In his book, Horror and the Horror Film, author Bruce F. Kawin remarked “horror itself resists formulation and can be difficult and unpleasant to contemplate.” This year was a phenomenal year for both horror and contemplative movies. Two prime examples: Get Out and mother!. Despite being both horror films with subliminal messaging and allegories, they had drastically different reactions and box office performances. To understand why this happened, it is imperative to analyze marketing, storyline, climate, and audience interpretation. Measuring the success of a film can be an incredibly subjective endeavor. However, analyzing a film’s ROI, or return on investment, can provide insight on how profitable a movie is. Horror films are the most …show more content…
In regards to the Bible, the most common question one will ask is “what does this mean?” (Powell). With the Biblical undertones of mother! combined with its complicated allegories, this film left most viewers asking the same question. Due to its marketing campaign being shrouded in secrecy, a majority of viewers went into the theater not knowing much about the plot or meaning behind the film. This led to a multitude of angry reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, with people stating that they had to Google the meaning behind the film to make sense of it. One reviewer wrote that the film was “horrible”, saying that “if you need to Google search the meaning of the movie when you get home, it was a failure” (Parker). The intensely negative reactions to mother! left people wondering what went wrong, given that the film had an all-star cast and a director previously responsible for other successful films like Black Swan and Requiem for a Dream. What distinguishes Get Out from mother! is the ability of the audience to comprehend and digest the meanings behind the film. According to director Darren Aronofsky and lead actress Jennifer Lawrence, the film is an allegory for the role of humanity in the destruction of the environment by characterizing mother nature and God played by Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem, respectively (Ryzik). Despite critical acclaim, mother! has not been able to shake negative reception from general audiences who did not understand the message of the film. But the fault in this does not lie in the audience, the methods used in the marketing of this film are the likely culprits for its poor ratings and box office performance. By keeping the plot and message behind the movie mostly a secret, audiences were unable to fully comprehend the story and when people cannot understand something, they get angry. mother! relied too
Halloween is rife with psychological scares that affect its audience greatly. “Symbolism, dreamlike imagery, emotional rather than rational logic” are present in Psychoanalytic criticism. Siskel and Ebert talked about how the movie makes you feel as if you are the protagonist, scared for your life and feeling every bit of suspense (Siskel and Ebert). The movie is purely fueled by emotional responses to what is happening to the characters and focuses itself purely on how the audience will respond. In the clip shown, the main protagonist talks about how she killed the killer but he is shown alive. The movie is not concerned with the logic; otherwise, the killer would have at least been slowed down by the injuries he sustained. Siskel and Ebert laud the movie on its set up of scenes, score, character development, and use of lighting to make the audience feel the terror the characters undergo.
Some would say watching horror movies and being scared out of your wits is a fun way to spend their hard earned money. They go see these movies on average once a week, each time choosing a newer version of a trilogy like “Chucky” or “The evil Dead”. Film making has come a long way over the last few decades, the graphic...
To begin with, some people would say they enjoy a horror movie that gets them scared out of their wits. They go see these movies once a month on average, for fun, each time choosing a newer sequel like “Final Destination” or “The evil Dead”. King says “When we pay our four or five bucks and seat ourselves at tenth-row center in a theater showing a horror movie we are daring the nightmare” (405). As a writer of best-sel...
In Hollywood today, most films can be categorized according to the genre system. There are action films, horror flicks, Westerns, comedies and the likes. On a broader scope, films are often separated into two categories: Hollywood films, and independent or foreign ‘art house’ films. Yet, this outlook, albeit superficial, was how many viewed films. Celebrity-packed blockbusters filled with action and drama, with the use of seamless top-of-the-line digital editing and special effects were considered ‘Hollywood films’. Films where unconventional themes like existentialism or paranoia, often with excessive violence or sex or a combination of both, with obvious attempts to displace its audiences from the film were often attributed with the generic label of ‘foreign’ or ‘art house’ cinema.
The Bad and The Beautiful (1952) and State and Main (2000) are films within films that unmask Hollywood Cinema as a dream factory and expose the grotesque, veneer hidden by the luxury of stars. The Bad and the Beautiful, directed by Vincent Minnelli, is a black and white film narrated in flashback form. The films theatrical nature requires more close-ups than wide-screen shots to capture the character’s psychological turmoil. For example, Fred and Jonathan’s car ride is captured in a close-up to signify their friendship; however their relationship deteriorates after Jonathan’s deceit. While the camera zooms out, Fred stands alone motionless. Here, Fred is captured from a distance at eye-level and he becomes ostracized by the film industry and

As the high pitched piano tune starts to play and the sound of leaves rustle in the crisp October air, chills are sent rushing from the back of the head to the tail of the spine. The viewer watches with deep curiosity and horror as the escaped psychopath and murderer -Michael Myers- raises terror through the streets of Haddonfield, Illinois. He has terrified millions of viewers for over 35 years and has became one of the most well known villains in movie history. Halloween (1978) has grossed over 265 million dollars in today’s money (due to inflation) and has become the standard in which other horror movies are judged.
People flock to horror movies each year. Usually to be scared. Another is to solve the question of Who done it? Unfortunately, a lot of these horror movies fail to scare people or make the killer so obvious the audience gets bored. Occasionally, there are a few horror movies that stick out. Scream, directed by Wes Craven, is one of them. Wes Craven is always toying with the viewer's fears. Always finding ways to scare the audience at every turn. He also plays with the viewer's head, and has them second guessing themselves. How does he do it? Well, as one of the characters in the movie exclaims, "There's a formula to it. A very simple formula. Everybody's a suspect!" This paper will discuss how Craven uses sound, camera shots, and mise en scene
Modern day horror films are very different from the first horror films which date back to the late nineteenth century, but the goal of shocking the audience is still the same. Over the course of its existence, the horror industry has had to innovate new ways to keep its viewers on the edge of their seats. Horror films are frightening films created solely to ignite anxiety and panic within the viewers. Dread and alarm summon deep fears by captivating the audience with a shocking, terrifying, and unpredictable finale that leaves the viewer stunned. (Horror Films)
One of my favorite film franchises is the Nightmare On Elm Street series. Freddy Krueger is one of modern horror’s most recognized, beloved and feared icons, with his trademark weathered fedora, burned skin, striped red-and-green sweater, and bladed glove. The lovechild of the late, great Wes Craven, Nightmare On Elm Street saved New Line Cinema from financial despair & was instrumental to their recovery, affectionately nicknaming the studio “The House That Freddy Built.” When you glimpse into this staple of horror, it becomes easy to understand how the series scores on every Top List of successful horror franchises.
Monster is a movie based on a true story about an American female serial killer. Aileen Wuornos was a prostitute who killed multiple men for financial gain to support her and her lover Shelby Wall (her real life name being Tyria Moore). The real life serial killer was convicted of the murders and was executed by lethal injection after ten years on Florida’s death row in 2002.
Would you rather be horrified beyond repair or thrilled to the point of no return? In horror, the main purpose is to invoke fear and dread into the audience in the most unrealistic way. Horror movies involve supernatural entities such as ghosts, vampires, teleportation, and being completely immortal. As thriller films are grounded in realism and involve more suspense, mystery, and a sense of panic. Though both genres will frighten the audience, it will happen in two different ways. Whether the horror thrills or the thriller horrifies, a scare is always incorporated.
As a filmgoer sits down to watch a movie, they want to be wowed . Movies are supposed to engage the moviegoer; as well as captivate the eye leading the viewer to , in a sense, get lost in the movie. There are key criteria components that make a movie successful. Two movies that carry out those components well are movie titles from Scorsese “The Departed” , as well as Christopher Nolan “Memento”. Both movies provide a respectable amount of creativity, while bearing a large amount of content for the viewer to “get lost” in. A substandard movie leaves the viewer with a bad taste in their mouth; on the other hand, a well made film satiates the hunger for a good film. The viewer should feel a connection to the movie whether emotional, or sympathetic
Add together the theme, purpose, and plot of this movie, and the total would create an effective movie with the capability of attracting a large audience.
Almost everyone has a favorite genre of film, but how everyone defines their favorite genre can differ greatly. Horror is one of the genres where its definition can be perceived differently by many people. Like all other genres, horror does have rules and traditions that must be included in order for a film to be considered a horror film. These rules and traditions include a protagonist, an antagonist, an escape or escape attempt of some sort, and very influential audio and visual effects.
