Introduction Leadership, managers, and power all have a vital role in organizational management. Utilizing these three concepts can assist business with the proper utilization of organizational management as well as the success of the company. This discussion board will focus on the three concepts of leadership, importance of managers, and power, as well as the biblical aspects of each, and how they are important to the success of a business.
Three Most Important Concepts
Leadership
Leadership can be described as the ability to influence others (Saterlee, 2013). Good managers do not necessarily make good leaders. In fact, not every leader is necessarily a manager. Utilizing a cliché sports reference one can show an example of a good leader.

In an essence they are the providers for a business. The bible tells us as much in 1 Timothy, But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever (1 Timothy 5:8, ESV). Managers are important to any organization as there is always a need for someone to help employees react to changes (Foss & Klein, 2014). In addition without managers employees would be left alone to meet organizational goals through their individual efforts (Saterlee, 2013). This is important because companies need managers who are qualified, have the proper motivation, are able to make quick decisions, are decisive, and are highly trained in the area of which they are managing. Having knowledge within a managerial area is paramount in managing and this information is needed to make decisions. While the managers knowledge doesn’t have to be perfect it needs to be good enough as if the decision maker would make the same choice even if they had access to additional information (Foss & Klein, 2014). The bible again tells us the same in 1 Timothy where Paul highlights the importance of a qualified manager, if anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church? I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” (Luke 10: 17-20, NIV). Power can be utilized in many different ways. In Luke Jesus sends the seventy-two out who overcame the power of the enemy to then have power over them. However; Jesus cautioned them in the end asking that they not rejoice in that power. Power can be a great tool to utilize in management if utilized properly and not for negative reasons.
Power when acquired is meant to be used to achieve some purpose(s). Appropriate use of power leads to the achievement of desired goals and objectives. Ineffective use of power or failure to use power when the need arises has been described as the major cause of defective functioning of a system (Omisore & Nweke,
Power has been defined as the psychological relations over another to get them to do what you want them to do. We are exposed to forms of power from the time of birth. Our parents exercise power over us to behave in a way they deem appropriate. In school, teachers use their power to help us learn. When we enter the work world the power of our boss motivates us to perform and desire to move up the corporate ladder so that we too can intimidate someone with power one day. In Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness Kurtz had a power over the jungle and its people that was inexplicable.
Power allows people to do anything they want. They can use it in different ways, they can tell people to obey them, they can use it to hurt someone they hate, and even rob. They can also use it in a positive way, they can help people and do a lot of good things with it.
Power is something we have set up as a society to fill our own needs and pleasure and we must change the way we interpret power. Power is not something to be abused. It is not something that should give us satisfaction.
McShane and Von Glinow define Power as “the capacity of a person, team, or organization to influence others” (300). Furthermore, they state that power derives from five main sources and four main contingencies like the following figure illustrates.
A leader is described as a person who guides others and has authority and influence over others. They work to influence others into meeting certain goals. There is no right or wrong definition of a leader and there is no recipe that ensures effective leadership. Successful leaders have a good balance of vision, influence, and power. Leaders gain their authority from their ability to influence others to get the work done; because of this, anyone has the potential to be a leader. (Finkelman. 2012, p15)
Power is authority and strength, which is any form of motive force or energy, ability to act, or control. When too much power is given, a dictatorship government can form, in which all decisions are made by one authority. In the book Animal Farm, by George Orwell the author portrays how “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely” (Lord Acton).
The term power has a variety of definitions. According to the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, the first definition of power refers to “the ability or capacity to act or do something effectively”, also include “a capacity, faculty, or aptitude,” (“power. (n.d.)
For many years, I have been told by teachers, family, and friends that I am a good leader. Until fairly recently, I had never truly thought about what it means to be a good leader and just took it as a compliment. Leadership is an intangible concept which cannot be properly outlined in a dictionary, but one which must be formed and explained only through one’s own philosophies and experiences.
According to the paper presented, I believe that power is the most essential element for the human progress, since it’s about changing intentions to actions. In organization it’s about sharing information, about working together and running the company in the best interest of everyone. According to my learning, I believed that it changes nothing, no one can predict the result of a decision and we spend more time living with the consequence of our decision than making them. In turn we should focus on getting things done rather than thinking of the consequence.
Power can be defined as an authority over something or someone in order to get a task done. Power is described and seen in homes, school, place of work, community and in relationship with significant. In my life, power has worked in two different ways whereby it has formed a bias between wanting something and achieving something. However, power created a conflict for me due to the struggle behind my goals. The challenges I believe with too much power is where I have a few goals that is being set by the people around me, which there are plenty expectations on which I have to meet in order to gain a reward.
Power is defined in the course study notes as the “ability of individuals or groups to get what they want despite the opposition”. Power is derived from a variety of sources including knowledge, experience and environmental uncertainties (Denhardt et al, 2001). It is also important to recognize that power is specific to each situation. Individuals or groups that may be entirely powerful in one situation may find themselves with little or no power in another. The county Registrar of Voters, who is my boss, is a perfect example. In running the local elections office, she can exercise the ultimate power. However, in a situation where she attempted to get the county selected for a desirable, statewide pilot project, she was powerless, completely at the mercy of the Secretary of State. Power is difficult to measure and even to recognize, yet it plays a major role in explaining authority. In organizations, power is most likely exercised in situations where “the stakes are high, resources are limited, and goals and processes are unclear” (Denhardt et al, 2001). The absence of power in organizations forces us to rely on soley hierarchical authority.
Leadership is trait that is extremely important in any society. Leadership is known as the way people attempting to make a difference in a situation. However, I believe that it is better said to be a way of influencing others actions. Leadership is usually connected to a great leader that affected his or her followers in a dynamic way. Throughout the semester for my leadership class, I have expanded the knowledge in numerous ways. I now have fully understanding of the purpose and process of leadership to a society. Being a leader one must maintain an image of being the role model. I believe that this is leader should be who is someone who has the ability to influence, encourage, listen, and nurture. They are able to inspire, stimulate, persuade, shape, and have an effect on others.
Power is the ability to make people say and/or do things. It is the ability to get whatever you want. Power is necessary in any society, otherwise all would break loose; leaders must be established. When taken to an extreme, power is not good. As Lord Acton said, "Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely." An example of this is Adolph Hitler from Germany. He thought that he could not be stopped and that rules did not apply to him. By being given absolute power, he altered the government. No one attempted to stop this in the German country, because of his con...
Power; “The ability to do something or act in a particular way, especially as faculty or quality.” and “The capacity or ability to direct or influence the behavior of others or the course of events. ” Power is a concept that appears in daily life. Since power allows oneself to control something, it is very hard to let go of that entitlement, leading others to feel victimization.
Power is the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behavior of others, or the course of events. Somehow it became something that people have fought for, ever since human existent. Naturally, our sense of competition and greed causes us to want more and more of it. The question of whether or not a person should have too much power, became controversial. Some people believe that it’s no big deal, and is completely necessary.
