The Cold War

Introduction

The Cold War was a fight between communism and capitalism. The war lasted from 1947-1991. The war was called the Cold War because it wasn’t one war with fighting. Instead, it was a series of regional proxy wars. The two main powers in the Cold War where the United States and U.S.S.R (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics). The U.S. believed in capitalism while the Soviets believed in communism. They both supported opposite sides in each proxy war. They had a conflict that lasted for many years and was a very scary time for many people.

The Opening

The beginning of the Cold War was very heated and it laid a base for the years to come. The first major event was the Berlin Blockade. This was when the Soviets blockaded
The first major event in the Detente was the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan or the Soviet-Afghan war. It was from 1979-1989. The reason the Soviets invaded Afghanistan was that they wanted to help the communist regime in Kabul. The U.S. supported the opposing forces known as the mujahadeen. The C.I.A supplied them with munitions and supplies to fight the Soviets. This is now considered a bad idea because the mujahadeen later turned into the Taliban which turned into the terrorist group Al-Qaeda. The war ended when the Soviets withdrew from Afghanistan. The next major event was the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989. This left the East Germans free to visit West Berlin. This united many broken families. Soon after the Berlin Wall fell the communist governments in Czechoslovakia, Rumania and Bulgaria fell. This was because the Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev put into place Glasnost and Perestroika which allowed the Soviet people more freedom to do things such as read Western newspapers and magazines. This made them realize the capitalism was much better than communism. This made many revolts happen which threw out many of the communist regimes in Eastern Europe. Soon the Soviet Union was dissolved on December 26, 1991. This ended the Cold War because the Soviet Union was no longer a country.
