2, lawmakers, big business and labor leaders, along with many ordinary Americans put mass consumption at the center of their plans for a successful post-war nation. The availability of frozen dinners and a variety and surplus of different foods skyrocketed. In 1977, the US dietary guidelines changed drastically, promoting our diets as mainly carbohydrate based. Over the years, the sizes of certain foods and our portions have blown up. Twenty years ago, an average bagel was 3 inches in diameter and only 140 calories. Today, the size of the average bagel has doubled, now 6 inches in diameter and over 350 calories. The health problems that stem from being overweight go way beyond the ones we usually hear about, like diabetes and heart disease. Being overweight can also affect a person's joints, breathing, sleep, mood, and energy levels. In the U.S. 68.5% of adults are overweight or obese, 34.9% falling under the obese category and 31.8% of children and adolescents are overweight or obese with 16.9% being obese (Overweight and Obesity in the U.S.). Figuratively and literarily, the obesity rate is a growing problem. The total economic cost of overweight and obese persons in the United States and Canada caused by medical costs, excess mortality and disability is approximately $300 billion per year. $80 billion of this portion is due to overweight, and approximately $220 billion is due to obesity.
