As a filmgoer sits down to watch a movie, they want to be wowed . Movies are supposed to engage the moviegoer; as well as captivate the eye leading the viewer to , in a sense, get lost in the movie. There are key criteria components that make a movie successful. Two movies that carry out those components well are movie titles from Scorsese “The Departed” , as well as Christopher Nolan “Memento”. Both movies provide a respectable amount of creativity, while bearing a large amount of content for the viewer to “get lost” in. A substandard movie leaves the viewer with a bad taste in their mouth; on the other hand, a well made film satiates the hunger for a good film. The Departed offers three key characters, the dirty cop, the mob boss, and the undercover cop. The movie portrays the issues with being an undercover cop and how much risk is on the line for one’s life. As, the movie progresses the undercover cop has to make crucial decisions that shape his life. The undercover cop works to investigate the crime boss; on the other hand, the dirty cop works to gain a paycheck from the mobster. Throughout the movie each of the characters face adversity to gain new perspective. As the undercover cop delves deeper and deeper into the friendship of the crime boss, Frank Costello, he learns that he bargains for more than he wants. The same goes for the dirty cop, as he tries to gain more and more money he comes out shorthanded. He bites off more than he can chew and pays for it in the end. Frank Costello (The Crime Boss) works to find the mole in his group of “thugs”. In Memento, the main character starts piecing together the puzzle of his life bit by bit. As he moves forward, he learns that he is unraveling something bigger than he expects. He is trying to evade his identity, making himself susceptible to dodging the truth. Ken Kesey's award-winning novel, "One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest", was adapted into a film in 1975 written and directed by New York City native Bo Goldman and Czech director Milos Forman. Towards the end of the novel and film, Chief Bromden escapes from the ward. This scene is conveyed differently in the novel and film; however, there are evident similarities between each form of media. This scene is important to the plot because it wraps up the entire storyline. In the film and novel, similarities within Chief Bromden’s escape from the ward include the way Chief escaped, how he couldn't hear anyone in the ward due to being deaf, and how McMurphy assisted Bromden with gaining his confidence to lift the panel and throw it through the window. McMurphy essentially changed Bromden to help him break out of the asylum and back into the real world.

Emporia State Universities Production of this masterpiece was a masterpiece in itself, from the stunningly genuine portrayal of the characters of Avery and Rose, to the realism found within the set, every aspect of the production was superb.

Film and literature are two media forms that are so closely related, that we often forget there is a distinction between them. We often just view the movie as an extension of the book because most movies are based on novels or short stories. Because we are accustomed to this sequence of production, first the novel, then the motion picture, we often find ourselves making value judgments about a movie, based upon our feelings on the novel. It is this overlapping of the creative processes that prevents us from seeing movies as distinct and separate art forms from the novels they are based on.
Director Christopher Nolan′s film Memento (2000), is loosely based from the concept of a short story named Memento Mori written by his brother Jonathan. This story is about a man named Leonard Shelby who is suffering from anterograde amnesia, which is a loss of ability to create new memories after the event that caused the amnesia, leading to a partial or complete inability to recall the recent past, while long term memories from before the event remain intact. Leonard was hit over the head during an attack which resulted in his wife being raped and murdered. With the help of contact named Teddy and a bartender named Natalie, Leonard set out for revenge. Since the attack Leonard has set out to exact revenge on the man who has caused him suffering. He helps himself by writing notes, taking photographs, and tattooing himself with important notes and facts. An analysis of the film Memento reveals the use of film techniques such as editing, non-linear storytelling, symbolism, director's style, musical score, color, and cinematography that creates an intellectual stimulant that has the viewer deciphering a puzzle in a reversed chronological order.

The vision Christopher Nolan had for The Prestige (2006) was to add to the outbreak of street magician film, whilst playing a large dramatic subplot equal in grandeur to the magical performances within the film. In the final sequence of the film, I will analyse how the cinematography and sound helps to resolve the plot so that it summarises the themes present in the film, whilst also invoking a response from the audience. Nolan uses close up shots, non-diegetic sound (music) and dialogue collaboratively to convey the dramatic, personal subplot of the characters and their relationships, whilst appealing to the audience bringing forth an emotional response from the audience. I believe that family plays a big role in shaping the mind and characters involved in these famous films because we as children are shaped by what we see our parents do, they shape and mold our behavior. Based on a true story, the movie ‘Lone Survivor’ features four Navy SEALs that set out on a mission to Afghanistan with orders to capture and kill Taliban leader Ahmad Shah. The Navy SEALS are detected by villagers and the mission was compromised. Ultimately, the mission had been discovered and the men found themselves surrounded by dozens of Taliban soldiers. One of the Navy SEAL soldiers managed to dispatch to base and retrieve assistance but the Taliban shoot down the helicopter. During battle, three of the Navy SEAL soldiers were killed leaving one still alive.
Memento is a very different kind of movie than what’s normally expected, a movie that makes you question the reality of ones memory. The movie is set in two ways: one in black and white and the other one in color, where black and white is shown chronologically and color is demonstrated in reverse order. The main character, Leonard suffers from anterograde amnesia but he is still determined to find the man who raped and killed his wife one night, as believed by Leonard. He tries to organize the world around him using notes, tattoos and Polaroid pictures. The audience tries to figure out the story through the “facts” that is given via the protagonist. We know just as much the main character is aware of. It is a movie that screws with your mind every time we come closer to the “truth” but the question is: is it really the truth or a made up memory by the character to make himself happy?

“Entertainment has to come hand in hand with a little bit of medicine, some people go to the movies to be reminded that everything’s okay. I don’t make those kinds of movies. That, to me, is a lie. Everything’s not okay.” - David Fincher. David Fincher is the director that I am choosing to homage for a number of reasons. I personally find his movies to be some of the deepest, most well made, and beautiful films in recent memory. However it is Fincher’s take on story telling and filmmaking in general that causes me to admire his films so much. This quote exemplifies that, and is something that I whole-heartedly agree with. I am and have always been extremely opinionated and open about my views on the world and I believe that artists have a responsibility to do what they can with their art to help improve the culture that they are helping to create. In this paper I will try to outline exactly how Fincher creates the masterpieces that he does and what I can take from that and apply to my films.
