Love without sacrifice causes people to become selfish and demolish their relationships. America Singer is a seventeen-year-old girl who has the opportunity to marry the prince of ‎Illéa and change her country forever; however, she refuses to sacrifice her prior relationships and lifestyle for the man she loves. The Elite, written by Kiera Cass, is a wonderful story that demonstrates the reality of facing complicated decisions and overcoming your greatest fears. After being chosen to join The Elite, the group of six girls that are competing to become Maxon’s wife, America discovers who she truly is and ultimately decides she loves the prince with all her heart. Woven into the fabric of the story is a compelling message about human nature: When individuals truly love another person, they are willing to sacrifice everything for them. “I ran from the room. Of course Celeste wasn’t doing me a favor. She was showing me my place. Why was I even bothering with this? The king was expecting me to fail, the public didn’t want me, and I was sure I couldn’t be a princess.” (128) Her attitude causes a chain reaction of anger and distrust from Maxon, Aspen, and the other Elite. With no one left to blame for her troubles, America finally realizes that her actions have disastrous consequences; eventually, she pleads for forgiveness. Kiera Cass’s clever writing skills create an intricate world that the reader immerses themselves into. The best metaphor in the book is when The Elite spend a few days with their family members for the first time in months. “The girls were animated, and everyone was sparkling with energy.” (64) This sentence beautifully explains how excited everyone is, but still exemplifies how refined and elegant The Elite had
