The Theme of Love in First Love, My Last Duchess and Remember
'First love', 'My Last Duchess' and 'Remember' all share the theme
'loss of love' which is presented in many different ways. These poems
are known to be some of the best love poems of their time, written
over a hundred years ago. 'Remember' and 'My Last Duchess,' deal with
death as a result of the relationship. The poems are all presented in
the first person, which portrays a more dramatic mood as we emphasise
with the subject. They are all told/written in a male's point of view,
this is interesting because society only expects women to express
their emotions towards love. 'Remember' which is written in a female's
point of view bring realism to the poem and to the mood of the poem
because we expect women to express their feelings about love.
'First love' was written about a person who the speaker falls in love
with as soon as eyes were laid on her. In contrast to 'My Last
Duchess' where the lord is showing material items off and is informing
a messenger that he murdered his last duchess out of jealousy and
spite. Yet in remember the female voice is just talking about when she
has passed away it is better to forget her and be happy, than to
remember her and be sad. 'My Last Duchess' and 'Remember' are about
single feelings throughout the poem as appose to 'First love' where
the voice has a mixed proportion or emotions, for example at the
beginning he loves the woman and he is happy, but by the end he feels
extremely heart broken.
In all three poems the relationship between the poets and their lovers
are very similar. In 'My Last Duchess' the relationship between the

yet dignified language, and there are a lot of deep heavy sounding
words.
"Hand," "planned" and "understand"
These words add to the sombre tone. 'Remember is a 14 line sonnet
which appeals to an older audience because the subject of death is
more intriguing. 'My Last Duchess' this poem is a dramatic monologue
which consists of rhyming couplets portraying a more sad yet
interesting poem. It is written in rhythmic couplets which help to
convey the idea of the duke's smugness.
Overall, the poems are all expressed in a very emotional and detailed
way. They all prove that loss of love is presented in a very direct
and appealing way; this has been shown in the way that the poets
composed their poems all in the first person, making them very
descriptive and using a lot of dramatic imagery.

Has there ever been a time where you have experienced true love, but everything was not what you expected? You thought everything was at the forefront but there was a deeper meaning to things. Well in the poem “First Love: A Quiz”, A.E. Stallings introduces you to the deeper side of things. This poem doesn’t consist of many literary devices, but Stallings uses her choice of words to make the reader give thought to the text, and to the story being told of Persephone and Hades. The structure of the poem also helps to better understand the actual meaning of the poem. As you read this “quiz” everything gets very abstract and your options become harder and harder to choose from.

The poems make for a simple addition to the narrative and allows for a much more meaningful experience for a reader and makes for a much more engrossing story, thus adding to the experience as a whole.
The elements in the poem work very well together to help set the theme of this poem. The tone set the overall mood of the poem, so show that it was rushed but not in a chaotic way. The imagery helps to show us little details of the setting, which are very helpful. And finally, the figures of speech, help the reader to compare the scene to things they have experienced in their lifetime to fully understand the poem.

...t job of drawing the reader in with the tone. The tone creates the mood, which is necessary to make the poem leave an impact. The point of view gives more perspective as to what is going on. Without the point of view, the pieces of literature would be objective and tedious. The imagery is the icing on the cake. Using descriptive words, facial expressions, and action verbs gives the audience something to visualize as they read. When the audience has something to visualize, the story has more impact. Although Homer and Atwood wrote two different poems, they can be matched in many different ways.
When reading or listening to poetry, the main objective for me is to feel moved. Happiness, longing, sadness are some of the feelings that can be achieved just by listening to others’ words. It is within these words that creates another world, or separates us from our own. Words all have a certain kind of attachment to them, so if used properly an author can stimulate a reader beyond belief.
The Theme of Love in the Poems First Love, To His Coy Mistress, Porphyria's Lover, My Last Duchess and Shall I Compare Thee?
Robert Browning’s “My Last Duchess” is a dramatic monologue about the Duke of Ferrara. In this poem, the duke shows off his painting of his late wife and recalls their past times together to a guest in his home. The duke’s comments about his late wife depict him as a jealous and controlling man.
Ernest Hemingway’s novel, A Farewell to Arms, positions Catherine’s situation as a means to draw parallels to the advancing front of the war. Hemingway escalates the relationship between the two protagonists of the novel, Catherine and Frederic Henry. Taking place during the time of World War I, the novel shadows Henry, an Italian soldier, and his journey to appease Catherine, a British nurse, who eventually transforms into the “spouse” he so desires. Desperate to preserve this relationship, as with any human being, without the gift of companionship, Tenente can easily wither away into his own thoughts, unaware of the tragedies in deterioration. Hemingway contrasts Catherine’s ill-fated situation with the ongoing war through the perplexing
In “My Last Duchess,” Robert Browning uses an excellent example of dramatic monologue. Browning uses a casual conversation throughout the poem which makes the reader feel as if he or she were overhearing it. As “My Last Duchess” unfolds, the reader discovers the central idea from analyzing the relationship between the lines and stanzas. The most explicit theme in the poem is one of power and jealousy which the Duke displays throughout. This theme is made apparent when the Duke stands in front of an agent for his fiancée’s family with a portrait of his last wife – who is now dead – and talks about her flaws. By the end, the reader realizes that the irony in this piece is that the Duke’s perceived “faults” of the Duchess were actually good characteristics to have such as compassion and courtesy to those whom served her. This being said, we can infer that the Duke is doing this to warn his future wife the consequences of not living up to his standards.
The poem in brief summary allows us to experience an outsider’s view of the death of Lucy Gray and her parents’ grief. The character narrating the poem tells the story of Lucy, a girl who was sent by her father with a lantern to light the way home, for her mother in town. On her way to town a snow storm hits and Lucy is never found neither dead nor alive. The fact that a stranger is narrating the story as opposed to one of the parents telling the story, allows the reader to witness the tragedy of Lucy Gray without feeling too tangled up in the parents’ grief. By having an outsider who is in no way involved in the tragedy tell the story, the writer of the poem William Wordsworth, gives the reader an objective point of view on the tragedy as well as room to relate the reader’s own experience to the poem without feeling uncomfortable. Had the poem lacked objectivity the reader would have surely felt uncomfortable and stifled by emotions of the parents’ or a parent telling the story of their daughter’s death. As well as that, the objectiveness of the stranger narrating gives the reader almost a communal experience. It is as if the reader was in a small town one day, and a local just happened to...
