Technology has changed the way we perform in today’s workplace. Technology in the 21st century has made a great impact on the business office. The most evident of that change was the introduction of cellular phones and computers. The cellular phone is a very important tool in today’s workplace. Workers cannot only do work on company time, but a lot of work is being done outside of the office during personal time. Just about all cellular phones have internet capabilities. With that capability, workers are able to check emails and keep their work updated.
Of the two, computers is probably the most important when it comes to changes in the workplace. The invention of computers has changed the way companies are being ran all over the country. Computers can be used in many different ways. From use by the human resource department, the accounting department, and even the managerial department. Individuals apply for jobs now by filling out an application online that is sent directly to the human resource department. The accounting department handle all the accounts receivable and accounts payable transactions online. As stated by Soylu, “executives, particularly, may use the Internet and management information systems for resources relating to their financial and HR capital needs” (Soylu 2012). Technology has changed the way we think and the way we work. Everything you need is at touch of a finger.

Working in today’s society has changed in the last few decades. The economy and technology are the main reasons for this change. The type of job and environment where one works has also changed. The fact that many people work from home via the internet has drastically changed the workforce and the environment surrounding it. With this change comes new demands, expectations, and opportunities for employers.
Since the beginning of time the advancement of technology has been changing the requirements in order to be able to do certain jobs. The first example of which, is the big, strong caveman that hunted for food with a club, who was replaced by the small, sneaky one that hunted with a bow. This example is analogous to the assistant that hand writes documents for his boss, being replaced by one that can type documents much faster and more easily. Many people have thought about or have even debated if the evolution of technology in the workplace has negatively effected the working class. These thoughts and debates have spurred dozens of other controversial topics, but one specifically is whether the number of digital jobs created outweighs the number of jobs lost. Though the development of technology has exponentially increased productivity and efficiency, many people believe that it has taken away more jobs from the working class than we can afford to lose, because of data sharing, data processing, and robotic replacement of workers. However, for those same reasons I believe that there will be an equal or greater number of computer jobs to replace them.
Also, technology has been a major factor for the addition of Autonomy in the workplace in the past ten years. Video calling services through companies like skype, have allowed employees to be free from the confines of the office space (TR). Technology has given employees the option to work from anywhere they feel the most comfortable. Moreover, technology has also brought lower cost to companies, because they no longer have to fly employees to distant locations for meetings. These information systems can be minimized and fixed into mobile devices such as smartphones. The use of smartphones can play an important role in supporting business processes and operations, developing strategies for competitive advantage and decision making. These smartphones allow employees to be linked to the office, its data and resources, without being in the office. The use of smartphones for business processes can make the business more efficient and effective. They make it easier for co-workers to communicate among themselves and facilitates better communication between the business and its employees, customers, suppliers and even other businesses, and makes it possible in real-time. While technological innovations can provide increased opportunities for organizations and give them a competitive advantage, not all employees respond well to changes in their everyday workflow. When an organization updates its systems, it can face some resistance from employees, especially when the employees do not feel properly trained and lack the confidence in using the new system. Employees may grow frustrated and become less productive and efficient. In some extreme cases, technology can also replace some of their duties and make their positions obsolete, leaving them out of a job. This ties back to the need for job security. Technology has come a long way in the past 50 years and the types of challenges just mentioned are a lot more common in this day and age than they were before. Businesses can share information nation or even world wide in a matter of seconds. For example, a word document file can be sent from an office in New York to an office in Los Angeles in under a minute, in the past this same information would have taken a week to be sent through the mail. Computers have changed the way that factories are run too. On an assembly line, before computers every job, no matter how easy or difficult, had to be done by an employee. Now, however, computers run machines and do most of these tasks.
