Cara Murray Film Review “The Third Man”, 1949 While traveling abroad in Europe, I took the opportunity one evening to watch “The Third Man”, the most famous classic British noir from 1949. The film was directed by Carol Reed and starred Joseph Cotton as Holly Martins, Orson Welles as Harry Lime, and Alida Valli as femme fatale Anna Schmidt. Set in Vienna after WWII, the city is divided into zones controlled by the occupying forces when Holly Martins arrives from the US to take a job with a good friend from his school days, Harry Lime. After being in the city for what appeared to the viewer as less than 3 minutes, he was informed that his friend had been the victim of a car accident out in front of his own home and had died. From the first note of the theme song during the opening credits, the viewer encounters the sounds of a zither, similar to a guitar. Anton Karas, the composer of the entirely zither soundtrack, was at the time an unknown artist. Reed heard him playing at a wine bar and got him to agree to compose the score. The music was often eerie or haunting, fitting with the anticipation of a noir and post-war Vienna, but it honestly gave life to the film, which sometimes felt flat. With the inundation of crime and thriller films being produced today, the viewer doesn’t feel the type of “edge of your seat” suspense that many modern day films are able to produce. As for the cinematography, many of the scenes of the film were shot at awkward angles. It was as if the camera wasn’t set up straight, but too much of an angle that it had to have been intentional. The black and white expressionist cinematography by Robert Krasker has been hailed as a critical aspect of the films’ style. At times it added to the drama of a scene, however, at other points it became overly distracting. The sound used in this scene are all diegetic, the sounds of gunfire and explosions show that the characters in this scene are in very real danger of being shot or blown up, this helps the viewer develop a more personal connection with the characters since the scene is towards the end of the film, the viewer has developed a personal connection with the characters and do not want them to die. The diegetic sounds of military personnel can be heard, this is used to show the urgency that the military personnel have to get The Sapphires and Dave out of the dangerous situation. This scene is used to emphasise the danger that Dave and The Sapphires are in very real and very lethal danger, the mixture of sinister camera angles to emphasise the visual danger that the characters are in to the inhospitable sounds portrayed by the scene to highlight the explosive danger that the characters are in. The lighting used features the darkness and the difficulty to see due to the night sky.

The film starts out with orchestral music, and shows James Dean's character, Jim, drunk on the ground of a sidewalk. The sound of a police siren is heard and used as a transition into the next scene that takes place, understandably, in a police station. While in the police station, Jim is yelling along with the sound of the siren, and humming loudly to give the impression that he is drunk. At one point in the scene he is brought into another room with an officer, and begins to punch a desk. The sound effects are loud, and the he pauses, and music begins again when he begins to hurt. Again, a siren is played at the transition to the next scene. However, for the most part, score music is played during all transitions.

For this essay I will be looking at the work of Hans Zimmer to discuss how music in film engages the viewer and evokes emotion and pulls the viewer toward the film. Hans Zimmer is a German born music composer. Hans Zimmer’s love of music stems from his childhood when he learned how to play various instruments. Before Zimmer began composing music for films he was in a well-known band. The band was called The Buggles whom were famous for their song Video Killed the Radio Star. After the Buggles Zimmer played in other bands but never had another hit. As Zimmer has progressed as a film composer so has his list of nominations and awards. Zimmer has won 4 Grammy Awards and 2 Golden Globes and many more for his outstanding film scores. The reason I chose to write this essay on Zimmer was that his genres and music score are extremely versatile ranging from animations to comedy to dark thrillers. This is important to highlight as it shows Zimmer can create almost any atmosphere with his music whether it be sad or creating tension that all cause us to engage with the film. Zimmer's use of themes and introduction of different instruments allowed him to create these wonderful engaging film score. In this essay I will look at three films by Hans Zimmer these are The Holiday Rush and Rain Man.
The film begins with a title card sequence upon a static backdrop of shrubbery, mountains and distant clouds; a lingering sight that doesn’t truthfully establish forthcoming events in Vienna’s saloon. Her saloon may be quiet, but it is always occupied, and whilst the opening sequence, in which we are introduced to Johnny Guitar, is filled with a bravado of horns and orchestral accompaniment, the saloon itself is inversely populated by the sound of wind, tumbleweed, and stark silences - something perhaps more associated with the western expanse in which the story takes place. Although admittedly some scenes have a comical side to them, Besson's fast paced action and gruesome images hold the tension and suspense brilliantly. His use of close-ups and camera movements, especially the subjective stance used by the victim, convey the feelings felt by the characters and the way in which they behave. Sound plays a crucial role in the opening sequence because, in my view, it is used to control the level of suspense and intrigue.
