The Stomach Flu
The rain was pouring outside. It was another long day, and Paul was getting nauseous. He had to stay late at the nurse's office again. “There’s nothing I can do,” the impolite nurse proclaimed. Paul was about to ask her to call his mother when she slammed the door shut. Paul’s phone was dead and no one was left. He then looked outside to see the golden ticket home that was the bus. It’s better than walking home, Paul thought to himself.
The school looked so different empty. He dragged himself and his backpack to the back of the bus. It was dead silent with everyone’s eyes on him. There was barely anyone there, and he didn’t know anyone. No more than a minute later of sitting there, he heard someone. “Hey, new kid,” the voice said as he looked up. Before Paul managed to tell her that he wasn’t new, The large bus driver shouted at her to sit down as the bus jerked forward.
“I’m not new,” Paul tried to say. “New or not,” she said, “I’m Eve”. She continued to introduce Paul to the other 3 kids on the bus. They were all boys and one of them, named James was asleep. Dave, another kid wore a puffy jacket and didn’t say much. The other

Paul decided to keep quiet for now. He walked with his head down muttering to himself. He felt the eyes getting heavier. The muttering behind him. He knew something was going on he didn’t know about. For a while it was silent except for a few noises and Mikey. Mikey was freaking out on a ramble. Paul couldn’t understand him but he definitely heard him mutter his name. It seemed as if this was Paul’s fault. Like they were disappointed in him. They were walking for thirty minutes when he Heard a quiet tear from Eve. “What is going on!?” Paul shouted. The figure was spotted behind them by Mikey who screamed as it ran by. They all stood still when Mikey’s started shivering. He started crouching away or at least tried to. He fainted to ground when it started charging towards
...s feeling of achievement at completing school is shown. There are close ups of the Tuohy’s with Ms Sue and Sam showing feelings of attachment with Michael. Moreover, the mid-shots of the teacher’s face highlights that he is accepted in the school community too. As such, Michael, like Billy has achieved a new sense of belonging due to connections with new people and places.
The influenza or flu pandemic of 1918 to 1919, the deadliest in modern history, infected an estimated 500 million people worldwide–about one-third of the planet’s population at the time–and estimates place the number of victims anywhere from 25 to 100 million. More than 25 percent of the U.S. population became sick, and some 675,000 Americans died during the pandemic. The 1918 flu was first observed in Europe, the U.S. and parts of Asia before swiftly spreading around the world. Surprisingly, many flu victims were young, otherwise healthy adults. At the time, there were no effective drugs or vaccines to treat this killer flu strain or prevent its spread. In the U.S., citizens were ordered to wear masks, and schools, theaters and other public
Arriving at Lacey’s house I walk to the backdoor letting myself into the house. Lacey was putting on tanning lotion in the kitchen, “Lacey,” I called to her, “my mom wants me to pick up snacks for the beach, do you want to go into town with me?”, “Sure,” she replied, “do you mind if my cousin comes with us?”, “Of course I don’t mind,“ I answered, “but we have to get moving, my dad only left me the car to use ‘til noon.”
The Cruise lines from all over the world have been hit hard with outbreaks of the “Stomach Flu.” This concerning illness is known as gastroenteritis and it can be caused by a handful of different bacteria and viruses. However, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the “norovirus is the most common cause of acute gastroenteritis in the United States.”(cite cdc overview). Cruise lines have taken large measures to prevent and contain the spread of the norovirus but the latest cruise ship, Royal Caribbean, has been greatly impacted by the norovirus with over 600 passengers infected.
Paul is invariably discovering new information and elements about his friends, and is working to better strengthen his new found friendships. Although not at first, Paul’s friends will soon see and learn his value and appreciate his skills. At first Paul feels out-of-place and is treated like a four-eyed freak. For example, Gino Deluca,
There I stayed for the remaining 20 minutes which managed to feel like hours. Finally, we pulled into the front of the school. Any relief in exiting The Bus left me quickly as I gazed upon Royalton High School once again. I had visited the institution over the last three years for my brothers’ wrestling matches, so it was vaguely familiar. After attending Open House the week prior, I became hesitant to approach since last time I had been assaulted by a large group of chatty girls. Only two people names were known to me in this large abyss of hormones, but I’d never meet either of
I have struggled my entire life with Crohn’s Disease. I was diagnosed with Crohn’s as a very young child and have spent a lot of time in and out of the hospital as my doctors have tried to control my disease. I have had major surgeries from Crohn’s but thankfully my condition has stabilized.
The year is 1861. My parents have both died from influenza and I now have the choice to go and live at a workhouse or beg on the streets and maybe even pick pocket. Well whatever I do it won't be fun but it's all I have left.
Growing up, I did not believe in unforeseen circumstances. However, when I turned seventeen, my whole perspective changed when I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. At first, I was truly in despair. I could not fathom how I went from being “healthy”, to having to live on medication for the rest of my life. Luckily, during my stay in the hospital, I was surrounded by a supportive medical team that allowed me to embark on this journey in a positive manner. My experience with this disease has taught me to be a fighter. For the past six years, I have been fighting for what I want: to become a PA. My dream and aspiration is to treat and cure patients the way I have been treated as a patient, with compassion: love, and care.
I looked around, the room had exposed pipes on the ceiling and the entire room smelled faintly of Clorox wipes. Around me girls and boys talked and caught up. The majority of them had apparently gone to Kindergarten together. While I was the new kid, the outsider. Seats were scarce. I looked for a familiar face, for some reason. I settled next to a girl with fiery red-orange hair. “Hi, I’m Halley.” She introduced herself. Her smile was the fake kind, seen in school pictures everywhere. I smiled and responded, “Hi, I’m Lorna. I just moved here from Texas.” Her smile became increasingly forced, “Um, cool.” She turned her body away from me. Ok, I though, sorry I offended you, I guess. In my head, I was sneering and thinking rude thoughts to no end. In class, however, I upheld my morals. I was silent for the rest of the
Kian also loved school. Every morning his father would drop him off, and every afternoon, his mother would pick him up. One autumn day, after his father hugged him goodbye, Kian’s teacher introduced a new friend to the class.
In the text, it states “I’m downstairs in the rec room playing zombie attack. No sound. I don’t want mom to know, although I’m pretty sure she guesses.” (p.1) I am sure every kid has had the experience of playing a banned game or engaging in an activity that they know they will get in trouble for. This is even further complicated for Cameron because his mother wants the volume low so people outside can not hear the game. The author paired a shared childhood experience with a scary situation very well. My next connection is a text to text connection about Cameron’s new home. Cameron says “something’s missing. A dishwasher. Seriously. Where’s the dishwasher?”. (p.13) This reminds me of the movie Inside Out when the main character’s family moves to a new home and the main character does not like it. The main character Riley did not like her house because it was empty. Both characters found reasons to be upset with their house that can be easily fixed. My next text to text connection was when the author described the cafeteria such as the announcements from the guidance counsellors, the smell of cafeteria food, and people yelling and talking. In the text it said “ I get on the bus and I take my place near the back, Cody’s gang barking me down the aisle”. (p. 40) This was similar to the description of the character’s experience in Fourth Grade Rats by Jerry Spinelli. This is also similar to my own personal experience of getting onto a school bus full of over-excited classmates. This is probably a somewhat universal student
Gastroenteritis, sometimes referred to as infectious diarrhoea is a common disease that affects millions of people annually. It is a disease caused by viruses, bacteria or parasites that enter the human body and spread, which induce symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and nausea. Although it is a common occurrence in society and is usually not harmful, cases of gastroenteritis in less developed countries may have more fatal repercussions due to their inability to access ample means of treatment. Over time, as more research was conducted into the disease, scientific developments were made to aid those affected by gastroenteritis and reduce the number of fatalities by educating people regarding preventative methods.
As I stepped off the bus, realization hit me in the face; a whole day off and I was at school instead of sleeping in and relaxing. “Lets just get this over with”, I thought with a yawn. Waiting for a hour in front of the gym for the doors to open at Invergarry Adult Education Center was definitely not described on the trip permission form. While waiting for the doors to open, the student monitors helped kill the boredom with little games such as, Simon Says, Cops and Robbers, and Red Rover. Finally at nine, the gym doors opened with a bang. “Here goes nothing”,was the first thought that entered my mind. Cautiously, the student monitors led the way through the doors. Hesitantly, we followed their footsteps. As the students and I entered through the gym doors, the teachers cheered and applauded for us. This act of kindness put a enormous smile on my face, as I hurried along the row of chairs to find a seat with my friends.
The school bell rang right at 3:35 PM dismissing all students home. As most students headed home, Anthony would stay after school working on homework, not wanting to leave school. This was due to “Home” being a place that was completely uncertain for Anthony. This became especially true towards the end of his senior year at Los Angeles Senior High School. His father suffered from alcoholism. This problem led to Anthony’s father being laid off and after selling everything they owned, Anthony’s family was kicked out of their small studio apartment in the MacArthur Park area of Los Angeles. At this point in life he and his family had found shelter inside the three doors of his mother’s mini van. As the last month of high school approached, Anthony found comfort and distraction from all his family’s problem’s in life through doing what he loved most, math and science related problems. This is just one life experience out of the many I went through growing up. I am Anthony.
