The United Republic Of Tanzania

Kinyasi Monyi, RIT Deaf graduate student, came from the small island of Zanzibar that merged the United Republic of Tanzania in the East Africa. He was born on June 30, 1986, from a military hospital and raised as the only deaf person in family. He was born as hearing but later became deaf at age six when a doctor found out he has spinal meningitis. Now, he is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Computing Security from B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). During the interview, he recalled that his life struggled as a student in Tanzania, and how did he deal with the challenges included the family support into who he became today. There are also major differences in between the United States and Tanzania. He was raised in upper-middle class family with three sisters and two brothers. He was fortunate enough that his family was able to provide him food, clothes, and formal education. Many people he knew that they were poor and did not have enough support from outside of the area where he lived. Unfortunately, high levels of poverty existed in Tanzania because it is part of the third world countries. All else aside, his parents did not notice that he was being deaf until one day they decided to call his name and noticed he was not being called. They called his name twice and there was no response from him. As they panicked, they took him to a hospital and have a doctor checked him out. After checking him out, the doctor told his family that he was deaf in both ears. Unable to find a solution, they let him stay at home for a year and half without school. Monica, a Dutch lady, heard about Kinyasi’s situation from one of family’s friends. She took him to ... ... middle of paper ... ..., he was never told to sit upright, only his comfort zone whatever he can sit. As the future stores in Kinyasi’s plans, he graduates with Bachelor of Science in Computing Security this May recently. He continues his goal to receive the Master of Science and will graduate in the next May. After graduation, he plans to look for a job across the United States as he loves to travel around the new places. He wants to gain more experience through work for next few more years. When he satisfies his goal, he will return to Tanzania, to set up a business and use his skills to improve security. There are not many security companies and he wants to improve the security to prevent hack, threats, and virus risks. If the security plan does not work out, he plans to do entrepreneurship for farming (how to improve crop demands) or build better properties provided for deaf people.
