Why Reading about the Horror Genre is not a Bad Idea After reading the story “The Tell-Tale Heart” I think that it is safe to say that reading and studying the horror genre is appropriate for students in middle school and high school. A strong argument for this statement is saying the horror is another modern style of writing and it is another emotion that we all feel. Overall, There are many different reasons why horror is appropriate for our age group. As just stated, horror is suitable for students because it is just another genre. Saying the genre of horror is different from others because it has scary stories and that will affect children is not a valid counterargument. Other genres like action and adventure could lead for children to do things that they shouldn’t. At least the horror genre can keep kids from doing things that the shouldn’t. Kids should be scared to do things that they shouldn’t. Fear is inevitable and if kids isolate themselves from fear, when it comes to them it will be tougher to get over it than it would be if familiarized with the horror genre. Reading these types of books can lead children to find out that everyone is scared of something and that there is always a way around it. Pretending that fear does not exist is a bad thing. Obviously, you have to get used to fear slowly. Having four-year-olds watch horror movies is not safe. But starting slow is good. Also, the adrenaline you get by reading horror stories is shown to make you feel alive and feel sting emotions. Some people who write books in the horror genre like to crank up the suspense and fear while reading these books.
