The Tortilla Curtain Awarded the French Prize for best foreign novel, The Tortilla Curtain by T.C. Boyle follows the lives of illegal immigrants after entering the United States and the struggles they face in their everyday lives. The Tortilla Curtain, although a fiction book, discusses politically charged issues such as illegal immigration, racism, and poverty. Racism and the Mexican culture are two main thematic topics in this piece of literature. As the debate over immigration continues to escalate across the nation, T.C. Boyle has many questions directed towards him from his readers. More specifically, what his views on immigration are. And Boyle has questions of his own. Since it was written during a time of politically charged climate, people easily could have mistook this for a political commentary that it was not. People may have expected Boyle, an award-winning author, to be able to create a solution for the issues he was so apparently familiar with. On the other hand, another reason there may be backlash is because of Boyle’s nationality as an American. People may be skeptical that a man from New York should be writing on the issue in the first place, and are furthered frustrated when he does not provide a proper solution either. A final reason that there is backlash could stem from raw human emotion. An emotion provoking novel, The Tortilla Curtain could have angered readers as they find no happy ending for the serious problems created. Readers may have felt that the story provided in the novel was left unfinished. This is also the case with many issues today, a constant battle left unresolved. This is why although one can understand where backlash might be coming from, the expectation for Boyle to provide a solution in his book for a much greater issue is
In a story of identity and empowerment, Juan Felipe Herrera’s poem “Borderbus” revolves around two Honduran women grappling with their fate regarding a detention center in the United States after crawling up the spine of Mexico from Honduras. While one grapples with their survival, fixated on the notion that their identities are the ultimate determinant for their future, the other remains fixated on maintaining their humanity by insisting instead of coming from nothingness they are everything. Herrera’s poem consists entirely of the dialogue between the two women, utilizing diction and imagery to emphasize one’s sense of isolation and empowerment in the face of adversity and what it takes to survive in America.

In both the movie, La Misma Luna, and the newspaper series, Enrique’s Journey, migrants are faced with many issues. The most deadly and scarring issues all relate back to bandits, judicial police, and la migra or Mexican immigration officers. The problems that arise are serious to the point of rape, robbing, and beating. It is not easy crossing the border illegally and secretly, but the successful ones have an interesting or even traumatic story about how it worked for them.
Conflict between the main characters in fictional stories can be so thick, you need a razor-sharp knife to cut it; that is definitely the case in the two literary texts I recently analyzed titled “Confetti Girl” by Diana Lopez and “Tortilla Sun” by Jennifer Cervantes. In the first text, tensions mount when a social butterfly of a teenage girl and her oblivious father lock horns over the subject of homework. In the second passage, drama runs high when a lonely child and her career-driven mother battle over the concept of spending the summer apart. Both authors take the reader within the very small, limiting, and confusing world of migrants, a world defined by an overall physical and emotional segregation. But their separation from Anglos is counterbalanced by their intimacy with their family and community. In both book and article, the families wash, eat, sleep, and work together; in fact they work tremendously hard. Also, the characters value education, although this theme is better developed by Rivera, since his narrative spans a full year, while Bacon is limited only his experience he remembers throughout his interview. In particular, Rivera's historia "It's That It Hurts" presents the complex dilemma faced by migrant children entering racist school systems while carrying the high hopes of their family that schooling will be the children's ticket out of the fields.

Jose Antonio Vargas’s article on My Life as an Undocumented Immigrant is a writing about his childhood journey from the Philippines to the United States as an Undocumented Immigrant. Vargas writes this article to emphasize the topic of immigrant and undocumented immigrant in the United States. He uses all three appeals: pathos, ethos, and logic in his writing, in specific, he mostly uses pathos throughout of his entire article with a purpose for the reader to sympathize and to feel compassion for him. In T.C. Boyle’s The Tortilla Curtain, it should be easily noted that each wall comes with a much deeper, metaphorical meaning. The literal and figurative boundaries in the story appear as symbols for what keep the characters in their own “worlds.” These boundaries symbolize the fear of outside forces which each character struggles to keep away from what they cherish the most. Although the boundaries in the story can both be real and imagined, each one of them can allude back to the main issue of the Mexican-American border.

In “The Border Patrol State” Leslie Silko makes accusations of the border patrol’s mistreatment of American citizens of Mexican decent, making the argument with almost evidence. Silko, a critically acclaimed poet, sees the border patrol as a governmental assembly addicted to interrogation, torture, and the murder of those they see fit.
The eternal endeavor of obtaining a realistic sense of selfhood is depicted for all struggling women of color in Gloria Anzaldua’s “Borderlands/La Frontera” (1987). Anzaldua illustrates the oppressing realities of her world – one that sets limitations for the minority. Albeit the obvious restraints against the white majority (the physical borderland between the U.S. and Mexico), there is a constant and overwhelming emotional battle against the psychological “borderlands” instilled in Anzaldua as she desperately seeks recognition as an openly queer Mestiza woman. With being a Mestiza comes a lot of cultural stereotypes that more than often try to define ones’ role in the world – especially if you are those whom have privilege above the “others”.
The struggle to find a place inside an un-welcoming America has forced the Latino to recreate one. The Latino feels out of place, torn from the womb inside of America's reality because she would rather use it than know it (Paz 226-227). In response, the Mexican women planted the seeds of home inside the corral*. These tended and potted plants became her burrow of solace and place of acceptance. In the comfort of the suns slices and underneath the orange scents, the women were free. Still the questions pounded in the rhythm of street side whispers. The outside stare thundered in pulses, you are different it said. Instead of listening she tried to instill within her children the pride of language, song, and culture. Her roots weave soul into the stubborn soil and strength grew with each blossom of the fig tree (Goldsmith).
