The Warriors, a film based on the book of the same name by Sol Yurick, was released in 1979. It was directed by Water Hill (The Making, 2016). This film is a cult classic about a gang that becomes stranded away from home and has to fight their way back to their home turf. This movie has held a fascination for many and it is a fact that it is loosely based on an event from Grecian times, the Battle of Cunaxa in 401 B.C. which is chronicled in Xenophon’s “The Anabasis” that follows a Grecian army who becomes stranded after the battle between Athens and Sparta (The Making, 2016). Although critically critiqued for its filming style it is a cult classic and is ranked by Entertainment weekly as number 16 in the Top 50 Cult movies. (The Top 50, 2016).

There is a brilliant use of diagonal dimensions in this scene in the railing behind the hearse, again sending a message of disorganization and anxiety. There is also the use of movement here as a gentle breeze ruffles the hair of the character, almost as a caress, and it is a stark contrast to the underlying sense of danger. The brightly colored almost cartoon-like use of the graffiti hearse and the colorful signs as dominate contrasts suggest that there is bit of hope for the characters in this film. At second 5 the scene changes to a center framed shot with the main character shot at a quarter turn. The subsidiary focus is the characters in the background who also are at a quarter turn. The shot is with a hazy lens to depict their secondary significance to the main character. The lighting used here is both high and low key with the emphasis in high key lighting on the center foreground character to draw the viewer’s eye to him. Warwick Thornton Samson and Delilah, which was released in 2009 and Henri Safran Storm Boy, released in 1976, both invite their audience to view, how both movie represent Aboriginal culture in their own way. Exploiting the dramatic component of the Aboriginal cultural class, the director acquaint the gathering of people with youthful characters that represents the Aboriginal culture for as far back as two hundred years. Samson and Delilah are two Aboriginal adolescents who battle and take a stab at living harsh condition, as the director portrayed some of the negative side of Aboriginal culture. The Magnificent Seven (1960) written by William Roberts takes the idea of seven great warriors in Aeschylus's Seven Against Thebes and creates a modern movie demonstration where these men face against immeasurable odds in order to reestablish power to the rightful leader. In both works, the previous leaders of the town are seeking men in order to fight for power of the town. In The Magnificent Seven, the town elder sends a few men from his town in order to find men to fend off the bandits that have taken control of the town by stealing their food. “It takes a warrior to fight a battle and survive. This here is a battle if I’ve ever seen one” (Beals 113). In the novel Warriors Don’t Cry, nine students from Little Rock Arkansas are set out on the battlefield for integration. Melba Pattillo and eight other friends are challenged with starting off the integration of Little Rock’s Central High School. The students were signed up and asked to attend the high school in hopes of getting rid of segregation. Although entering high school may seem as easy as signing in and going to class, the test and trials the Little Rock nine went through shows a true test of determination. Comparatively, the “Arab Spring”, a movement of protests in the Middle East, has caused controversy all over the world. Citizens are rebelling against an unfair government in hopes of create a new way of life. Tired of all the disrespect, unjust, and oppressive government Muslims and Middle Easterners have created a battle of their own. While trying to create a better life for themselves, the Little Rock Nine and those involved in the Arab Spring uprisings have stepped on to the battlefield for fair human rights.

The popular dancing movie, Footloose, was directed by Herbert Ross in 1984. Craig Brewer, produced a remake of Footloose in 2011. Both of the original Footloose and the remake, have multiple differences that split them apart. Although they follow the same theme, the sequence of events that took place happened in different orders and well as some characters were not present in the remake as they were in the original. The acting, dancing, and setting were varied slightly but it followed the same trend as the original. Directors Herbert Ross and Craig Brewer, directed the same film, while Craig Brewer made the film more modern, while keeping the film following the same trend.

ONCE WERE WARRIORS JOURNEY SCRIPT JAI BARRETT Good afternoon all, Jai here again with the First Friday Film Club and today we are talking quintessential journey films. In past weeks we have explored and reviewed popular movies such as The Wolf of Wall Street and The Hunger Games. Today we are going to be discussing on old classic, Once Were Warriors (1994) which in my opinion fits the description of a quintessential journey perfectly due to its extremely emotive and relatable plot involving many intense emotional journeys. In today’s show I will be investigating and responding to reviews given on the movie at the conclusion of last week’s show and giving my own personal opinion as to why the movie Once Were Warriors is indeed a quintessential journey film.
The movie Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy is based in the 1970s. It depicts the highly male dominated broadcast team and shows the shake up when a woman is hired as a reporter and has aspirations of becoming an anchor the television station. The particular scene shows Ron Burgundy is flustered because Veronica Coringstone is impeding on his masculinity. Burgundy exemplifies hegemonic masculinity by explaining he is a man and a professional, when Coringstone says he his acting like a baby he takes offense and explains he is a man and he his ultimately better than a women because indeed he is a man. Burgundy states, “'I’m a man who discovered the wheel, and built the Eiffel Tower out of metal and brawn. That's what kind of man I am. You're just a woman with a small brain. With a brain a 1/3 the size of us...It's science (Robertson, McKay, 2004). The clip also depicts Burgundy’s desire for Coringstone to be the typical submissive female he is used to. The articles will identify the gender stereotypes and access if they are true or false based on the research.
“The Mission” is based on a true story that occurred around the borderlands of Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil in the years 1750’s according to the film and history. The Treaty of Madrid of 1750 with the Spanish and Portuguese caused both havoc and death for the people of the Guarini and the members of the Jesuits. The Jesuits, members of the church, tried to bring Christianity and civilization to the natives while keeping at peace with Spain and Portugal. The Jesuits were the teachers for the natives; Teaching them not only the Christian religion but also civilization. The movie I decided to analyze for this course was American History X (1998), which stars Edward Norton. Though this movie isn’t widely known, it is one of the more interesting movies I have seen. It’s probably one of the best films that depict the Neo Nazi plague on American culture. The film takes place from the mid to late 1990’s during the Internet boom, and touches on subjects from affirmative action to Rodney King. One of the highlights of this movie that really relates to one of the key aspects of this course is the deterrence of capital punishment. Edward Norton’s portrayal as the grief stricken older brother who turns to racist ideologies and violence to cope with his fathers death, completely disregards the consequences of his actions as he brutally murders someone in front of his family for trying to steal his car. The unstable mentality that he developed after his father’s death really goes hand-to-hand specifically with Isaac Ehrlich’s study of capital punishment and deterrence. Although this movie is entirely fictional, a lot of the central themes (racism, crime punishment, gang pervasiveness, and one’s own vulnerability) are accurate representations of the very problems that essentially afflict us as a society.

Here, the editing is used to create a dynamic perception of the events. In this way Kubrick is able to bring in the spectators’ minds the chaotic reality of the war. Moreover, colors become another tool to communicate to the audience this sort of split within the film. In fact, after Pyle’s death the viewer can notice how those metallic and cold colors, that are present at the beginning of the film, shift into wormer colors. Divided We Fall is one of such movies; it evokes certain feelings and emotions and makes viewers think about very important and valuable things of the human being. Since the main topics of the movie are war, loyalty, friendship, forgiveness, and help, one can state that Divided We Fall is very deep in its sense and shows some vivid situations of human life.
