The film, The Sapphires, (2012), directed by Wayne Blair depicts the story of four Australian Aboriginal women who travel to Vietnam as a singing quartet to entertain the troops during the war in 1968. The scene being analyzed in this text is the scene where The Sapphires are airlifted to safety following a bombing attack deployed on the place where The Sapphires were performing. In the heat of the moments two of the girls are split up and forgotten, Dave Lovelace leaves the rest of The Sapphires to recover the lost girls, as Dave frantically searches for the missing Sapphires, he is shot in the chest. This scene is filled with many emotional and intense camera angles, sounds and lighting.

The sound used in this scene are all diegetic, the sounds of gunfire and explosions show that the characters in this scene are in very real danger of being shot or blown up, this helps the viewer grow a more personal connection with the characters since the scene is towards the end of the film, the viewer has developed a personal connection with the characters and do not want them to die. The diegetic sounds of military personnel can be heard, this is used to show the urgency that the military personnel have to get The Sapphires and Dave out of the dangerous situation.
This scene is used to emphasise the danger that Dave and The Sapphires are in very real and very lethal danger, the mixture of sinister camera angles to emphasise the visual danger that the characters are in to the inhospitable sounds portrayed by the scene to highlight the explosive danger that the characters are in. The sound effects grabbed my attention and continued to make me yearn for what could come next. The sounds bring me to a place where I can’t help but believe in the situation that’s happening. The music heightens my mood and helps create illusion. For example, the first extraordinary sound technique I noticed that the filmmaker used was the echo effect. It was not only used to support the mood the characters were at, but also to express that idea of the ‘emptiness’ in them. This technique dominated the audio when I was taken to a story in the film of a boy who was 18 and poisoned by his own sister. As I mentioned earlier, the clutter in the Gunderson’s home does speak volumes about who they are as people. Well very proud and honest people, they are very flawed and blue collar. This clutter is continued on in the kitchen. The shelf behind the kitchen table is filled with pictures and other nick-nacks. This clutter is eerily reminiscent of the middle class household portrayed by the MacGuff’s in the film Juno. These families both are not going to make sure everything in their home is pristine, but their way of life is really not too uncommon. It really does embody a lot of blue collar America. Another good use of mise en scene in this sequence was the very gray and desolate skyline during the murder investigation. Murder obviously is not a light topic, so the dark atmosphere in the sky very much fits into the theme of this scene. The last thing I’d like to mention about mise en scene and staging takes me back to the opening zoom of this sequence. Along with the visual theatrics zoom, the sudden appearance of nondiegetic music also insinuates this is quite an important scene in the film. Once we hear the dramatic strings, we know something dramatic is about to happen, especially because the music is clearly not coming from something on the screen. As a younger viewer it also enables me to empathise with the students being a similar age to the victims of the massacre. The severity of the situation is also felt through the use of sound as the audience can hear the trembling and distraught tones from the emergency calls. Archival sound footage further strengthens the authenticity of the crisis. As the distressed voices are heard as a voice-over, paired with the solemn sound of the acoustic guitar, the camera techniques further complements the disaster.

First of all, the audio is used brilliantly in the sequence. Sound is one of the most powerful tools in cinema. Sound cues us to form expectation and opens up the possibility for the editing. In the beginning of the sequence we see the indigenous people dancing and Willard resting on the boat. However, he is getting ready to complete his mission. When his voice-over comes into play, the audience starts to realize that Willard is becoming insane just like Kurtz, he is becoming part of the jungle and so is the audience. The scene cuts to Willard rising slowly from the water, accompanied by the song “The End” by The Doors. The tribal beat and the song mix together, intensifying the suspense. The odd thing is that the tribal beat is a diegetic sound and the song is a non-diegetic sound. Almost every scene that occurs in Jasper’s house is diegetic. All the music heard comes from a stereo, and every character can hear it. This adds to the realisticness of the film since it represents real parts of the Jasper’s everyday life. One specific soundtrack played more than once that holds significance is this loud screaming sound. Towards the beginning of the movie, Theo and Jasper are sitting on Jasper’s couches when Theo mentions the ringing in his hears again. Jasper tells Theo that some zen music should help, but as a joke, he plays loud, screeching music. What seemed at first to be funny actually foreshadowed a scene further into the film. This type of sound is heard again after Theo brings Kee to temporary safety at Jasper’s. In the early morning when the Fishers break into Jasper’s house the alarm and the same screaming music heard earlier started to sound. This diegetic sound and precise music choice helps develop foreshadowing from the beginning to the end of the movie. Following the breaking in, Luke, one of the Fisher’s leaders, shoots Jasper. In the background a very high pitched noise is heard. This can compensate for Theo’s ringing and add to the theme of life versus death.
