Buying Loyalty Essay


In life, it is important to have someone's loyalty. In the story, Buying Loyalty, written by Chang Tu shows how one can see this in many different points of view. Throughout the story, Feng Hsuan sings about not having enough necessities, and after he sings, he earns them. At the end of the story Feng Hsuan burns the taxes of the people trying to gain the people’s loyalty. This eventually does show Lord that he has the people's loyalty. Thus, in Buying Loyalty, the main theme is that one can’t buy loyalty, one must earn it.
Initially, the character, Lord Meng-ch’ang, is rude, arrogant, and rich man. For example, when Feng Hsuan sends a servant to go to ask Lord Meng-ch’ang for a place to live; his servant is rudely blown off. This demonstrates how much people don’t trust the lord. Furthermore, when Feng Hsuan asks for more stuff he gets he basic needs and is blown off. Feng Hsuan then sings, hoping he will get the attention of the servants. He eventually gathers what he needs and in return is loyal to Lord Meng-ch’ang. This shows how people can earn the people's loyalty by simply giving them their basic needs. This is shown when Lord Meng-ch’ang states, “Now I understand how one has bought loyalty for me.” (3) He states this because Feng Hsuan rips up the taxes; he also lets the people in the kingdom be more free.This causes Lord Meng-ch’ang to send him away; later on, Lord Meng-ch’ang understands. Furthermore, Feng Hsuan says that he simply bought loyalty for Lord Meng-ch’ang. This could be perceived as weird because one can’t buy loyalty;this is being used to say that he earned it for him.
