Have you ever thought what actually influences our perception of stimuli we encounter on a daily basis? The topic of this paper is perception. Many times, the way we take in information from the world, is entirely up us as an individual but most times perception is influenced by external factors, which cannot be controlled. Perception is an opinion held by individuals regarding how things seem in the real world. The area regarding perception interests me greatly because I feel it is very interesting how different individuals have different ways to perceive the same exact information. Perception is the process in which we learn about the world around us. Specifically, I want to learn what mechanisms truly influence perception and how those affect our daily lives. Our perceptions of the world are based on information we ignore, the information choose to attend and how the information is presented to us. The perception of the individual makes the final decision, to which information is important and which are not. Their perception becomes their reality from which their behaviors come from. They behave on these realities regardless if they are right or not. Behaviors of human beings are derived from the perceived world rather than the realistic world. Misinterpretations of perception often lead to many conflicts that come between an individual’s happiness or their environment. Perceptions often lead to stereotyping/bullying in the world. For an example, recently many individuals perceive people from different religions than their own, to be terrorists. One of the most common American proverbs is the expression to “never judge a book by its cover”. This saying, used for more than just books, is commonly used to express that what is on the appearance of something might not always show that things true nature or content. Even so people will often forget this fact and rely on their own perception. So what does this say about perception? To Victor Hugo author of the novel Les Misérables this would probable show that human perception is flawed and that people trust it more than they should. Gestalt psychology was founded by German thinkers Max Wertheimer, Wolfgang Kohler and Kurt Koffka. They mainly focused on how people interpret the world around them. The Gestalt perspective formed partially as a response to the structuralism of Wilhelm Wundt, who focused on breaking down mental events and experiences to the smallest elements. Structuralists had failed in explaining the concept of ‘apparent motion’ and ‘illusory contours’.
Worldviews and the human condition are intertwined. Worldviews are inherited and developmental, they can be influenced and change overtime. An individual’s culture, religion and society influence their worldview. Worldviews are significant to the human condition because they are the structure of beliefs, values and assumptions regarding the way the world operates. A worldview also makes an individual challenge their beliefs and views of reality. Worldviews make people question where they come from and the meaning of life. Perception is the process of understanding what information your senses are receiving in order to gain knowledge on what you are witnessing/seeing. The following quote explains more technically, what perception is; “Perception is the process by which you become aware of objects, events, and especially people through your senses: sight, smell, taste, touch, and sound.” (DeVito, J.A., 2015). Some of the ways in which perception is encountered is through the ‘process of perception’, Asch’s ‘configural model and ‘perceptual accentuation’. A popular subject within psychology is that of selective attention, particularly visual, auditory or visual and auditory attention (Driver, 2001). There are many theories of visual and auditory attention that provide us with a greater understanding of the ways in which humans attend to different stimuli (Driver, 2001), such as Broadbent’s (1958) filter theory of attention for example. This essay will compare and contrast theories of visual and auditory attention as well as discussing how well these theories explain how we attend to objects. The essay will consist of three auditory attention theories of Broadbent’s filter theory, Treisman’s (1964) attenuation theory, and Deutsch and Deutsch’s (1963) late selection model of attention; and two models of visual attention known as the spotlight model, such as Treisman and Gelade’s (1980) feature integration model, and the zoom-lens model of visual attention (see Styles, 2006).
When we only look through our own perception we are more likely to be more ignorant of facts and ideas that go against what they believe is true. When you look through your perception it creates your own reality but it forces actual reality to take a back seat to the one that you have created. Perception makes society more ignorant of our fellow man because we are willing to ignore people and their opinion because it contradicts what we believe is reality even though it may not be reality.

The movie “Inside Out” is a perfect example of how perception affects our communication; it shows exactly how the process of selection, organization, and interpretation correlated to each other.
Perception as the Source and Basis of Knowledge It is human nature to desire to acquire knowledge, but how we acquire this knowledge is a constant debate between philosophers. For years philosophers have written about different sources of knowledge. We can divide these ideas into two theories, rationalism and empiricism. Sensation refers to the process of sensing what is around us in our environment by using our five senses, which are touching, smell, taste, sound and sight. Sensation occurs when one or more of the various sense organs received a stimulus. By receiving the stimulus, it will cause a mental or physical response. It starts in the sensory receptor, which are specialized cells that convert the stimulus to an electric impulse which makes it ready for the brain to use this information and this is the passive process. After this process, the perception comes into play of the active process. Perception is the process that selects the information, organize it and interpret that information.
The way people decide to see the world will affect where they go, and how they will make decisions. A good example of this is: someone who sees the world as a wonderful place will most likely want to travel, and experience life, but someone who sees the world as a scary place will most likely stay in the house.
