During Ernest Cline's Ready Player One, the literary element of conflict assists in developing the theme of perseverance. Conflict in stories sometimes creates many different themes, one being perseverance. Perseverance is a huge theme throughout the book of Ready Player One. In the story, main protagonist, Wane Watts, spends most of his time in the OASIS, a whole virtual world. When the creator of the OASIS dies he leaves behind an “easter egg” or a hidden prize. If you find this prize you take over the entire OASIS and inherit all of James Halliday’s (Creator of the Oasis) fortune. Wane tries to find this prize with a group of friends and make sure that the corrupt business of IOI doesn’t find it before them and ruin the entire OASIS. An example of when the theme of perseverance is developed from conflict is when main protagonist Wade Watts decides to enter a room in the OASIS getting him closer to his main goal of Halliday's Easter Egg. Ogden tells the group that, “Even though the Sixers have done everything to stack the odds against you, somehow you four have persevered" (Cline 315). The sixers are the people who work at IOI and want to corrupt the OASIS, the sixers have gone to extreme measures to try winning this contest to find the easter egg. They have even murdered people in real life including one of Wane’s best friends Daito. This conflict has lead to Wane and his friends persevering on and continuing to fight for the future of the oasis throughout the book. The conflict of this story leads to Wade never wanting to give up what's basically the future of the world for him to the corrupt business of IOI.
