Why Does Productivity Matter?

According to the National Bureau of Economic Research, “productivity is one of the most closely watched indicators of long-term economic prospects. Rising productivity is the key to making possible permanent increases in the standard of living.” (National Bureau of Economic Research, 2014). Why is it so important to look at productivity, and not just income, or profits, or quality of life? Productivity is crucial because it shows how much a worker can contribute in the workforce, and this influences nearly all other economic factors: high productivity means higher profits, higher income for workers, higher quality of life, better long-term job prospects, etc.

How Has Technology Changed Productivity in the USA?

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics for the USA, the largest productivity growth times happened from 1990-2007, during the advent of the personal computer and internet, which completely changed the workforce. This meant much more work done on computers, less paperwork, electronic filing systems, less waste, more organized ways to access information, and increased automation overall. This both changed lives for workers and companies overall: employees could be much more productive by using the internet and computing devices to do their work, and companies could shift many things online, like placing orders, hiring people, filling out paperwork, etc. Employees also have constant, secure access to important information that they may need through the internet, which means that even outside of business hours, workers can educate themselves and stay up-to-date on important topics for their industry.
